Reminder: Patreon Request Stream tomorrow! Also, Paypal alternatives? by thatlittlegoblin

Yep, tomorrow's the day for the last Patreon stream for a while (though I will be keeping commissions open so don't worry, I'll just be taking it easy while I prep for and deal with baby related stuff) before I close it down until next year. When I re-open it, it's going to most likely be very different than it is now, and I'll probably be using it to make COMICS. :D

As a quick reminder, the time for the stream tomorrow will be 2pm-8pm EST.

Pregnancy's goin just fine, if you've been following me on twitter ya already know more than you probably wanted to hahaha.

SO THIS THING WITH PAYPAL, CRAZY HUH? Yeah the robo-calls I'm not a fan of, especially since while the say they won't be selling your number out to other companies, it doesn't actually state that in their AUP.

When in doubt, I go with what's on the contract and don't trust word of mouth. So I'm looking at officially closing my paypal account and going with an alternative.

I've heard Stripe is a pretty good choice, and heard a couple other names thrown around like WePay and GoogleCheckout- Stripe being the major contender because all it takes is a card to make a transaction. WePay I hear has an invoicing system like Paypal does, which is convenient but I'm not sure if adult art is allowed to be sold through them.

Any thoughts, comments, or other suggestions you can throw at me?

    Been looking at Dwolla for a bit; they don't charge anything for transactions, don't have any restrictions on adult or digital content, and appear to have a decent dispute resolution policy. Only major downside so far is it's US-only.

    • Link

      Yeah, I looked at Dwolla a while back. US only sadly isn't an option for me- I have some very lovely repeat customers who live in other countries and don't wanna alienate them. :(

    PayPal has officially rescinded it's previous statements about opting out of robocalls. However, they haven't said what the method will be as of yet.

      But, if you were to use an alternative, Stripe is pretty good. Humble Bundle uses it, and it's really easy to use on the consumer's end.

      • Link

        Yeah, it's just that saying they're making that change and actually implementing it are two different things. Their CS reps don't even know how to let folks opt out at this point in time bc there's no option for that currently.
        Plus, I offer artwork that skirts the line of their TOS anyways so might as well try to jump ship while I can.

        I didn't know Humble Bundle used Stripe! That's cool, makes me feel a little bit better about it.

          Agreed, shady business is still shady business.

    I dunno about US law, but I know under EU law they can't do that, they have to ask permission to be able to make marketing calls to you and you can opt out whenever.

    • Link

      Yeah no such provision in the US, which is why there's such a big to-do over it. There's a National Do Not Call list you can sign up for, but being signed up with their service exempts PayPal from that restriction. Plus they were threatening to close ppls accts if their "polls" went ignored.

      Changed their tune pretty quick, but what's on paper is what's on paper.

      • Link

        Yeah, hopefully they decide to not be complete dicks about it, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

    I've been hearing Amazon Payments thrown around a lot and hearing good things, but haven't used them myself.

  • Link

    Ah crapbaskets. Well, guess I missed that one too! Oh well. Guess I'm waiting till you're back on patreon!

    • Link

      If you miss any streams, you can always send me a note with your request details!

      Usually I ask that you send em in before the stream or day of, but since I'm closing down I'm willing to make an exception. :D

    90% of what you've seen is complete bullshit of people freaking out. People shouldn't be spreading misinformation around and causing panic without actually reading the material first.

    Long story short, you honestly have nothing to worry about and everyone is kicking up a fuss about things they don't even understand.

    • Link

      I honestly hadn't heard about the "copyright fuss" addressed in your link there, and didn't mention that at all- just the phone number issue which is akin to what Facebook does with phone numbers.

      My problem with their changes solely has to do with the potential of them selling my phone number to advertising companies, or freezing my account if I won't answer my phone for them.

      Again, I know they've said word of mouth that they're going to have an option to opt out eventually but as of now there's no way to implement folks opting out.

      In addition, they could at any time potentially freeze my account because I offer adult artwork that features furries. Beastiality is not allowed to be sold under their ToS, and my work skirts the line closely enough it could eventually become an issue.

      • Link

        Well, actually there's more details on that. Paypal considers adult artwork and pornographic content a 'high risk business' and to subjugate that risk they don't provide services for that.

        However they do outline the use of your phone number, however that's not in the AUP. That falls under the Privacy Policy.

        "How We Use the Personal Information We Collect

        Our primary purpose in collecting personal information is to provide you with a secure, smooth, efficient, and customized experience. We may use your personal information to:

        provide PayPal Services and customer support;
        process transactions and send notices about your transactions;
        resolve disputes, collect fees, and troubleshoot problems;
        prevent potentially prohibited or illegal activities, and enforce our User Agreement;
        customize, measure, and improve PayPal Services and the content, layout, and operation of our websites and applications;
        deliver targeted marketing, service update notices, and promotional offers based on your communication preferences;
        contact you at any telephone number, by placing a voice call or through text (SMS) or email messaging, as authorized by our User Agreement;
        compare information for accuracy and verify it with third parties.
        "
        And in the User Agreement
        "1.10 Calls to You; Mobile Telephone Numbers. By providing PayPal a telephone number (including a mobile telephone number), you consent to receiving autodialed and prerecorded message calls from PayPal at that number. If we determine that a telephone number you have provided to us is a mobile telephone number, we may categorize it as such in our systems and in your Account Profile, and you consent to receive text messages from us about your use of the PayPal Services at that number."

        Services paypal provides are the only acceptable use outlined, so you'll only be receiving calls from Paypal, pertaining to the useage of their services and surveys from them. If you read the update notes, they actually point you towards section 1.10

        From that article I linked you prior, "In the ToU, “Service” and “Services” are defined terms, wherein

        individuals and businesses send and receive electronic money online [and] other financial and non-financial services closely related to online payments. "
        Legally, if they give someone else your phone number, you can rain hell on them, since nowhere have they stated you consent to them selling your phone number.

        • Link

          Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, okay- that makes much more sense. Every single article I'd read said that they were reserving the right to use your phone number for things like promotional texts and calls as well, ie: advertising, and that there was no provision against them selling the number to 3rd parties.

          Just more poorly worded shenanigans from them, I suppose.

          • Link

            Yeah, it really pisses me off the amount of people that read one portion of it and go "HOLY SHIT" then speculate something more extreme and spread word around about that. :/
