Unfollowing Patreon Users by Dmitry

Here's the deal, I'm going to unfollow anyone who requires you to pay them on Patreon to look at their work. That means you people who use giant Patreon stamps over your drawings.

This does not include per page funded comics or things like that.

This is an online gallery, that means it's free to look at. If you want to get paid for people looking at what you create, publish a book. Not even professional galleries charge people to see the work hanging there. Please, continue doing YCH's and commissions, but don't require people to pay you just to view your work.

I refuse to support those who require payments for views.

My gallery, although not amazing, will ALWAYS remain free to look at. If I wanted an income drawing porn, I would get a job doing it or work freelance, but I will not require you to pay me to see the work.

Yeah, I've never liked the website's policies, or the users who require you to "support me", to be able to view their gallery. Fortunately, people like me have u18chan, e621, and pawsru.

However, I agree with you fully. Why should I be required to pay someone, to view something, which back in the olden days would be free to see? It's self sabotage at it's finest.

I think if I like an artist enough, I would gladly support them on patreon to see them continue to make work, but I'll never know if they are any good if there is a huge stamp over everything.

Patreon will catch on eventually anyway. They don't allow pornographic material, so it's just a matter of time before everyone gets shut down.

    Artists got to eat, too.

I know, I'm one of them. I've got a degree in art and everything and I still think it's unprofessional and wrong to charge people to view your work on a free site. Like I said, if you want to make money, go freelance and do commissions or funded comics or YCH's. Just don't charge everyone to view the final product.

Artists got to eat indeed. It's just that charging to view your work isn't a great way to put money in your wallet at all, you're just driving off potential customers that want to hire you or purchase goods from you. I wouldn't want to be labeled as that one greedy person that forces people to pay in order to "see" their art.

I would commission an artist, but I honestly wouldn't pay to see their work unless it was printed in a nice book.

It's like if you went to look at a store for something and, suddenly, the clerk goes like "hey man, you gotta pay to look, yanno". You'll probably say "Yeeeeeah. No. I'll just go somewhere else".

Want money? Offer goods and services. Not a "pay to see" fee. It'll be damaging in the long run.

I hate that too. With me, it really just comes down to not wanting to be advertised at when trying to look at art. Weasyl and FA are meant to showcase your work, not as a gateway to an external payment service. I understand that artists need to make money but throwing ads at me all the time to view their work in a setting like this just turns me off of following them. I think artists should have the right to do it, but they shouldn't be surprised if I don't want to follow them due to it.

It's just silly to stick a stamp over a picture too. It'd be smarter and turn off less people if they linked their art on Patreon first. Then, post it on FA/Weasyl later while stressing that if people follow their Patreon, they can view the work early. People who care that much to look at the art would be fine paying for it then and it wouldn't upset the normal users who just want to view art. Plus, it seems like they're turning off potential commissioners by stamping all their work. I mean, if it's actually working out for artists to do that, whatever, more power to them. I just won't be following them then.

I don't even mind the early access patreon. I just don't like the perpetual stamp over the genitals of every drawing. And yes, they can make money anyway they see fit, but, like you, I won't be following them.
