Starfox: Sick Bay by RickGriffin

Starfox: Sick Bay

RickGriffin

Thank you to Tim Weeks for the suggestion; I started on a Starfox fan picture and it eventually turned into . . . a little bit more. To be honest I always kinda liked the theory that, at least in the old Starfox continuity, the pilots had metal legs. Don't worry, if they needed to go back to civilian life I'm sure they could clone new ones.

Awesome work! The inclusion of Miyu and Fay is a really nice touch.

  • Link

Ooooh, the Zero-G blood flow thinguie... .w.;; I always shuddered thinking about that.

  • Link

only problem with the old theory as that blood does not pool in the legs x3
but i really do like your rendition of it

    • Link

Yea. I can't recall what video it was, but some youtube video guy pointed out that in one of the games they're running like 40 mph, which is a more PAWS-able reason for the earlier roboleg models of starfox.

      • Link

well yeah, , the multiplayer in the n64 version. xB
but if you really want to use that as an example, they also explode the same way the tanks and Arwings do.
in reality an artist probably just though it would look cool.

        • Link

i went and looked it up and feel dumb, i have no idea why i thought it was in the chest
          my mistake u_u

I've never seen a reasonable argument on why blood would not pool in the legs. Yes, I did watch the Game Theory video, and "blood pressure is the only thing that matters" is an extremely sweeping argument that needs a substantial amount more proof.

      • Link

well real world pilots, no matter what speed, the blood pools in the chest, which is why they have specially designed flight suits to combat that.
honestly i think the reason they have robot legs is because an artist decided it would look cool XB

        • Link

G-suits prevent pooling in the legs. It's where they have the fluid bladders.

          • Link

ahh, i went and looked it up and feel dumb, i have no idea whay i thought it was in the chest, thanks for pointing out. ._.

I have a sci-fi world I work on with my friend where some pilots have metal legs and our opinion on the issue is "who cares about blood pressure, this is awesome." If we wanted to be constrained by reality, we wouldn't use a bunch of furries in space.

      • Link

Couldn't they just wear those flight suits with the bladders in the legs that squeeze in high g to keep the blood from pooling? I had almost forgotten about this fan theory.

        • Link

Well yes. There is evidence that the lack of legs increases G resistance, but no evidence that it does so any better than an advanced flight suit would. So it's still just in the realm of what-if and wouldn't-it-be-cool

        • Link

well, you cant compare a normal fighter vs a starfighter.
the g's could be exponentially higher in sharp ultra high speed turns (but then.. the pilots would faint too)

" To be honest I always kinda liked the theory that, at least in the old Starfox continuity, the pilots had metal legs" Too bad that never was ever true, never has been officially stated or alluded to, and has been disproven by the Nintendo Power comic, but hey keep believing in baseless rumors that are only popularly known because some Youtube channel said so.

    • Link

None of it was ever true. It is a video game.

    • Link

You're being That Guy. Don't be That Guy.

    • Link

Dude. I don't like the metal legs thing myself, but it's not worth coming to Rick's page and getting snarky. If you don't like it, there are plenty of other artists who draw 'em with legs. Seriously.

    • Link

What was the point of this comment?

      • Link

Well, not sure if its THIS guy. But there is one furry guy who is SO OBSESSED with starfox.. That he has to have lengthy rants about how the metal legs dont work on EVERY starfox image.
It gets old after the 5th time.

        • Link

It might be. He came to an image of mine featuring Krystal complaining about "muh realizm".

          • Link

Hey, dude, I was trying to help you understand why your anatomy was way off. Nice to see this is how you respond to critique and people trying to help you, harboring some sort of grudge and then bringing it up whenever.

            • Link

Nope. You were asserting your preferences which idgaf about. I've been told by more than a few people you don't take kindly to people drawing sexualized material, especially Starfox. Don't even try it. lol

              • Link

What the hell are you talking about? There was no preference involved, that head was clearly too small in proportion to the rest of the body. That's it, simple as that. You're the one making it into some sort of giant conspiracy and are making dubious claims that "more than a few people" somehow care this much about me to spread rumors about what I do and don't do.

      • Link

He does this everywhere and is known for it. Don't ever draw a girl big boobs or you'll feel his wrath something awful.

        • Link

Dude, are you really holding this much of a grudge? I've only ever left you one comment on your artwork, here https://www.weasyl.com/submission/853248/break-time#cid2402727 and that was all the way back in January.

            .............................
I scrolled down to see you making a clown of yourself and thought "oh this guy". :I
And as I said, you're -known- for this.

All these flavors and he chooses to be salty lol

Disproven by the Nintendo Power Comic

      Uhm...

      It was kinda a thing.

If you don't like it, fine, but don't be both salty AND stupid about it.

      • Link

Picture A is non-canon and is based off the puppets that used metal stands. If we're going to take a Nintendo Power cover as fact then Mario looks like this
        http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--R5LL_VVC--/c_fit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636/oemuphd1z4u9bugffmma.jpg

Picture B shows the metal stands that the puppets used again, the same puppets the NP cover art was based on. They're stands, not legs or boots.

Picture C is from Melee, which is non canon, and they aren't robotic legs and are clearly boots

As for proving this bullshit wrong: http://i.imgur.com/p9l4vv3.png

Slippy is clearly shown to have his natural legs in the Nintendo Power comic, which is official canon tied into the SNES game. He had the same metal boots as the rest of the team before this panel and it isn't an artistic oversight. They never amputated their legs, they never had robot legs, they were always boots.

And I'm the one who is salty and stupid? Just one comment triggered the reaction of a good dozen of you all to reply. Of course you furries love causing drama so I guess I should have expected it.

        • Link

I CHOSE WHAT'S CANON AND WHAT'S NOT. You a literally the old man yelling at clouds and you both amuse and make everyone cringe.

        • Link

Basically, you're just choosing what you want to be cannon and what isn't.

          Deal with it, bud.

    • Link

totally inappropriate comment on someones work
this isnt /v/ so stop w ur "uhm.. actually..." crap

  • Link

I always enjoy how much life you put into these drawings, it's wonderful!

  • Link

Seriously love the way you drew these guys so much, my favorite take on the starfox gang for sure<3

  • Link

This is super great, and it makes me happy.

  • Link

People. People. Must we really be nerdish dicks about this. It's fan art of fictional characters based on original character designs. It's FAN ART. Realaaax.

  • Link

It's pretty nice to see Star Fox characters in your style, Rick.

  • Link

I really like this piece, and I've always loved the leg idea honestly. I don't care if it's canon or not, haha.

Also yes, the characters look great in your style. :D

  • Link

Ooh this looks really amazing. But where are their real legs? Looking at Karishad

  • Link

Random (likely offensive) thought on people who have lost both legs I would totally have absurdly long legs and normal legs just to freak people the fuck out. How does, you height vary by like ten inches? Lost both legs, got two new sets.

    • Link

This is actually a thing! Folks who have lost limbs specifically going for interesting or stylish prosthesis over "standard" ones. There is even some body mod community discussion on intentionally replacing limbs because the prosthesis works better. I think there was a TED talk on this at some point.

  • Link

i love how u put the earlier characters too this is a very nice piece

  • Link

so I take it this is from the original poster where they all have amputated legs?
