Trying to make a decision by Rob Swanson

The three or four of you that read these journals on a regular basis probably know what this is about already. A while back I quit being a furry because the idea of anthropomorphic characters had lost a lot of appeal. This ran parallel to some issues I had with the behaviors of certain people I was associating with. Most of these behaviors involved people creating drama for the sake of creating drama and a general inability to handle serious issues.

For me, being a furry was a hobby. I liked anthro characters and that was it. The community eventually became a driving force behind why I stayed around. Once I started seeing some issues that were rather difficult to ignore the whole idea of being a furry was less appealing to me. However, in the weeks sense dropping the hobby, I've come to accept that many of the problems I've had were due to the people I chose to associate with. Having cut those ties in the last few weeks, I've spent some time wondering if appreciating furry art could ever become a viable hobby again.

Having spent some time wondering about this, I've arrived at the conclusion that there are too many variables to know for sure if returning would be an enjoyable experience or not. This brings me to the purpose for this journal. This journal is a long way of saying, "I hope to have a decision by tomorrow morning on weather or not I'll be re-entering the furry fandom."

(PS, for anyone wondering if they're among the group that I had issues with; Unless I've told you to piss off in the last week or so, you're not in that group.)

I think you can still enjoy the art if you like the artist's work. I think there are many "furry" artists out there who draw other kinds of art too. I'm a multi-purpose nerd...and if I really like an artist, then I like their art. And I like to see them draw more than one thing, but I see many artists on FA complain they "can't" post non-furry art there and never show their other work either.

Yeah, you have a point there. I might have to just go a bit more multi-purpose on the art stuff.

I would try to see if they have galleries at other places, like Deviant Art or here at Weasyl. Some of them may also have their own webpages or a Tumblr art blog. :)

The only real reason I still stay at FA is that there are people there I really like and would honestly miss talking to, but they don't have (or are not active) at Weasyl and don't like e-mail. Otherwise most of FA can go away...the way some people act.

I think what Kei said is correct. And I also think that just hanging out with friends can be a hobby. Does it have to matter if they are furry or not?

    • Link

Well, the thing is that I like to treat hanging out with friends and enjoying the art as separate. One is not necessary for me to do the other. I'll hang out with people that I know from the fandom weather I'm a furry or not.

Well. I don't know what to say. But can you enjoy art regardless if it's furry or not? Like....some people who aren't furries love pictures of animals. That sort of thing. Maybe you can just browse when you want - sorta like Facebook? And otherwise just use it to keep in contact with people who can't contact you another way.

The interesting thing I am seeing is that the group of people that read these things don't care if you are a furry or not. We just like to chat with you and your hobby is really unimportant. Its no big deal if you join the fandom or not, just do what you would like to do =)
