I find that "can be" to be the key structure here. Though I must mention that I think of "anthropomorphism" in the Classical term, precisely in the manner the ancients view it, so to speak.
One can only shudder what creatures genetics could manifest should its potential be truly harnessed not only by our science departments, but also by industry and medical facilities.
There is a certain exhilarating thrill to playing God, and I can imagine as the field of genetics evolve, we may reach that delightful phase where we may be able to experience this thrill, or rather, some select individuals among us could.

There is also the concept of alien life form that can be discussed of. Should we encounter aliens, their appearance would be something that would defy the mere fabric of our imagination, breaking our reason into a million shards of insanity. It would be a truly Lovecraftian experiences.

As for anthropomorphism being real now, or furry fantasies being real... they are not, and I hope they will never be.
