Boneworm! by Cowboypunk

I've been reworking the Defans Amis universe and have more or less finished developing the cause of the apocalypse: boneworm. Boneworm is a parasitic fungus that pretty much left the world to be decaying remnants of human civilization. In a very short period of time, it managed to infect nearly every animal on the planet, many of which have died off. Those who manage to make it past the most dangerous early stages of infection grow mushrooms out of the open sores the fungus imposes on them and steadily mutate, generally developing features ambiguously akin to another species. Eventually and invariably, though, boneworm will grow too large and will overcome it's host.

I'm working on some communities and reworking some characters that Alette and Beau will come across in the next chapter now and will likely post most of my doodles and info on my tumblr.

You can see my illustrated doc detailing boneworm, how it affected the world, and general concept stuff on google docs. I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts~!

That is a fascinatingly cool concept, I love it!

      Thank you! :> <3

You are most welcome! I can't wait to see how far you go with it.

I want to read this all in detail and give you some solid feedback so please give me some time, but I like what I saw skimming through. So brace yourself for positive impact!

Ohh, yay! Pre-emptive thank you for your time!!

Okay, okay, finally had a chance to sit down and really read this comprehensively.

So, you pointed out there are changes in the mental state of the host, namely panic/paranoia in the early part of stage 2 and then eventually a dissociative state. In the later stages you did not really mention mental state beyond "unpredictable behaviors." Is this just because the overall mental state of the host varies too much? Is there any chance as they mutate that the people see themselves as more than human, evolved, empowered? Or is there more the chance for further disassociation and aloofness in mentality? Even becoming non-sentient in a way? Let alone possible animalistic behaviors developed from the previous host's influence.

As for the fungus itself, giving it was hardy enough to withstand any barrage of tests and treatments that would have been formulated in the beginning to fight this "disease," it would need to have some attributes far beyond the normal fungal infections before it. Establishing it as something that infects on such a systemic level gives rise to the issue of treatment without just sickening or even killing the host, so that helps your Boneworm infection immensely. But then there are many medicines and natural remedies in existence that can wipe out some of the worst fungal infections within a week or two. So Boneworm would have to have something within its formation and structure to defend against medical treatment, even better, lashing out against the host in response so that the person cannot keep undergoing treatment without further risk to their own health. Or it could simply be pain-based, but then medical practitioners would utilize anesthesia. I'm more bringing this up for two reasons:
        1. To help build up possible factual points to aid the reader in suspending disbelief.
        2. I realize you want to leave it open for enigmatic effect, but these kinds of things can be thought out (outside of the story) to figure if there is any room for a cure or at least counteractive treatment in this point that seems beyond recovery.

I like that you kept its explanation to where it was so foreign and hard to figure its origins that it did cause panic and chaos. That helps with the downfall of society, definitely. I might have some more thoughts on it, but I'll leave it here for now.

First off, omg thank you for reading and thinking about this and taking the time to give me such thorough questions and thoughts!! <3

The changes in mental state are almost purely in stage 2, and fade off at stage 3 as overall sensation starts to go and a bit less dissolving-you-alive is going on. I left the rest as "unpredictable behaviors" simply because the only things affecting the mental state of the infected after stage 2 is due to either how the host is coping with the situation (probably a lot of instances of aggression, depression and anxiety due to fear or trauma, as well as all kinds of responses and dysmorphia from just having your body change in crazy ways you don't understand, not to mention responses to sociological issues as society fell), or due to very physical problems the fungus causes based on either location (e.g. some of the fungus is rooted close to the brain and causing problems there, akin to the problems brain tumors may cause) or based on mutations (e.g. mutations may affect the thyroid and cause changes in behavior because of the thyroid's handling hormones differently).

The mutations can physically empower or weaken any of those affected by it, whether or not you get something useful is just a roll of the dice, and whether or not it's perceived as a power or a weakness depends on the opinions of the person affected. Boneworm otherwise doesn't alter behavior and people are still much as they were before, mentally speaking (I generally want to avoid them being argued as inherently less-than-human or not human after mutation, and changes to a persons psychology does that much more so than changes to physical appearance), although they may adopt animalistic behaviors simply because they grow to identify with the attributes they've developed in some way.

I'll clean up the doc to be clearer about all that later.

I left boneworm's background vague for a variety of reasons:

          • It's enigmatic for me, so I'm less inclined to write characters who understand it more than necessary (because I'm very inclined to do so when the information is there, aaaaand I'm very inclined to put that information there aaaaaugh)
          • It's enigmatic for readers, so they can come up with their own theories and ideas based on things that they've seen and learned in the comic (which is also a cool way to mirror a lot of what I want to talk about in the story: everyone has incredibly variable ideas about whats going on and nobody really knows who's right. I'm interested in approaching the values and problems of ignorance and how it impacts our abilities to create, understand and cope in Defans Amis.)
          • It's just not entirely necessary for the story, I generally want to avoid breaching ideas like "lets try to fix it" and mostly want to focus on "what do we do now that we're all scary and have mushrooms coming out of our fingers? We need to think about whats for dinner and how we can get our phones to work again, guys, I need to know if my aunt in Alabama is okay." End of the world infection stories often focus on going back and what was, and I kind of want to focus on moving forward and the coping mechanisms people use for that in this regard. By all means, people may be trying to come up with a cure/treatment, just not the people Alette and Beau are going to come across.

However, reading this and writing this out more or less made me decide to approach however I myself think of boneworm's functionality as it spread early on as also just another theory that is just as valid as any other theory, which may allow me some leeway as far as my first point goes. A lot of what I've thought about in regards to how it must have worked involve things like you mentioned, although my alternate for fungicides was simply the pervasiveness of boneworm; since it infects literally every macroscopic creature, basically all dead bugs need to be avoided and EVERYONE has to live on fungicides forever, not to mention how livestock and other important animals will be affected and impact the sustainability of human societies. I also really like the idea of the fungus trying to take down the host in response to treatments. People in the comic may bring up some of these ideas you've mentioned as their theories, though~ :3 (as well as magic and Jesus and whatever else they can think of, which also may or may not be true)

            You're welcome! (เน)[D
I'm really loving this concept so far so I wanted to make sure to give thorough feedback.

Good explanations, and yeah, I know how it is doing such to leave more for the reader to contemplate while also not get bogged down yourself with technical points. I'm really bad with worrying about if things are explained well myself.

Oh yes, if you ever want extra material for characters throwing around theories (factual, paranoid, spiritual, etc.) then you can count on me for ideas.

            • Link

Oh, gosh, yeah. I regularly have to slap my hand to keep from obsessively researching and developing how things work in fictional universes. It's easy to get distracted from actually creating anything because finding out how things could theoretically work is so interesting and so time consuming :p I'm so glad you find it exciting and so happy to hear all your thoughts iui

I would actually like to incorporate ideas and characters of readers and other artists into Defans Amis (I'm also doing a design trade with home home right now for a character that will appear in the upcoming chapter :3) if you'd want to come up with something like a character or a theory and are okay with me potentially manipulating it some to fit into the story, I'd totally be interested in adding it to the comic and naming you for your ideas help~ <3
