Minor Update! (Stuff and things) by Yawg

I've been fairly quiet since August, and I've wanted to post something just to catch you guys up with what's been going on with my end of the internet:

1. Krystal's Big Thing

Updates here: https://www.weasyl.com/submission/1096150/krystal-s-big-thing-progress-and-streaming-info

Work on the Gigantic Krystal project continues- I've been working on these from Tuesday to Friday, every Tuesday-Friday, since September. Progress has been slower than I thought it would be (yet again, I grossly underestimated the time each piece would take, or how complicated doing alternate layers are. THAT SAID. That doesn't mean I'm unhappy in the least. I'm learning tons, I'm having fun, and because I'm streaming everything, it means I get to hang around with semi-cool people. So basically, that's been eating the majority of my time.

2. Legend of Jenny and Renamon

I'm kind of getting more and more anxious to get the comic rolling again, but that's going to be an impossibility while Krystal's Big Thing is.. being big.

I'm kind of planning on rolling out the comic in January(ish) but that brings up something I've been chewing on for a while: format. Someone -I won't name names- suggested that a vertical format wastes a lot of space; most people have horizontal monitors, so.... why not a horizontal, "Sunday Funnies" kind of format? He does raise a good point, but oddly, I don't really see that done too often online. What do you guys think? Horizontal, vertical or... maybe square?

3. Birthday Thanks

I've received an overwhelming amount of birthday wishes this year, and I can't tell you guys how much I appreciate that. Your support means a lot to me- you guys are awesome, and don't let anyone tell you different.

4. Sketches, sketches, sketches!

Holy crap, I need to put some coloured things going here in my gallery. It looks like a web site from the silent film era. I'll have to see what I can do about that in the short term D:

Horizontal could be interesting. Try it out?

I kinda have...? Nothing major that's ready to show- I've just been trying to get the story to flow visually horizontally. Turns out it's a bit difficult to wrap my head around.

Old dog, new tricks, and so forth.

To me there isn't that much difference between a horizontal or vertical format for a comic. The horizontal was adopted by newspapers to pack more comics onto a single page, but here on the internet I don't think it matters. I've always gone to max focus and read your work with no problems.

Thanks for asking and keep up the great work!

      Thanks yo'self for the input!

Personally, I'm liking the vertical layout the best. The 'actual comic page' layout fits what you're doing better, in my opinion, than a 'Sunday funnies' layout would. That's more for a two-to-three panel quickie than a full-blown comic page, and unless you make it fairly big it's hard to make out much detail. I know Eric Schwartz has had good success with that format for Sabrina Online, but in order for me to read the comic strips I have to max out the view. The way you have it now, I can read it on the site page no problem, no need for zooming.

Maybe save the 'strip' format for a small quickie comic? Maybe something humorous to do during your down time, or as a side project to see if you're comfortable enough drawing that way to make it a thing?

Either way, I vote for keeping the comic in the format it's in now. It works well, and it's easier to read. Plus it brings back the feel of actually reading a comic. But that's just my 3 cents worth (I found an extra penny in my jeans after I washed them, so I decided to throw that in).

Would it change your mind if I told you I didn't mean a 3-panel strip format? When I said horizontal, I meant more the colour 1/2 page weekend comics. The 5+ panel, narrative-friendly size. I'm struggling to come up with an example that won't show my age too badly...

Well, I still think you wouldn't be able to put that much detail into each panel, and the speech balloons would have to be larger to be legible, meaning I'd still have to zoom in to read them (unless you made the whole thing bigger, then I could just scroll down to read everything). I'd be willing to give it a shot and see how I felt, especially if it's easier for you to draw that way. It'd be different, that's for sure, but who knows. It might work better that way for the narrative, we'll just have to wait and see. So my final thoughts? Reserved, but I say go for it. I love the comic too much to ever stop reading it, and you're an awesome guy to talk to, so I trust you.
