Thoughts on...Black Weekend (Work, culture, rant) by r-a-blackpaws

Well, another Black Thursday and Friday are upon us soon...y'know, what used to be Thanksgiving Thursday and Food Coma Friday.

So, I kinda feel a bit compelled to share my thoughts about all of this stuff. Ready?

IT'S A LOAD OF CRAP!

The items that are doorbusters are often worse than what you can get normally (and actually for less than the doorbusters in some cases). Seriously! THEY ARE DESIGNED TO BE CRAP! They lack features that the normal items have (a smart tv that ISN'T smart, for example). And they're made specifically for Black Friday too, cause people only see "Ooooh...I can get a Samsung 55-inch LED tv for only $200???? MINE!" Instead, if you actually look at the features for the product, you can get a slightly smaller tv with more features FOR THE SAME DOORBUSTER PRICE! >.<

And the staff are often very overworked. I myself will be logging eight hours-plus on Black Friday (probably most of that filling guest orders like last year). And we don't get any pay bonus either; those go to the people booked to work Thanksgiving and end at 8am on Black Friday.

And the shoppers are incredibly rude as well. I've been cursed at, shoved, pushed, mauled, screamed at (by both customers and bosses), and hit by children all while working.

All of that, and all the other horror stories you hear about on Black Friday make me glad for two things:
1. That I do not shop on Black Friday and...
2. That this is the LAST year I have to work retail during the holidays (remember...notice is coming in this coming August, assuming I'm not fired after the holidays).

So yeah...my thoughts on this Black Weekend. What are yours?

As I understand it, black Friday has come to Canada (likely a while ago) but when I was young, it wasn't really a thing. There was never anything christmasy going on untill November 12th (we have an earlier thanksgiving than state side, so Nov11 is the last big date before Christmas) and while there was bustle, there was never these crazy shopping blowout christmas "sales" This may be because I didn't live in a city, or it may not have been a thing at all in this country. Having not grown up with it, it strikes me as absolutely crazy. Stampedes? People beating eachother half to death over a tickle me elmo(possibly with said product)? I've never understood.

I don't get it either, as I don't participate in it at all shopping-wise unless forced to by a family member. It wasn't a major thing when I was young either, that I recall. Usually, my family started holiday shopping in early December when I was young.
Now, it's like I said in the journal: we're conned into thinking a doorbuster cheapo tv is a great bargain and you need a SWAT team to keep people in line. I wish we were like Maine, where it's actually against state law for retailers to be open on Thanksgiving (which is what a lot of retailers are doing).
