A REAL Artist? by Trevor-Fox

Just some introspection from earlier today, and some things that bother me about myself. But I wanted to pose the question out here. What does it take to be a real artist? Do you just have to draw art? Enjoy it on some level and appreciate it? What does it take for a person to be an actual artist?

I browse around online a lot, and whlle I enjoy the stupid and silly stuff like Game Grumps and Markiplier, I also browse around for art tutorials, watching people draw, and trying overall to better my performance at art. Sometimes, my browsing takes me to forums or places where artists join up and share their works that they've done. And at those times, I will think, "It would be cool to sign up here and share my work." But I can't, or...I feel that I can't. Because everytime I visit an art forum, it's a super detailed painting of lady that's posted up, or an abstract scene meant to convey emotion, or something else similar. And I think, "Man. I just like drawing silly cartoon animals and furries in general."

So, while I don't enjoy drawing that style of art, it doesn't mean that I don't appreciate it. I really do! I understand how hard art can be, and how rewarding it is. However, I suppose it makes me feel...inadequate? My specialties really do lie in character design and art. I'm not so good with background detailing, and I prefer cartoon over realism when drawing for fun. Do these things make me less of an artist?

Ultimately, I am going to say no. They don't. There is always room for improvement, but I am a true artist, and I am doing something that I'm passionate about and love, even if it's different than other artists.

It's just those moments that make me feel inadequate with what I do.

Perhaps we need to get a bit unartsy here and get analytical. How do you define Artist? A qualified professional who works in the industry? Someone who makes money off art, or does it for a living? A philanthropic definition about contributing to a society's culture, or helping people connect or see things from a different view maybe?
I think, to answer your question, you need to sit down and think just what you feel makes an artist, and more importantly, and separate from that, what you want to achieve with your art.

As for feeling inadequate. There will always be people better than you. That does not make you useless.
There will always be people worse than you. You were probably their level once, and you will likely look back at your current work a few years from now thinking how bad your work was. It wasn't. It isn't, it's just a learning curve, and no-one will ever be on top of it.
