About stuff by FamiliarAlien

Doesn't really affect here all that must though it will likely kill links on images (I'll have to look through images and try to catch those) but I'm thinking, after 11 years of being there, I'm going to quit DeviantART.

The site is staffed by people that clearly do not give a fuck about building and sustaining a community and not only that but the fact they keep using fluff language to suggest that's their goal in some desperate ploy to keep the site going is just salt on wounds. I've given the site a 2 month period to do SOMETHING to prove they actually give a shit but its not looking that great 8/. Its been a long while coming DA has been walking on very thin ice imo but after that insulting shit they posted a while back relating to stuff like art theft and now trying to make members flip the bill on THEIR fuckups that led the site down the path of financial failure I'm at the point of "HAHA FUCK YOU!"

So yeah given the following I plan to try to be far more active here, maybe even using LE GASP the forums assuming those are very open and friendly. There are indeed a few things I consider deal breakers if I have to deal with them a lot (you can always ask about it but I rather not go into depths about it here). Not only that but I'm also going to try to start using FA again as unlike DA they actually resolved the issue I had a problem with rather than continuously just packing on more and more to the point they've dragged out my almost endless patience for bullshit to its breaking point.

I figured I've brought it up at DeviantArt itself and on Tumblr which is the other major place I post art so I may as well bring it up here too.

I'm still on DA, though I don't post artwork on there anymore and haven't been on for a while. What's this about them boosting the cost of the premium membership stuff...? What did they screw up, exactly?

    • Link

well first they change the name of it to "core" and literally charge roughly double for it and supposedly they actually reduced some of the features (like the space available for sta.sh) instead of increasing anything. Not only that but people are trying to make people that are outraged at the bullshit look bad by claiming they need to charge that much so we should feel guilty for being SOOOOOOOO self serving. Problem with the following is former staff have come forward to call them out at investing poorly which explains why they have to up the price. In other words they fucked up and are putting that cost on the userbase... you know the userbase they NEVER LISTEN TO EVER BUT CLAIM THEY'RE ALL ABOUT COMMUNITY. Its the biggest pile of horseshit imaginably and I cannot believe there are a considerable amount of people on DA actually white knighting for the site while claiming those upset at their shit are just cheap or something.
I am not paying $60 a year (because Canadian dollar is worth less than the US one) for something that wasn't worth it back when it was around $35 especially knowing I'm basically paying $25 to bail a company out which has mistreated the community of its website for years. The fact this info is readily available and people still choose to keep paying while having a smug sense of superiority about not complaining about a change speaks volumes of the sheer level of apathy a human of producing. You know how fun with that huge ego, I rather not have one and be richer and feel less like like a tool in a few assholes' desperate attempt to get a few more years out of this art edition of myspace.

So they screw up financially and thought the best fix is to charge people more for premium stuff without giving them more perks? Yeesh. I wouldn't pay for it, either.

I don't understand why anyone would defend this nonsense. I guess the popular artists who make a lot of money from commissions don't have a problem with the price increase?? :/

It sucks the direction that DA is going. It used to be a nice place where I can meet cool peeps, but now...ech.

Tbh it wouldn't surprise me as usual its "brats on DA thinking counter culture is intelligence" because basically any time something happens and there's an outrage about it a bunch of people defend/go against it. As much as outrage usually is crying wolf occasionally the wolves are real so yeah not looking into things is probably what DA is depending on right now.

The sense of community has been dead in DA since about I'd say 2008 and has gotten just worse and worse and the years have gone by. Pretty much as soon as DA started to get much more lax with actually enforcing ANYTHING people started to progressively leave for other sites that actually did be it things related to art theft, plagiarism, harassment and removing ToS breaking work like hate art and porn.

Basically most people stay on DA for two reasons:
          a) Its their major place for feedback
          b) Its their major source of money making.

No one stays for the community because its a miserable one full of immaturity and hatred and again THAT'S DA'S FUCKING FAULT due to lazy moderation. They talk about community yet don't show even the slightest inkling towards making sure the community is safe and inviting. Ugh... I"m so agitated with them and have been for a while, this ranting has being marinating within my soul for a while so I hope it doesn't come off too angry.

That's what's always bothered me the most, and the situation is pretty fucking sad.

Eh, you're not coming off as too angry--I've seen quite a few people who're as pissed off about the situation as you are.

            • Link

=n= Yep DA killed its own community and now wants what little is left to pay for it without actually actively doing anything that could save this trainwreck of a website.

Glad I"m not alone there because it is a frustrating situation especially for us site veterans that really do not want to leave but are only hurting themselves by staying sighs.

apparently they fired a lot of staff members too. probably fired all the good ones who actually did things right

    • Link

      Why the mass firing?

      • Link

less employees = less people that need to be paid

        • Link

Seems like a silly move seeing as how the site keeps getting bigger.

          • Link

exactly how that means less staff moderating and helping users with actual answers. i heard the help desk is total shit now

    • Link

Yep as far as I've heard they let off a bunch of the better staff, it wouldn't surprise me they did so because they would have stood in the way of these counter intuitive changes. And yeah the worst part is watching people still defend the site even on the journal by one of those former staff calling attention to the fact the price only went up because of poor investing on DA's part NOT BECAUSE THE SITE COST SIGNIFICANTLY MORE TO RUN. In other words people are telling people they shouldn't mind a change which is essentially making poor teenagers and college student bail out a multi million dollar company that fucked up largely because it doesn't not listen to anyone.

Also watching people vilify anyone that's spoken out against this bullshit by jumping to conclusion about why people are angry is sure fun, love being called cheap for... ya know refusing to bail out a company that's shown a considerable amount of shitting on the community in recent years. Yep clearly its I just don't want to pay more money rather than why the money is necessary and what's going into it. Must be nice to throw money at anything regardless of the moral integrity of it while acting like those that care about how their money is used are the stupid immature ones. A+!

it's sad, really. it seems as if everyone is working together to drive deviantArt down the shithole further and further.

        • Link

:,c Indeed. Sometimes I wonder if folks even realize they're the driving force in well... driving folks away and its not my problem. I'd be foolish to want to wilfully stay after knowing what's happening on site these days.
