Retail Hell: The Return of Hell by sixrabbits

Been a while since I shared one of these stories.
Actually the reason it's been so long is because very little noteworthy things have happened. Some of that is because there are certain incidents that happen over and over again, to the point that I am numb to their occurrence (like people being in the store 10 minutes after we close).

So this is a special one.
It technically caused a nightmare.

It was a slow point in a day that had been super busy. My coworker and I were just standing up there enjoying our chance to breath. While my coworker was waiting on a customer I was straightening some stuff around the register when out of the corner of my eye I see a woman reach over behind our counter and grab a pair of scissors. Now first off, our register counters have a little wall that goes around the register and partially conceals that cup that holds our supplies (pen, highlighter, scissors)- so it's not like the scissors are just laying out there for anyone to grab. Oh no, she walked almost behind the counter to grab there scissors.

Well, it clearly states in our handbook that we cannot allow customers to handle scissors because this is a safety hazard. I start walking toward the woman and say "Excuse me, ma'am, but I can't let you use our scissors."
She responded aggressively, "You don't have to be rude about it! I just need to cut out these coupons!"
"I'm sorry ma'am, but it's a safety issue."
"Well you still don't have to be rude!" she snaps and tosses the scissors on the counter and storms off into the store.
The customer my coworker was waiting on is standing their slack jawed for a moment, before she said "What the hell is her problem?"
"Some people don't like being told the rules apply to them," I shrugged.
I mean really? I don't think any tone or phrasing would have changed her response. It baffles me how entitled some people feel! Those supplies are kept partially hidden behind that little wall for a reason, because they are only for employees to use.
Now if she had asked, I might have said yes and handed her a little pair of scissors. However, when people just walk behind the counter and grab stuff like that, I will enforce the rules down to the letter. People walk behind our counter all the time like it's no big deal. We have been robbed at this store before (not when I was there), and we are told from day one not to allow people behind the counter.

The nightmare I had last night was that I was all alone up at the front and a crowd of people kept jumping over the counter. I would tell them they weren't supposed to be back there and try to lead them back around, but more would come and invade that space. Finally got angry and grabbed a woman by the arm, causing it to just pop off. Then people started yelling at me, saying I was a terrible person, I should be fired for this. I think it is mainly from a fear that one day I'm going to tell the "wrong person" that they have to follow the rules too, and they'll bitch to my manager or corporate and I'll be sacked because I did my job. I've had to defend myself in the office before, but thankfully I had coworkers witness the interaction and tell my managers that the customer is lying.

I will never, ever cease being amazed (and disgusted) by people who believe that they should be exempt from the rules just because they want to be. I'll also never cease being amazed at how people seem to want to blame the first person they see or talk to for whatever inconvenience they are encountering whether it's their fault or not.

    • Link

Yes. I'm always amazed at just how brazen some people are! This isn't the first time someone has reached back there and grabbed scissors like they were in their own home.

You have my sympathies, to be sure. I'm the Asst. Manager in a store that sells body jewelry (You know, for piercings) so I've got allllll kinds of experiences like these. It's rough, even when you know you're in the right. You get to a point where you almost know these people on sight as they seem to have striking visual and behavioral similarities. There is of course no winning, you'll always be left sitting in the crater wondering what the hell that was all about really. Your best weapons will always be polite diction. Pick your words right and you're untouchable.

    Hang in there!

      Thanks.
Yeah, I'm not sure if these people understand that they can't just do what they want with this stuff before they pay for it.
It sucks for me because I have trouble speaking, and sometimes I have a stutter (which gives some custys inspiration to call me stupid/retarded).

Man, just when I thought I was out of retail, I walked back into it for better money.
I work at a Garden Center. I feel your pain.

    • Link

I can only imagine some of the things that go on at a garden center. Unfortunately, I can imagine some pretty terrible things.

We have an all sales are final. No exchanges, no refunds policy. that uh....should give you an idea xD

We had someone yesterday come in demanding an exchange on a plant they got during our 1/2 off sale. the manager was going to let them exchange anyway but if they bought a more expensive item, they'd have to pay the difference. They raised hell threatened to call corporate and ended up stealing 4 bags of mulch while everyone was unloading truck.

        • Link

          Wow, some people.
We have a 90 day limit, but no one ever bothers to read our damn return policy and they always bitch about how they didn't see that and complain that we can't refund them the price they paid because it's been TWO YEARS since they bought the damn thing.

          • Link

why would you even try a 2 year later return? Most stores are 90 day MAX
what irked me about the whole situation is that the manager gave them three options:
Exchange for a same priced item at no cost
Exchange for a higher priced item and pay the difference
            Keep the plant.
They raised hell because one of the options wasn't a refund and they thought that the manager was being unreasonable. which he wasn't considering he was breaking corporate policy which could get him fired if he got caught.

            • Link

I was impressed they could find the receipt after 2 years. And YES, THANK YOU! We have a 90 policy for a full refund, after that you get whatever the lowest price has been, and people flip their shit.

That's extremely fair, and 100% reasonable. The person was probably just trying to get cash. We have people come in all the time to return stuff without a receipt and they want cash back (which we don't do, you only get store credit). Total scam, and they know if they yell loud enough they will get their way.

              • Link

Yeah no kidding, I can't even find mine like a day later. xD

See our manager didn't have to give them that since technically, he was breaking the rules. He just walked away. He was like nope, I'm not dealing with you stupid people, I'm going to go do my job.

                • Link

Yeah, only half my receipts make it into my folder. I once commented that I was impressed a customer still had their receipt and they got nasty with me about it.

The rules don't apply, not to special snowflakes like every other person is.

                  • Link

Yesterday i had a customer give me back an oxidized dime(you know, the green ones xD?) like 'can I get another one? I can't tell if this is real."

                    • Link

                      Oh wow.
Yesterday I practically had to follow around a woman and her six kids to clean up the destruction.

                      • Link

Eugh, we have to do that all the time at work. Plants get ripped up, knocked over, merch gets scattered.

I marvel at the stuff that happens in retail environments.

                        • Link

Yesterday a woman asked if my coworker and I had accepted Jesus.. she wouldn't let up on us.

                          • Link

                            I...
why would you ask an employee that?
I'd be like no, sorry. Practicing insert religion here
But then again I have a horrible case of smartass

I don't have many stories from this job cause I just started but with spring hitting, no doubt I'll have some xD

Still don't think any stories from here top captain obvious from my graphic design job that informed me that a printing and shipping store smelled like cardboard.

It's Texas. I really wanted to say "Sorry, I'm happy with my current spiritual provider, I'm not looking to switch." But it was just so out of the blue, it took me too long to gather that response.

                              I feel for you.

Haha! Really? Like that's a shock?

                              • Link

Ahhh Texas, I feel all of those pains too xD I'm out near Houston. Not looking forward to summer....all of our issued company shirts are long sleeve to "protect our arms".

Whats worse? We had like 7 stacks of boxes not even like 10 feet from him. Also that is an awesome comeback xD

                                • Link

That is torture! I would rather lose a finger than wear long sleeves in the summer. I almost passed out wearing long sleeves today, there's no way anyone can survive the summer in those.

Bwahahahaha! Gee where could that smell be coming from?
It's probably going to be the most clever thing I almost say to a customer all year.

                                  • Link

I roll my sleeves up unless its like below 50 and take copious amounts of water with me...on an 80 degree day I probably drink 5+ bottles of water which is about 30-ish more fl oz than my recommended water intake. I drink more on hotter days. Cold days, I drink about a liter, which is my recommended water intake. It lessens the torture.

                                    ...sorta.

                                    ahaha no clue!
                                    I'm horribly unclever most of the time. >>;
