BLFC, art plans, current status and Twitter. by Sparkyopteryx

The con: Was ridiculous amounts of fun, even if I was more an observer than anything. First ever convention (furry or otherwise). Got to meet some great people, including an old art friend from waaaayyy back in high school. Go figure, she makes fursuits now, hah. I never would have guessed but then again at the same time, I'm also not surprised. Unfortunately I did not sell Faraday or Pyramid Scheme, but this aforementioned friend and I have already discussed possible opportunities to get me into a local deal, so I won't be putting those up for sale online yet. Unless you make me an offer I can't refuse!

Future plans for art this year: Make more art (obviously), but make more that I can also make into prints. There's a print shop within walking distance that makes them in great quality that I'm going to look into. Eventually get merchandise and smaller art that I can open an Etsy or something similar with. I'm also shopping around for a laminator so I can start doing badges! Since the fiance and I have decided we'll be doing more of the con scene next year, I'm going to start prepping and making plans for this eventuality. Also I've been reviewing my commission info and such and realize there are a lot of discrepancies, so I'll be overhauling pricing and commission info in the coming weeks. I'll let you all know when this happens.

Current Status: Now that the con is over, I can dedicate all of my time to getting art done, namely those last trades and most importantly my extant commissions so I can open for some new ones!

Twitter: I finally caved and got one, since Tumblr I've found is pretty abysmal as far as networking and exposure goes so might as well plunge face-first into more social media. I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to use it yet, but it'll probably be entirely for networking and posting some art and WiPs initially. Just made it, so it has nothing on it right now: https://twitter.com/Sparkyopteryx

Hope this last May has been treating you all well so far. Not looking forward to summer on the horizon I'm afraid, but I'll try to make the most of it when it arrives.

The con was indeed quite a lot of fun and certainly gave a unique understanding of Furries I don't think you can get anywhere else.

Furry Fiesta is the first convention I ever went to and to date the only one really other than a small, local comicon. Furcons are great! It has such a wonderful energy and lots of cool, nice people. Glad you had fun for your first time going.

We'll be planning on sticking to the West Coast for now (since a few of the big California based ones are a road trip away for us) and local deals, but eventually we might be able to go further afield years down the road. I was surprised just how personable a lot of people were and how easygoing and relaxing the social atmosphere actually was.

I was only there for one day but I was so glad I got to see your pieces in person! The stippling was just plain awesome in a way you can't quite get looking at the digital scan (which still looks amazing). It's made me want to submit stuff of my own next year, even.

Whoa, you were there huh? I'll be going for sure next year so you should give a shout out so I can say hi in person! I'm mildly disappointed that one didn't sell, but as I mentioned I think I might have other avenues soon if no one steps forward and claims it, hah.

Absolutely! We weren't sure if we'd have time/energy this year so I didn't want to get anyone's hopes up, but the spouse and I are already excited for the next time. I'd say it was a pretty good first con experience all told!

Ahh, yeah I completely understand. The fiance and I initially were only planning to be there for Friday but we met up with some great people and it ended up being too fun not to go for the rest of the weekend, heh. Will you be going to SNAFU this year, out of curiosity?

          • Link

Unfortunately not! The spouse and I have run games there before in the past but it's just a bit much for us in general; we don't do well in crowded/noisy spaces (which was one thing that the setup at BLFC really had going for it: lots of elbow room!). I also have to me mindful of my inner grumpy grandma because nothing has made me feel my age more powerfully than the last time I ran a (vanilla) World of Darkness game at the UNR game club...

Glad you had a positive first convention experience! (Even if you didn't sell your stuff :< )

I feel the same about tumblr. Feels like there is no way to interact at all...

And I don't really use twitter either, but that just feels like a Facebook with post length limitations :B a lot of people like it though.

Always looking forward to seeing more art :D

Tumblr is...alright. I keep all of the social baggage of that place at arms' length though, but it really leaves something to be desired. And I'm not sure if I'll entirely warm up to Twitter (since I love to talk and interact one-on-one) but I'm just trying to at least cover all of the social media bases.

There will definitely be more although a lot of it is currently in the progress stages, haha. I expect it will all come to a head in June, right before I initiate hermit mode to get away from summer.

Hmm, cool, you have a twitter now! :D I'll make sure to follow it, even if my username is different there. Also- I envy you being able to go to a con, haha, it must have been fun. I am still too poor for that, but maybe in the future it will be possible. Good luck with your future plans and art.
