MCFC Experience by Rob Swanson

( I am cross-posting this from reddit. The origional posting can be found at http://www.reddit.com/r/furry/comments/30mvdv/mcfc_experience/ )

Hey, Rob Swanson here, just thought I'd post about my experiences at the Motor City Furry Convention. I was only able to attend yesterday (Friday the 27th) because I wasn't able to get today or tomorrow off at work. Not sure if anyone here on Reddit will be interested, but here goes. Oh yeah, this was the first furry con I've ever been to, if that matters at all.
EDIT: One other thing, just in case anyone reading this was there at the convention yesterday, I was the guy with the brown hair, glasses, and grey/blue Tiger's tee shirt.
Around 10:45am I arrived at the hotel. I could have been there a few minutes earlier if the sign for the place wasn't so small. (It's rather easy to miss the turn-off, if you ask me.) After that I spent about two hours in the registration line. While this was a longer wait than expected, I really don't blame the convention staff at all. Apparently a small piece of the ceiling had fallen and damaged the computer that was being used to run the badge printer. They did get that sorted out pretty quickly though, which was nice.
Once I got registered I wandered around a little while. If I could back-peddle here a bit, I didn't go to this con with anyone or knowing anyone would be there. I went because it was about a 30 minute drive from home and it sounded like a fun time. So, around 1:00pm(ish) I wound up meeting my first fursiter. Unfortunately I didn't remember the guy's name. If anyone reading this was there it was the guy with the red panda partial suit. After that I did lunch at the hotel's lunge/bar/entrance area. Around 2:00pm the opening ceremonies were held. It was right before that started that I met Uncle Kage for the first time. It was kind of brief though, he just stopped by to ask if they were letting people in the door for the ceremonies yet. After that I attended the "So you want to be a performer?" panel, which seemed a little under-attended. Honestly, with the number of fursuiters and musicians running around in this fandom I thought that more people would have had interest in that panel. Anyways, once that panel was over it was time for more wandering and a trip to the hotel's bar. I really want to give props to the hotel's bar staff here. Not only were they amazing about putting up with all the people from the convention, but the drink selection was a lot more than I expected from a small hotel bar. Plus they had redone the menus to give all the dishes "Furry" names and descriptions. I know that probably happens at every convention, but it's always nice to see hotel staff put in the extra effort to welcome convention attendees. Later in the night I ended up meeting a few people that I had been following on Furaffinity. MaryMouse and Chase were their names, at least the ones they're using on Furaffinity. Bear in mind, I only really knew these guys by reputation, so it was more of a "Hey I know of that his/her work" moment than anything else. Near 7:00pm I wound up going to Uncle Kage's Story Hour. The event lived up to its reputation, at least in my opinion. After that I got to speak to Uncle Kage a bit and we both wound up at the bar for a bit. (I left pretty quickly though.)
So, winding things down, around 10:00pm(ish) I wound up heading out. It was a fun time overall. I would definitely recommend this convention to a friend and really like the way that the staff handled themselves.
PS: On a semi-related note, I'd like to ask if there are any fur-meets going on in the next few weeks. If not, would anyone be interested in scheduling one? (If there's interest in scheduling one or having one scheduled, I'll create a second thread for that.)
