Catcalling...(class thoughts) by r-a-blackpaws

So today in class, we talked a bout a film called "War Zone", also known as "Street Harassment".

In it, a female filmmaker puts on nice attire, goes walking down the streets of major cities, records the reactions of people and questions them as to their reactions.

Now, why am I bringing this up?

In class, a fellow student said that she was out with her bf and she got a catcall while she was with her boyfriend. Basically, the person asked if they could have a threesome.

The thought that went through my head was "That is so disgusting."

Yet, as a person who does express as female at times...that is a concern for me.

One time, several years ago, I went out fully en femme. It was rather late at night (1-2am)...and I just went to the 24hour drugstore and back (maybe three miles).

I felt incredibly vulnerable and fearful. I was worried the cops were going to harass me (which has happened a LOT in the past) or that some people were going to drive by and hoot and holler at me (catcalling).

So yes, as a person who does lean female, I understand how catcalling can make a person feel...and how cautious you have to be in how you respond.

Sometimes, not responding works...sometimes, it doesn't. Sometimes cussing out the person works...sometimes it doesn't.

This is just one more thing that a genderfluid/transperson like myself has to deal with.

So, to those who are female or fluid or trans who read this...how do you view catcalling? What is the best way to deal with it?

Only time I got ANYTHING like that, it was backhanded and meant as an insult to someone else "Hey, my friend thinks you're hot" "SHUT UP DUDE!"
