Follower Questionnaire by SpartaDog

WhiteMantis posted this earlier and I thought it was a really good idea, since I wonder what my watchers think of me fairly often (at least, the ones I don't talk to regularly lol). I'm also a really big sucker for comments. I get so excited when I see people commenting lol

    HI

1 - I try to comment on everything I favorite, I am a Feedback Hound.
2 - I might not say anything if I +fav a submission that seems really intensely personal (vent art, memorial art, body image stuff).
3 - Depends on what those comments are. I might avoid comment sections that are nothing but arguing or roleplaying, or people chatting about unrelated issues (e.g. "so will I see you at AC this year?").
4 - Doesn't usually make a difference, at least here on Weasyl, which I know is a secondary gallery for most people I follow.
5 - Nah, you seem chill.
6 - Hm. "Likes monsters, designs cool aliens and hybrids"? I've chatted with you in your streams a couple of times, I like you. Sometimes I have trouble telling you and battleferrets apart, heh.
7 - For encouraging more people to comment? I have no idea; let me know if you discover the secret.

    • Link

Ahah apparently a lot of people have trouble telling us apart. I'm not really sure how to fix that XD

      • Link

        Suggestions:
        1. Affect an accent.
        2. Color-code yourselves.
        3. Decide that one of you always tells the truth, the other always lies.
        4. Give up autonomy and merge into a single, two-headed monster-designing creature.

        • Link

          ....You're my favorite omg <3

      • Link

Really? I had not ever seen battleferrets work and looking at their page now, your work is MUCH better!

        • Link

Lol they meant in Stream when we have the mics on, it's hard to tell our voices apart ((But I agree my boyfriend has amazing art))

        • Link

Uhm....that's my boyfriend, and while I appreciate the compliment, I'd rather it not be at his expense

          • Link

It was just my opinion, no insult. Just I personally like your work better.

    Hello there~ ^.^

1 - What motivates you to comment on a submission?
Really it depends on the day, often I'm intimidated by my own brain into thinking that I have nothing worth while to say. When I see a skill that I personally do not have or I notice a greater amount of effort put into a piece I often comment to compliment the difference that I've noticed. Other than that I'll comment if I can relate to an artists's comment or the piece depicted, but never in the "Oh, this reminds me of something else I've seen" unless the artist says they were trying to emulate something and wants to hear that kind of thing ^.^

2 - What demotivates you to comment on a submission?
When an artist seems unfriendly, as in in harsh artist's comments like "Here's my shit.", swearing in the artist's comments tends to discourage me from commenting except if it's meant to be a conversation between two characters in the piece... It's complicated. I have anxiety so that discourages me a lot because my brain tells me I shouldn't waste an artist's valuable time. o.o' If a piece is really generic or boring I don't usually comment because it's the same thing I've seen a hundred times before. I love creativity.

3 - Are you discouraged to leave a comment if the submission already has a lot of comments?
Eh, kinda. If I see a lot of long comment chains I feel like I may be interrupting... but other than that, I get discouraged if the artist never replies to any comments. Like, if they aren't replying to me it's either because they're really busy in which case I shouldn't waste their time, or because they aren't friendly in which case why would I want to try to start a conversation with them? o.o

4 - Do you feel more inclined to leave a comment in a submission if the artist usually replies to its comments?
Yes. It makes me feel like my reaching out is being rewarded instead of ignored. Absolutely, 100 times, yes.

5 - Do you find me intimidating to approach? Why?
    Yes, because I find pretty much everyone I view as a better artist than me (which to me is practically everyone) shouldn't have to waste their time on someone like me... Eh heh heh... I'm awkward ^.^;

6 - What impressions do I give off (or, what do you assume about me)?
I think you're very creative. I love your monsters, your machines, and your humans. I think you have a lot going on both in your life and in your head. I don't quite know why but often times I feel like you're either sad or excited, like your emotions are extremes... I don't know why but that's what my brain has assumed o.o'.

7 - Any suggestions you want to give?
I really like open journals like this, where it's just... "Hey care to chat it up? Here's what's on my mind, what about yours?" It makes artists a lot more approachable because it makes it so you're easy to relate to. "Oh you think that kinda thing? So do I! I think about that all the time." It's part of why I really love HappySorry, they post journals asking how their watchers are doing and they try to reply to everyone even if it's just once over the course of a day or so. Other than that not really. You're a generally very pleasant person ^.^ Oh! But I'm strange, I'd love to see more of your headworld stuff~ =D

    • Link

      • Oh geez, I hope my casual swearing doesn't make you too nervous D: Both my parents curse a lot and not usually in an aggressive way so I sort of picked it up lol. Like, for example my mom literally collects things that say the F word and "bite me" lol

      • I may be misunderstanding but you should be careful with "this looks like [insert thing here]" comments, unless the artist was specifically trying to emulate that thing. The artist often feels like their creativity or individuality is undermined by comments like that. This seems especially true of character designers.

      • I would recommend trying to talk yourself out of #3! Especially for more popular artists, they often simply don't have time to reply to everyone, or don't know what to say. Even if they don't respond, don't feel like you're wasting their time! I've never met an artist that didn't read and appreciate every comment or note they receive. But again, there's only so much time in a day, and some of us have our own anxiety issues lol

      • I am working on responding more often so I'm glad to hear that! I try to respond with whatever the commenter gives me. I always hated getting comments back that just say "thank you", because I get excited for something more substantial and then just see that it's like "....awwww." lol

      • Hahah your assumptions are pretty correct! Depression and anxiety kind of suck so I am sad quite a bit. But when they're taking a day off I'm pretty happy! I also get really excited about things I care about like snakes and fandoms lol

      • I've been meaning to do more journals like that. I keep hesitating though because most of the things I'd open for discussion are things that could very quickly become controversial or offensive, and I'd prefer to avoid both getting upset and upsetting anyone. And I can definitely do more headworld stuff! I was actually talking about doing something more with the xiracol just yesterday lol

Thanks so much for your response!

      • Link

        1. It's just when it's like the main body of the artist's comments. Don't get me wrong, I swear like a goddamn sailor but when that's all that the artist's comment is, it's off putting.
        2. That's actually exactly what I was saying. I reread how I wrote it and it's phrased poorly. If an artist is aiming to make something look like something else and they succeeded, I tell them that. It's like if a little kid drew something and it's hard to tell what you ask "is that a cat? That's a lovely cat!" Y'know?
        3. Logical brain vs emotional. I know this, but I don't want to waste someone's time if I have nothing to add to a conversation.
        4. I have no real life so I reply to pretty much everything lol. I'm the polite person who will reply with "thank you very much! I'm glad you liked this I spent a lot of time on it! If you have any questions about it, feel free to ask! =D" It opens up chances for conversations. I get really excited about any comment, even if it's just a "thanks" because... well... Acknowledgement!
        5. Well, glad I'm not totally crazy lol ^.^' Sorry you have such a tough double whammy @.@' Depression alone is hard enough.
        6. What I do if I post a journal I'm worried will be heated is make it a point to say "this is a safe space, any flaming/ arguments will be hidden and the aggressor will be blocked from farther posts." I'm stronger behind a keyboard than in person because I know what words I need and if I can't think of it I know where to look. I look forward to seeing more Xiracol! =D

You're welcome, sorry it's particularly mopey, I was having a very bad day when I first commented. ^.^

        • Link

          • Ah okay, yeah I can see how that could be a little terrifying XD
          • Gotcha XD Glad to hear people are starting to learn about this though!
          • Trust me, I definitely understand that. However I also know the more you tell yourself something, the more you start to believe it! I'm just throwing a suggestion out there c:
          • I'm the same way about typing vs speaking. But the kind of things I meant would be like...feminism, LGBTQIA+ rights, racism, etc etc. Things that by definition will more than likely lead to arguments or controversial/downright offensive opinions. So I'd rather avoid those because, as much as those topics are important to me, my art pages are my business. If people want my opinions they can friend me on Facebook or chat with me on Skype XD I suppose I'll try to find some....less radical topics for discussion lol.
          • Link

            • Yeah, I'm easily intimidated by things like that.
            • I'm trying to tell myself positive things like "I can learn Spanish, I will learn Spanish, it'll be easy I just need to practice." But I'm easily overwhelmed by my brain @.@
            • Ah, yeah that's lighting a stick of dynamite on both ends. I'd start with something cute/silly like... What's your favorite breed of cat and why? =D

1 - What motivates you to comment on a submission?
-If I'm familiar with the artist, love the character design (say for an adopt), subject matter I relate to, art of my characters

2 - What demotivates you to comment on a submission?
-Huge number of comments, work that is more private/vent like, being afraid of being considered a creepy/ignorant commenter if talking about a person's character (Even benign comments can be taken the wrong way)

3 - Are you discouraged to leave a comment if the submission already has a lot of comments?
    -yes. It feels cluttered

4 - Do you feel more inclined to leave a comment in a submission if the artist usually replies to its comments?
-Definitely! Even if it's only a Thank you!

5 - Do you find me intimidating to approach? Why?
    -//is answering this journal post//
    ...no? Lol
Never really chatted at you before but I follow your journals pretty regularly.

6 - What impressions do I give off (or, what do you assume about me)?
-You impress me as a Jersey person. ;)
Ok maybe I saw that on your profile but still lol. Jersey peeps rock.

7 - Any suggestions you want to give?
    -Don't stop, BELIEVINGGGG
    HOLD ONTO THAT FEEEEEING

    • Link

Oh I browse mobile a LOT and that contributes to not commenting much too. If a piece has a billion comments I just find it hard to scroll forever just to leave "Great job!" on a piece. And sometimes I just het busy so I fave and dash- intending to comment later but forgetting

    • Link

      • I'm so torn on the "thank you" thing. I can see why people would appreciate it but personally comments like that annoy me. I get really excited when I see the alert and hope for a conversational comment and then I click it and just see "thank you" and it's kind of disappointing XD It's a mild annoyance but that's why I don't do it, or thank for favs/watches. The general populace seems to be divided pretty evenly on that matter. Maybe I'll take a poll sometime soon to decide whether I should start doing it or not.

      • YEAH JERSEYANS.

      • Link

I'm a bit split honestly. I didn't really explain it well being on my phone but I LOVE feedback on my comments, like sometimes all a comment needs is a thank you. For example a Great Work comment. But if ALL the replies are Thank yous it's like....what is the point. But if there's like a billion comments I get that the reply, if any, will be short and I don't take that personally. If somebody goes to the trouble of typing out a decently worded comment (and not just a great job! type) I feel that should get more than just a Thanks. There was some thought put into the comment or critique and it's polite to address it. But I understand that may not always be an option for more popular artists.

Also thanks for faves/watches are nice, but like......compound it together or something. If you fave like ten pieces and get a thank you for each fave OH MY GOSH NO. But like for a watch every now and again doesn't bother me personally. I know some people don't like it. I think a post on a front profile works for me. You're still being polite and addressing the attention without posting thank yous in every crevice of the internet lol. Everything in moderation I guess?

        • Link

Yeah. I tend to not respond to comments that just say like, "cool" or "looks good" or whatever. Not because I don't appreciate it, but because I just don't know what to say. Just saying "thank you" seems like...I dunno the word, like if I was the commenter and an artist responded with nothing but "thank you" I'd feel like they were saying it just because they think they have to. I know it's not necessarily true but -shrug-

Yeah I can understand why people leave those but I've never felt the need. Obviously it's not that I don't appreciate the fav/watch but again, it seems obligatory. And I'd rather leave comments with substance, yknow? I've considered leaving them for watches but I think there are just too many favs for thanking everyone lol

1 - What motivates you to comment on a submission?
Frequently I am too nervous to comment. If someone comes off as approachable, I comment. If they ask a question, or have a good description, I comment. I also love commenting if I know the artist will respond.
2 - What demotivates you to comment on a submission?
Coming off as unapproachable, or being a general asshat. No description. Never responding.
3 - Are you discouraged to leave a comment if the submission already has a lot of comments?
Not unless I am on mobile, which is rare. I just don't normally pay attention to what others have said.
4 - Do you feel more inclined to leave a comment in a submission if the artist usually replies to its comments?
Hell yes! I love that. Love knowing that what I said was noticed. I try not to leave general comments I try to leave something with more depth to it, focused on the image and whatnot.
5 - Do you find me intimidating to approach? Why?
No, though I did at first. I am a hella shy person. Once I got started though... You're actually really cool. You're funny, and you don't treat your followers like crap. It feels like talking to a person, rather than talking to someone who thinks the self a god. It's hella nice.
6 - What impressions do I give off (or, what do you assume about me)?
You like monsters, art. You are funny, and kind, and you are easy to get along with. You and Battleferrets care about each other. You like pibbles, obviously. Which is great! Pibbles have such an undeserved bad rep.
7 - Any suggestions you want to give?
Honestly just keep doin' what you're doin'!

    • Link

Awwww thank you so much <3 I'm glad you were able to warm up to me! I try to be open and friendly as much as possible haha.

  • Link

1 - What motivates you to comment on a submission?

Usually if the piece has enough impact on me or features a theme or subject I particularly like. Also I generally like to have two things in my comments, those being what I like about an artist's technique/execution/style or anything like that, and a second in what kind of thoughts or emotions it happens to inspire for me.

2 - What demotivates you to comment on a submission?

Laziness, primarily. Well, that's an oversimplification actually. Some days I just don't have it in me to type out a thoughtful comment that isn't a one-sentence deal, since I prefer most of my comments to have a bit of meat on them because I genuinely like interacting with artists. Also some days I really don't have the time to comment on everything, although sometimes later in that week I'll go back through favorites and post something delayed.

3 - Are you discouraged to leave a comment if the submission already has a lot of comments?

Never. I generally feel confident in my vocabulary and ability to express myself to come up with something thoughtful and unique, so I never fear feeling like I'm repeating what everyone else says.

4 - Do you feel more inclined to leave a comment in a submission if the artist usually replies to its comments?

Yes, actually. Although this is hardly the end-all and be-all reason. I comment not only so the artist knows how much I like a piece and why I like it, but also sometimes to initiate interaction with fellow artists. Hit-or-miss oftentimes, but it doesn't stop me from trying.

5 - Do you find me intimidating to approach? Why?

No. In fact, I wish I had the opportunity to talk to you more! You see like such a fascinating and interesting individual and we have a lot of similar tastes in artistic subject matter, I could talk about silly nerdery for hours. I always feel like I'm bothersome if I send notes simply to talk though, and I don't have the time nor the current home environment to attend streams.

6 - What impressions do I give off (or, what do you assume about me)?

That you wear your interests clearly on your sleeve (in regards to art) and that in the right circumstances you seem like you could be very talkative and gregarious.

7 - Any suggestions you want to give?

Nothing, really. I'm sure something brilliant will come to me once I post this initial comment though, rest assured!

    • Link

Hahah you are welcome to send me notes or Skype messages just to chit chat any time! Please, by all means, talk nerdy to me :D I definitely can be talkative when it's something I'm passionate about lol

      • Link

I may consider at some point adding you to Skype, since it's easier than using messages here haha. I usually have to be in the right kind of mindset to really talk to people, so if you do add me I'm sorry if there might be stints of silence on my end, but I'm hardly ignoring you!

  • Link

1 - I mostly comment when the artist seems approachable or if I find a piece really inspirational. This also depends if I can find the right words to convey as well.

2 - This is my own fault, but I actually do write a lot of comments, but rarely submit them. This is because I find myself rewriting my comment over and over again and not liking how it sounds, to which I just don't comment in the end. Odd, I know (literally what I'm doing now. I've rewritten this sentence countless times, haha).

3 - Not so much that there's a lot of comments, it's if someone has pointed out what I was going to say, then no, I won't comment.

4 - Yes, and no. I know some artists don't have the time to reply back (especially without sounding redundant), so it's cool. But getting a reply back is still super great 'cause they acknowledged your comment specifically.

5 - Initially, yes. However I caught one of your streams and saw how chill you were, so I am no longer.

6 - I think you're a pretty cool person, who doesn't afraid of anything (living like it's 2007, ah yeah). But in all seriousness, you seem like a very fun person!

7 - Can't really think of any at this moment! Just keep doing what you're doing! <3

    • Link

      • Glad you were able to warm up to me! This "at first yeah, but not anymore" response seems to be the general consensus lol.
      • Ahah I am definitely afraid of a lot of things. But I'm glad I can at least put up a good facade? XD And thank you! I like to think I'm fun lol
      • Link

(Also I really like your icon lol)

  • Link

1 - Whether I like it or not, artistic integrity, attention to detail, interesting poses. All manner of things but the more of these points that are hit the higher the chance I will comment.

2 - My own unending shyness.
3 - Yes because I can't be bothered to read them all and what if someone said the same thing, then I'm repititous and boring so what's the point?
    4 - Heck yeah
5 - Naw but we should talk more now that you speak on it!
6 - That you like spiderman.
    7 - Moar penis.

      5 - yes
      6 - yes
      7 - yes

      • Link

Well you're on my skype so where is you D:

        • Link

There pretty much all day every day XD Usually invis though. ANd for some reason it says we haven't exchanged information so it doesn't tell me when you're on/offline lol

  • Link

1 - What motivates you to comment on a submission?
I admit I'm not very consistent when it comes to leaving comments, I'm never sure when they'd be appreciated. But if I notice something that really jumps out at me or there is something that connects with me I like to leave a little shout out to it.

2 - What demotivates you to comment on a submission?
I suppose if something is labeled as vent art it wouldn't be very appropriate to leave a critique.

3 - Are you discouraged to leave a comment if the submission already has a lot of comments?
Sometimes I don't pay attention before I say something, so it's not really a deterrent.

4 - Do you feel more inclined to leave a comment in a submission if the artist usually replies to its comments?
Sure. I mean if I see that they answer questions or conversate it does give me a little encouragement.

5 - Do you find me intimidating to approach? Why?
Nah, you seem like a pretty easy person to talk to. At least in your streams you seem to be receptive. I am your male lesbian cop after all.

6 - What impressions do I give off (or, what do you assume about me)?
You seem like a very open minded individual, but you know what you're doing art wise. You're leaps and bounds ahead of me, so I guess I don't feel like I have much advice to offer.

7 - Any suggestions you want to give?
Uh, well keep being awesome. At least you had better, or I'll have to arrest you.

    • Link

      • Hahah well for the record, every comment is appreciated, even if I don't get around to responding right away lol
      • Yes you are. The one and only male lesbian cop. You should get a medal.
      • Oh no whatever shall I do. Do male lesbian cops read suspects different rights than non-male and/or non-lesbian cops?
      • Link

        -Duly noted, danke. :)
-Yass~ I agree with this idea entirely.
-Indeed, we have the Murranda Rights, which state that you have the right to questionable content featuring anthropomorphic animals

        • Link

Oh my god I love you. Marry me, male lesbian cop.

  • Link

1.What motivates you to comment on a submission?
It's emic in that I know my response will be appreciated by the artist.

2.What demotivates you to comment on a submission?
When the artist is an asshole...or if maybe my mind is just blank on that particular day. I try to leave comments on most art I have in my watch if it catches my attention, so artists can know they artwork was enjoyed. I hope the same from other artists.

3.Are you discouraged to leave a comment if the submission already has a lot of comments?
No, but I am more likely to leave comments on art that doesn't have any, I hate to think it was overlooked when it deserves attention.

4.Do you feel more inclined to leave a comment in a submission if the artist usually replies to its comments?
    Yes.

5.Do you find me intimidating to approach? Why?
    Not at all!

6.What impressions do I give off (or, what do you assume about me)?
You are doing really well for yourself art-wise - be proud!

7.Any suggestions you want to give?
    No.

Yay, someone who's not intimidated by me! Thanks so much for the feedback <3
