Pondering by Todex

I'm still pondering about some aspects of Weasyl, which seem to be rather strange to me right now.

One of them being "Characters".... what is the point of separating that from other submissions?

Is this meant for roleplaying? Is it meant for fursonas? Why can't the same information be presented in a regular submission? :V I mean you can format submission texts any way you like!

Also: Why are there so many submissions in which the uploader didn't manage to tag the gender of the character(s) @N@
How is anyone supposed to filter submissions if nothing is taggeeeeedddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd * explodes into tiny tiny pieces *
There is no other way to filter things on this site!

FA has a field for the gender(s), Sofurry requires at least one gender-specific tag per submission but Weasyl doesn't.
But it would really help.

How do you people who make use of the site a lot ever manage to find anything? D:

Most features here I just do not use.

    • Link

Which other ones do you not use?

      • Link

The "upload on behalf of someone else" feature. I know what the site was trying to do with this. To eliminate the duplicate file uploads when commissioners repost art done by artists. rendering the commissioner's posting of it, as a mere link to the artist's original upload. I appreciate what the goal of this feature was. Namely to eliminate wasted server space, and ensure that the artist gets the faves etc.Far too often I have shared work I have commissioned with my watch-list in which I tried to insist "PLEASE FAVE THE ORIGINAL." However the mechanic does not take account of the mechanics of the way a lot of furs post comments. A lot of artists appreciate constructive criticism of their technique and style as comments on their submissions. However the commissioners (some of us anyway) prefer the "creepier" comments which artists do not always appreciate. As all the comments go to the original link (I am not even 100% certain the commissioner is notified of new comments on submissions they have merely linked to) a lot of them fall on deaf ears at best, or at worst offend the artist. Hence I continue to upload commissions as MY account with just a link to the original and a plea to comment/fave the original too. So, good idea, but not 100% thought through.

          Correct.
I think eventually the clever coders of the site can just perform a quick file hash check upon uploading, and simply use the same piece of data if people upload copies of the same thing in different places, but keeping the comments and other things separate. Or so!

          • Link

            We already do this!

            • Link

You do?! You sneaky bastards, that's great!

            • Link

You totally should advertise neat behind-the-scenes features of the site to score extra coolness-points!

  • Link

I think that's what e621 is for XD As for the Folders (Characters) it is for those whom are anal about keeping their characters apart for both role playing and organizational purposes. Others like me don't give a fuck XD

    • Link

Well I think it is important to have that functionality in a place that isn't all about stolen/harvested art though.. I mean e621, sure, nice, but no artists are there. It is a dead place for those that wish to talk to the ones that actually made the pics :P

      And hmm.

      • Link

I meant in regards to organization >.< You're right though. If there is no clear distinction it seems to be something that may have been over looked. I guess the only way to tell would be to make it aware to the head shed. See how long it takes to make change in these parts. Test the waters :D

I think the character place is for people who'd like to put up information about ones Sona/Character. The purpose for that can vary, but I think that's why they have it, and it does give one a opportunity as well to have information readily available for people, instead of them having to go this place for pictures and there for information on the character in more detail. Now you have it in one easy to find place.

As for tags... While I can see why it would be handy, I don't see a need for it because you're already making the tags yourself, and because of that you should remember yourself to put in gender yourself as one of the first or last tags being made.

    • Link

Yes but you don't see what I mean, right D:
I remember to tag things properly, yes.

But the 80% of other pictures on Weasyl that the others did not tag - how can they be found?
Like, if you had a picture with a male sexy dragon, but you only tagged it 'wings dragon' -- no way to find it!

      • Link

If you ever see a picture like that missing a gender tag, then I do believe you can add it yourself onto it.
As for people not putting them? Well there can be several reasons for that. But if you search for more than just Male. Then you're guaranteed unless they forget to add in a species as well, to find the picture you're looking for. I mean the more tags you put in the more limited the pictures will be.

So even if Male is missing. But you know its a Dragon and its on a Beach for instance and that tag is put in, then you've already limited the pictures by Species and setting to a very specific set. Having Gender would limit it to that one only, I get that would make it even easier. But if it doesn't have that then you're kinda lazy if you can't be bothered to look a little for the picture.

  • Link

The lack of tags is mostly people not being used to adding them. Any viewer can add the tags if they care to.

Some people use Characters as a place to put ref sheets or other character information, but it's optional.

    • Link

Or people not being used to thinking >w> </evil>

Hmmmm. Yeh, Maybe characters makes sense for commissioners or so!

  • Link

I say it's fine... at least for now.

Certainly Weasyl is still on a Beta phase...and I hope the staff takes suggestions to improve the site... because a more user-friendly interface on the control panel would definitivelly be an improvement for example.

    • Link

It is a bit confusing at first, though the same can be said for any other art site's options, I think XD

  • Link

They really do need to have some basic required tags. A search engine doesn't work without metadata. It's why I frickin go goddamn nuts on tagging.

    • Link

      A++++++ Can't agree more.
Tags make everything better. For those who wish to avoid, and for those who wish to find oddly specific content <3

      • Link

YES. AGREED @N@ We need a comment thumbs-up feature.

  • Link

not sure if anyone has stated it yet, but the character options is a good quick way for someone doing a commission to just jump right into the character section and get the quick reference they need, rather than sifting through possible hundreds of pics to get a good picture, or find the ref sheet.

Tagging isn't really Weasyl's fault, it's up to the poster to do it, and as I can tell, most people are too lazy to tag things properly, or think of other things to tag their pics with =/ I can not tell you how many times I've read that in a journal or on a pic where someone stated ow they feel that they don't need to tag their work or just that they hate tagging period because it "standardizes" their work. -_-

though I do agree that a gender filter should be added to the pics, but that would also mean that Weasyl was made specifically for porn, which it isn't. There are artists who paint scenery and nature, so the gender tag would be a nuisance to them as much as its a nuisance to us not having it. Also, some people (plenty here) don't count themselves as having a gender or are genderfluid and tend to make an uproar about it, even if they have the option of choosing that. So it's really up to the people who post pics.

    • Link

aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!! Okay that first point is the most rational argument FOR the character system I've heard yet! That makes sense, yes.

Well yeah... 'standartizing' the work is the whole point of a tag system, I am amazed that people have a grudge against that XD!

Even if you aren't doing porn, genders matter since nature just happened to make us creatures that way. Imagine you're looking for a female warrior in a forest - no way to quickly narrow it down without such a tag, right!
As for the genderfluid ones, well! :D That's no problem since then one can just tag it! genderfluid or a-gender or whatnots~ Since here they can define gender tags by themselves, they should feel less cornered like on other websites where they have to adapt to a fixed "you are either male or female!" dropdown list choice. :>

      • Link

Glad I made sense with the character thing heh heh

also, it's really common where people upload a pic with tags that make no sense, or one word tags because they don't like going through it all. I kind of understand, maybe if the tagging system allows you to re-use common tags that have been previously used by the uploader then it would make things much quicker and simpler. I've only ever seen that on sites like e621 or 20% cooler though. Not sure how to go about the process of that.

I completely agree, and I think a gender option to pics would be very useful. I just hope they understand that they need to add as many options as possible lol maybe if you asked one of the admins they could try to get it added to the site.

Hoped I helped a little, and I'm always glad to help more if needed. =3

      • Link

I also really don't get people that don't tag their stuff. Like... why wouldn't you want people to easily find your stuff when clicking through search results?! what.

        • Link

Also, anyone can suggest tags to your submissions (just tried that on your wig-shark :P)

  • Link

You sounded very new on Weasly but I'm new on Weasly I could need help on here as well

  • Link

search and pray, that's what I do, usually works pretty well

  • Link

I know the characters option is for when you have like a reference of an OC of yours or just an OC you use often. Doesn't make much sense to me either but it's just there. And I guess you can put the gender of the subjects in your art in the tags.

  • Link

I'm using the characters section for ref sheets. Not having to click through a couple of sites of regular art to find your ref sheet is kind of a pain. This way I don't have to :3

Other than that I think it pays tribute to people having multiple characters they are roleplaying with and having a ref at hand quickly for the same reason.

    • Link

Mmhmm.. So you can quickly tell them to check out your dragon before they yiffyaff you to death, giving you time to put aluminum foil onto your head :3

      • Link

For both of my heads! Even if it's just a quicky, you gotta wrap dat sticky!
