The secret testing version of Weasyl

Posted by charmander

March 19th update: Thank you for testing, everyone! The main website has now been upgraded.

We’ve been working on some wide-reaching changes to Weasyl and could use your help with one last round of testing! If you have a moment to log in, please try using https://testing.weasyl.com/ over the next week in place of the normal https://www.weasyl.com/. As is traditional, the changes are supposed to be invisible, so with any luck you’ll find that it’s exactly the same as the website you’re used to. If you find otherwise, we’d appreciate any bug reports or improvement suggestions sent to support@weasyl.dev. :)

Also, for those curious about the specific technical details of the change: we’re moving from Python 2 to Python 3! And for the even more curious, Weasyl is open-source, so feel free to see the code behind all this at https://github.com/Weasyl/weasyl.

I anticipate RSS feed subscriptions for artists and site-updates at some point, when manpower has the energy & time for it of course. No other art-site I've been to supports RSS subscriptions, which is a shame, since I like to unify updates to my favorite things in one spot. :D

    • Link

I really hope they add RSS

  • Link

I might spend a little time withe it. One thing I have noticed is how surprisingly responsive it is, even on my really shity mobile plan.

  • Link

    I will definitely be testing!
I dunno where to leave suggestions (not bugs), but have you considered making submission management more convenient? Like mass deleting? Or having a set of frequently used tags up as suggestions? :)

    • Link

Those would be really cool things to add! I second this motion!!

  • Link

    Seems to work for me.

  • Link

    I'll try it.

  • Link

I just tried the testing part, and it works fine. I might try the "Submit" function soon.

  • Link

I can't really login cos the 2 factor auth thingy doesn't work, but i'm looking forward to the update! ^-^

    • Link

I have it on too and was able to log in. Hmm. We’ll look into it!

      • Link

yay! ^-^ btw i just want you guys to know that weasyl is one of my favourite sites, thank you ^w^

  • Link

I tested it for a bit and have found no issues so far. One thing of note though is I do think the site is running faster on the testing version so that's interesting.

  • Link

    So far so good! 🐻👍

  • Link

I did not even know that was happening.

  • Link

    Only somewhat related...
Is it possible to install the open source version on a hosted shared server? I have a friend that wanted to try it, but it was giving him fits.

    • Link

Probably, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Is it just to experiment with, or are you hoping to set up a production website of some kind?

      • Link

Just a small community group type thing, so nothing that will stretch it at all. We just really like the feel of this place and it supports a lot of formats.

  • Link

SFW filtering isn't working correctly. I had to add tags.

  • Link

Still looks the same to me... Is the community still active in general here or something?

  • Link

Great news and great work! I was wondering when this day would come. My sincerest apologies for the lack of foresight that went into choosing Python 2, as I'm sure update this was no simple task.

    • Link

      Appreciate it ❤️

And hey, Python changed a lot in nine years. Thanks for making Weasyl!

  • Link

"Also, weasyl is now open source." Holy moly, this is why I love Weasyl more compared to FA and DA by a loooooooong shot.

  • Link

Thank god python libraries changes don't have any negative affects on websites. Kodi on the other hand made life painful. XD

    • Link

Painful as in managing plug ins and skins. (stuff randomly break due to auto update, I still think the kodi dev did it sloppily. also maybe could we add a edit option? like how FA does it? I mess up a lot and fixing grammar and adding details is a god send when I forgot something (right after submitting comments.) and want to go back to fix some things. good work also on the site.

I like the work they are doing c:

I use PaleMoon (Firefox fork) as my primary web browser. Every time I try to delete messages, log in, or log out, I get the message, "This action appears to have been performed illegitimately; for your security, this request was not fully processed." The site works fine for me when using Firefox.

Are you relying on some special "anti-bot" Javascript? Most of those tactics are not standards compliant and will cause problems on alternative browsers.

    • Link

No special anti-bot JavaScript, but we did start relying on a (standard – Origin) header supported by modern browsers as part of an ongoing set of changes to improve Weasyl’s speed and security.

      • Link

You mean the "cross-origin" header? Come on... that stuff doesn't work. Use tokens. If you can't trust tokens over HTTPS, you can't trust anything.

The Internet is supposed to be about accessibility of information and graceful degradation is important. As an ex-web developer, I'm highly suspect of any technologies marketed as being essential for security, because all they really seem to do is break everything other than what has the largest market share, and that's just not right.

      • Link

Well, one of those sure missed the mark. Site seems to really struggle using Firefox now when making those requests specifically (log-in, log-out, deleting notifications). Browsing the site otherwise is fine. Much like Waccoon I'm usually using Pale Moon too so I get the same message every time. Gave me a bit of a scare.
