Question about waiting for commissions. by Haubitze

I’m not an artist, I can’t draw, so I would like some input from people who ARE artists. How long is an acceptable amount of time to wait for a commission? I 100% understand emergencies and delays, and as long as the artist I commissioned is in contact with me throughout any issues I am perfectly fine waiting long amounts of time.

How long is too long though? Especially with no contact, or actions like the person deleting their gallery or switching accounts on the site you commissioned them from?

I’m currently waiting on eleven pieces of art. The most outstanding commission I’ve been waiting on was paid for over a year ago and was $150USD. After the initial conversation and payment, the only contact I managed to get out of this person was an email on 3/29/2015. Nothing since then.

Since Paypal will not issue refunds/chargebacks after a (very short) period of time, I am out a lot of money.

So, how long is too long?

I think it depends a bit on the artist. Usually if you look at the submissions you can get an idea of their typical workflow, and if they're maybe out of commission for some reason. I think an occasional friendly "hey, just wanting to know about the progress" checkup isn't an unreasonable thing, and it may give you an idea of the situation. To me a year seems awhile, but I usually try to turn a picture around fairly quickly from the date of payment.

I expect a few weeks to a month for turnaround, with updates or a queue. (Updates are also useful for figuring out if edits and alterations are necessary.) With delays like this, demanding an explanation is reasonable. "You got overwhelmed but there's no shame in returning the money and saying that you can't finish the work." If you can't get an explanation, it's reasonable to assume that they've absconded with your money...
