Hi Everyone by LauraGarabedian

Thanks for finding me over here :) Just wanted to let you know that I've been running amock on here for about 3-6 months now and really enjoy it! Yes there are still some clunky bits that need to be worked out, but overall it seems to be a lot cleaner than FA and I LOVE that it lets commissioners make 'collections' of their work! That actually goes a long way to protect artists and commissioners! Want to know why? Ask Rooth ( https://www.weasyl.com/journals/rooth) he did some research on it and apparently it has something to do with making a compilation of work of your character helps keep the rights soundly in your corner or something. Which is cool! Anyhow, I'll be posting a lot more over here now that Beta is open and there has been a lot of movement. Considering taking a sample badge sometime in the next week too, so keep your eyes peeled!

Cheers!

~L

Right, right I completely agree with the collection thing.

I see people complain about the Collections, but I think that its a really awesome thing to have, because although there are a few cool people that do remember, sometimes people forget to give credit to the original artist, (Although this can usually be solved by just contacting them, sometimes a few slip through the cracks, and I don't know until YEARS later) Another thing that I hate is when someone re-posts my art, even with proper attribution, I still get less recognition for it than the person who re-posted it!

I think that an art site should mainly be for the artist, watchers are important too, but overall they should come second in their needs. (Is pelted by rotten tomatoes)

Lol - I mostly agree with you but LOVE that this gives the commissioners the option to 'collect' the work done for them but still keeps credit with the artist! I think that is fantastic! And I like that it lets people immediately who their friends have been commissioning! So Cool!

I do like the collection feature. :) If you ever decide to upload the sketches of Raul, send them my way! =D

Will do! If you send a message in a week or so (when I get home) I'll be sure to do that

lol If I try to remember, I will.

I really like the Collections feature as well, but as a non-artist (but frequent commissioner!) I get frustrated that I can't show ALL of the stuff I've had commissioned unless a) the artist is actually on Weasyl, which is not the case for a number of my pieces and b) the artist actually decides to post their older work, which for a number of artists seems not to be the case. :/ On FA if I've wanted to submit a commission I've always asked the artist beforehand and given appropriate credit; it would be nice to still have that capability if the artist in question doesn't fit both a & b above. It may seem strange, but it's been a social blessing for me to do so on FA - I've met people I wouldn't have normally met because they've noticed the stuff I've commissioned.

Actually, I think in the Weasyl TOS, you can post artwork you haven't done if (a) you get permission from the artist, and (b) they have not already posted it. But I'd have to double-check.

Judging from admin statements the actual guidelines come out pretty similar to FA. You can submit things made for you unless prohibited by the artist. Above all, the use of collections is encouraged but entirely optional.

    • Link

Hmm that does make sense, though Rooth and Onnes say you can do like on FA if/when that comes up. I just really enjoy clicking on collections from people and knowing immediately who did it and knowing the diff promptly between people commissioning and people doing the art! Just nice to know who is who! And its a BLAST seeing the wide variety from people I know who commission a lot, can go to their collections and immediately be at the various artists pages :)

      • Link

Well, that's good then! I do really like the Collections, and will use those whenever I can... but it's nice to know I can still submit my other stuff with permission.

  • Link

Well with any new website it will have its hiccups, I am hoping it takes off and out paces FA.

I've since discovered a couple of downsides to the "collections" thing -- I can't put my own description on it (I often embellish, make comments about the artist, advertise if they're open for commissions, perhaps add a bit of story-ness), and I do not get notified of comments left on the collected artwork (only the artist gets notified of comments). Would be nice if those can be fixed.

Honestly I think it's better for us this way - I mean nice if people can click over, but rarely do they do it (even if you encourage it) I've Already gotten watchers that came over b/c my work was in Idess/Nym/Utunu's collections, I know b/c I had already posted it to my site and the minute that it went in their collection I got faves/watches. Whereas I rarely noticed a jump when you posted my work on FA (and maybe it's just the particular work) but I like seeing a bit of a jump b/c of it.

I may recommend you posting some stories under the writing areas and then make a link to the image that goes with? Then you can post writing, and perhaps a post-script about working with the artist, and then link over? I get that you like to embellish, and your stories and stuff are fun, and yes I think the comment notifications would be a definite thing they should add for you but in regards to the notes... dunno. Seems like that would be hard with it linking back to the original on the artists page. So yeah, write more! I think it would be fun to see more written work from commissioners!

Could be a factor of growth rate. My watcher count increases slowly but steadily, so between one re-post of yours and the next, there might only be a few dozen new watchers, and only a portion of them will click-through. So except for the first one or two of your commissions I posted, any boost might be only barely perceptible in the 'noise' of your regular stream of new watchers. Here on Weasyl, though, it just went open beta and there's a huge influx of new accounts, which could be skewing perceptions a bit.

But yes, not having that comment notification is sad. Takes away some of my ability to participate. And absolutely, posting writing samples and linking it to the piece somehow (is that even possible with 'compose'? I'll have to experiment) is a great idea. TI should start doing that! Although, as regards features, that's no different than what's possible on FA. And the average commissioner is not going to bother doing so, in either case.

Anyhow, while the "collection" feature is cool for me personally, unless updates to it show up on the notifications of people watching me, whatever 'signal boost' there might have been for the artist is lost. Which is a bummer.

        • Link

I am noticing it being really specific to when they upload to their collections though. Which in regards to your last paragraph, the signal boost isn't lost at all! It's better! B/c it links directly to the artists gallery when your watchers get a notification. The updates do show up on the notifications of people watching you! If you go to the art icon where it shows new submissions, under that is new characters by people you follow, and under that is new art added to collections by people you follow! It shows the title, who it was collected by and the artist, and when you click it takes you to the artists page! That is why it is so exciting to me! Gives all of the info and links directly to the artists page!

          (all of the exclamation points)

anyhow, yes, excited. And yeah, writing samples with a www.blahblahblah link is all I was thinking - b/c if you have it specifically with the image people won't realize that you are trying to showcase writing/actually talk to them. I admit that I am often guilty of not reading comments and this can give you a little writing prompt and then at the end or beginning post a link over to the original.

            (all of the exclamation points)

I was about to say! OMG! LOL! ;)

No, but really, I didn't notice collections showing up in the people I was watching, so I assumed that either NONE of them were making any (entirely possible), or notifications of such were not happening (which is apparently not the case). So ... COOL!

Still want notification of comments, but that's more for me than the artist. ;)

            • Link

Ah, nope, they show up :) And I think it's AWESOME!!! (EXCLAMATORY MARKINGS AHOY)

And I get it, be nice if they implemented that for you guys, so that once it was in your collection your received notifications of comments
