Skunk Encounter by Aldin

No, not recently. But a memory that was triggered last night while watching Betsy Betsy's art stream. She was doing a reference sheet for someone switching their fursona to a skunk. I won't mention names here as it's not up to me to make that announcement for them.

That skunk encounter was 19 years back (Yeah, I'm a "geezah" squirrel) as a leader on a scouting trip to Cobscook Bay State Park in far eastern Maine. It was a clear, starry night. If you haven't seen the heavens in the wilderness, you really haven't seen the stars. Still and quiet night, not a breath of wind at all. Beautiful, mesmerizing. And the call of nature drew me to the nearest outhouses a pretty good hike down the trail from our group campsite. As I approached the outhouses, the leaves started rustling in a tree about 15 ft (~4.5m) away like in a light breeze. Except, as I've already stated, there was no wind that night.

Out came the flashlight (stars so bright you didn't need one on the trail) and shined up into this white birch tree. There about 20 feet up having "breakfast" was a skunk. The rustling was it pulling at leaves and munching them. It blinked at the light in its eyes briefly and went back to munching.

Did what I needed to do in the outhouse, went back to the campsite and warned the scouts. Several went to watch the skunk, but kept the same distance I did and didn't disturb it. They'd talk about it the rest of the weekend and for months after--how they got to watch a skunk and didn't get sprayed.
