Undertale, just another RPG? Nah... by DarkShadow777

It’s funny that I’m doing a review of a game that I’ve not played yet, but this is more likely to the fact that this review is not about the game itself, but the content behind it.

Toby Fox must be someone who has a deep understanding of human thinking and/or psychology, because this has a more deep impact than just regretting your bad choices. If you don’t know the story or gameplay, look for it over Youtube or just play the game -SPOILERS AHEAD-.

Basically, you have three main routes over this game, you can do it the pacifist way -Talk to everyone and solve their issues/problems, or just cheer them up-, the neutral way -Kiill just some people or be friend of nobody-, and finally, the killer way -Wipe everything is at your reach to level up-. No deal with this right? Except that, in this game, you have consequences from your choice… Yeah, mainly if you go killing everyone (Many people calls this “Genocide run”). In this case, the least is that you loose your soul.

But, what are the implications? The game is tainted forever (Well, some people can erase the taint, but that’s another story) and endings change slightly after a Genocide run… but, what does this has to do with you?

Probably this is meaningless to you, while other people just avoids going berserk to get the happy ending they want, but, is this really all?… I don’t think so.

Toby really made an interesting experiment -from my point of view- with this game, giving you the option to be pacifist or a serial killer, but preserving the consequences for the player. Many people imply that he did it as a resemblance of later RPG’s just focusing on leveling up and nothing more.

What I think, is that this has a more deep implication. What if you don’t care about the taint? You just go on a Genocide run and that’s all… maybe you think it’s boring to be a pacifist… Do you think that way? Others may think that befriending people and looking for alternative non-violent routes for solving conflicts is the best bet. Toby wants to see how many people decides for one thing or another… but, why?

Is this some kind of study to reflect behaviour un current gamer generations? Does he want to know what kind of players we have right now? Do choices in Undertale reflect in some way, the way you solve conflicts in life? Is Toby Fox willing to tell us that, a player that rejoices in doing a Genocide run, without any other benefit than killing people, is in fact, a person that can potentially hurt and do whatever is required to satisfy his own needs and ambitions, even if that means stepping over everyone else? Are new gamer generations corrupted somehow nowadays, or at least, some of them are?

For me, Undertale is a great experimentation lab, in which the player can act at will, getting consequences, and which serves as a termomenter to know how the players really react, probaby even in real life…

It's a great game, but if you play it, you can generally see that it's an anti-violence game and takes a strong stance.

    It's great, I love it.
