Development resumes

Posted by charmander

Hi and welcome to the first unofficial official announcement.

  • Embedded content from Sketchfab, SoundCloud, Vimeo, and YouTube is tentatively working again. (Google Docs continues to work.) Sorry that it was broken for so long. We ended up working around the broken part instead of fixing it.

  • Because we don’t have the staff or the tools to deal with spam right now but having signups closed is also no good, Weasyl is back in invite-only mode. You’ll need to have a friend with an account vouch for you after you sign up.
(clarification: before this, it was not possible for anyone to sign up at all)

  • Support is on a different e-mail address temporarily. If you sent a message that hasn’t been answered, please feel free to send it again. Sorry about that too.

  • Character uploads were temporarily broken. They’re now working again.
(clarification: broken for around one day, yesterday)

  • The site is still slow, but less slow than before and maybe faster soon. Details forthcoming.
(update 2020-02-10: it should be not that slow now, although we’re still going to try to keep making it faster.)

Thanks for the update! I'm happy to see things aren't totally stagnant. :3

For what it's worth, I'm glad this site isn't dead and there are still people keeping it up!

The issues with slowdowns and frequent 502/504 errors kinda kept me away for a bit but I understand this site runs with limited staff and resources. I'm just happy this hasn't been abandoned completely!

Here's hoping 2020 is a good year for Weasyl.

Thank you for the update! I'm glad to see the site is still alive and kicking!

Are you still looking for moderating staff for the spam?

  • Link

Are you going to be getting back to the people who have offered to help out as staff?

Thank you for keeping us updated!

Thank you very much for updating this site. I usually visit here less often because how slow it goes.

Thank you so much for the update--I'm glad you still love the site and the users who have remained through everything. :)

I would never go back to certain other sites for anything, I love this one very much and wish more people loved it enough to stay and not just come "here while FA is down" or something...……..

    That's excellent news!

    Welcome back, guys.

Thank you so much for the update on the situation. I am very happy to see that Youtube and Soundcloud submissions are fixed again.
For invite only, how does that work? How is it done to vouch for someone joining?

    Thanks for the update. :-)

    Suspected since the beginning... thanks

Thanks for fixing the site somewhat. I had to reduce the resolution of my uploaded pictures to <1 MB because of posting errors, but apart from that it's still working for me.

Best of luck on finding a solution for the spamming, and in the meantime... thanks for the work you HAVE done so far!

Update! Updates are always welcome! Thanks for clarifications here. Sad to read about the issues you guys have had! Alas I'm no expert so couldn't help. I'll just sit here cheering on the sidelines! Go Weasyl, Go Weasyl!
I hope you'll rekindle your flame on the bits where it was going out, and know we appreciate all the amazing work you all have done so far!

Glad to hear it and thanks for the update!! Keep up the awesome work! I've been happy with the site but better and improved is, well, better! Thanks guys!

The "Download" feature needs to be able to be disabled by artists. I just uploaded some new characters that I have for sale and I forgot about the download button. I do not want my files being stolen by people claiming the character is theirs. Please make this button have an option to be disabled.

    • Link

We’ll consider adding that option or removing the button entirely.

To be clear, removing the download button doesn’t stop people from downloading anything, and having it there doesn’t give them any rights to claim your image.

Still good to see that development is alive and kicking. Though I am grateful that the invite-only may deter spambots, I am still not using Weasyl until the spam and the errors are fully tackled. In the meantime, I have been using SoFurry and InkBunny and have been watching development on ArtRise which I intend to test out(shout out to the guys working on AR).

I still wish you and the rest of Weasyl's team good luck. You may see me return in the first half of 2020 if everything is in your favor.

thanks for updating :D i'm really glad this site's not abandoned or anything because i really like it here ^w^ keep it up! :3

Thank you. I had my doubts and fears that things would inevitably fall apart and this whole site would go down. It seems things are generally faster/back to normal with no random errors whatsoever.

Thank you all for your hard work!

Thank you for working so hard to keep this place active! It isn't going unnoticed <3

Thank you guys for providing a good space to upload my weirdness :) It's greatly appreciated!

What is the status of the staff? Have new volunteers been chosen? That's the biggest thing for me right now in terms of site usage. I feel that there has historically been very little interaction between staff and the User base. That doesn't help boost site activity. Some helpful things had been posted in our forums in regards to boosting activity as well.

I'm happy to finally see some updates from the staff, and I'd like to see more of that going forward. Maintaining that communication with users is critical. If there's no staff interaction, the site looks dead. Who wants to put their efforts into a dead site? Something I had suggested some time ago, maybe even when I was still on staff, was to have a smaller staff group dedicated to site interactions and events to keep breathing lIfe into the site, and to boost activity and attract new users.

Tldr staffing update for the users for transparency would be appreciated.

Thank you for keeping us informed. I sincerely appreciate it, as I very much love this site so much, and it used to be my main site before some life issues and the site issues came up. I'd like for it to return to being my hotspot.

I don’t know, but Ikani’s back now and will probably be able to answer.

Any chance you guys can bring back that old system for uploading stories? It was a rich text editor right in the website. Now its just text file uploads and google embeds. I used that editor when I uploaded the first three things here.

    • Link

It’ll take a while, but that’s the plan!

      • Link

That would be good, because apparently Google has rules against sexual content being published and if people use that to publish stories here, someone could start mass reporting that and get a lot of people to lose their google accounts.

Thanks for all your efforts! I don't know much about it but I can guess taking care of a website like this one is a daunting task.
