i just want to say by ali

i'm relieved the weasyl staff admitted what they did wrong and in the end made the best possible choice to please everyone, by following their own rules.. for those of you leaving, just remember weasyl is the lesser of many evils and the staff actually care and make progress and show they mean business. 8(

ppl posting many i'm leaving journals make me sad, while they also run over to tumblr where the tumblr staff defended/protected the kkk and also deleted and censored ferguson stuff due to their affiliation

which is gross and if you don't think that's bad i don't see why anyone would have to condemn weasyl in comparison

i just want to say

A few people may be looking for that perfect place that doesn't exist. The most you can hope for is a fairly rational team that tries their best to uphold their values, while still supporting the users to the best of their ability. No matter where you go there will be issues and disputes. You will disagree with something along the line. It is impossible to avoid. As long as the staff is trying to work with their user base and listen to their needs I'm all for it.

    • Link

basically this- ironically though, the tumblr staff refuses so i'm still wondering why they think tumblr is better??? because silencing a situation that's getting people hurt and killed totally isn't bad nahhh..

      • Link

Beause the staff over at tumblr doesnt interact with the users too often, at least personally. I frequent the place, gotta have my food porn and recipes, and this is the first time Ive heard bout this ferguson censorship and kkk stuff. The people running there I wanna say would rather have the mob mentality than go through the information and make proper opinions about the situation.

People will protect anything that suits their taste...

    It's all a trend game

    • Link

      god seriously

  • Link

Soo... What did I miss and why is people leaving over it?

    • Link

it's a long story but basically someone posted an outing journal about their rapist, weasyl had them take links out, people called weasyl staff rape defenders and one of the members leaked irc logs of weasyl staff understandably venting about being called that! they were basically stuck between a rock and a hard place

weasyl is known for letting people bash fa all they want like subtly making hate journals about fa on weasyl but they're changing that now so it's less hypocritical and it's just a huge mess but the people immediately flocking over to tumblr are making me laugh and also mad because of what i just stated in the journal, that if they think weasyl is bad, tumblr is worse, and why would they support it? it's picking and choosing what to be offended over i guess

Everyone's just jumpy now since FA was so terrible at managing everything ever-- everyone's just looking for any and every excuse to jump ship randomly now. :T

They've already long forgotten this was dealt with 210% better than how that other site is known for dealing with things.

It's beyond me how people like this haven't just straight up LEFT the internet all together with being so trigger-y.

    fuckin' bless.

like, i use tumblr- it's a good social platform, but the safety and community and the staff... well, they don't even compare to weasyl. weasyl showed so much transparency and fessed up that what they did was shit. no matter what in a situation like this, they were gonna look like the bad guys. it's a serious issue and it's very hot-button, so to speak.

i feel safe on this website- the weasyl staff have gone out of their way to do incredibly nice and helpful stuff for me, and I don't remember a time where admins did that without me asking for help or pointing out their own terms/rules. Weasyl has done it more than once already and has taken responsibility for their actions- which FA, tumblr, and other websites have rarely, if ever, done.

so i don't agree with the people leaving; but i'll let them. they're welcome to do so if they feel uncomfortable, but as a survivor of similar situations myself, i side with the staff. what else could they do? besides, they're human. they're prone to error. like... people seem to forget that, a lot. there are some sites where the staff just prove to be utter shit ALL THE TIME and won't do a damn thing to change, but good staff like weasyl can and will make mistakes like anyone else would.

    • Link

Just chiming in to say all of this ^ is how I'm feeling abt the whole situation tbh.

    • Link

yep. this, all this. well said!

  • Link

Thiissss 8T While I'm not 100% on some of the stuff said in the apology, I'm at least very happy that staff is being transparent. (Now, uh, tumblr is v. concerning and I can't wait for Inkstand to open up.)

  • Link

i was so angry and frustrated and honestly disgusted by how the staff had handled the issue and how they spoke about the serious subject in that leaked chat(which i understand venting, but wow no excuses on some of the things said so cynically and sarcastically), but i was honestly pleased by how the handled correcting themselves and apologizing. because you don't see that in many places(if anywhere these days, let's be honest here); staff who recognize they did wrong and actually speak publicly about it. /coughfacough

so good on them for taking active steps in improving how they handle things. because of that, though i'm still very irritated, i'm not gonna jump the fuckin' gun because, well... where else can an artist go? :/ weasyl is legit the lesser of many evils here and is overall the best choice to go to and stay a part of when it comes right down to it. so i'll be staying and attempting to get back active here.

i am glad to see some of my favorite/watched artists still stay as well. and show that they have common sense and patience rather than saying they're leaving and going to fa and tumblr which just... ok you have fun with that, those places are much more fair and safe. yeah.

How the staff handled the situation makes me love this place even more.

  • Link

    This. Just, all of this.

I'll never understand why furries need art site admins to be their elder sages, spiritual leaders, moral arbiters, and guardians and enforcers. Anyone leaving over this event is going to be just as outraged and disappointed wherever else they go, because their expectations are seriously warped.

  • Link

I posted a rather lengthy journal about this. The sums of it is, I agree. And I honestly feel people freaking out about it aren't thinking very clearly. I mean the hurling insults as they leabe ones. I can't blame those who are simply put off and leaving in a more calm fashion

  • Link

Thanks for this, I was getting kinda depressed seeing all the "I'm leaving" journals. I'm glad they want to try and keep a standard without exceptions and on top of that callouts are a really difficult issue. I used to help run a callout blog but it's just...it's shitty, people jump down each other's throats, and the call-outers (whistle blowers?) get harassed on no end. like it'd be awesome if a rapist could be held accountable for their actions but only if it meant the victim wasn't going to get dogpiled on. that's why i agree with their decision to restrict all callouts.

altho i do agree the comments they made about it were insensitive. i think with the chat leak they're gonna definitely make an effort to be more professional when discussing moderation issues.

unfortunately one thing that people seem to forget is that we're allowed to have our reactions to things, to whatever degree we naturally have them.

there are two parts to this: how the staff reacts and how the community reacts. the staff could have done better in their reactions (with some members having some very terrible attitudes that i hope will be immediately and exceedingly addressed), but they could have done a lot worse, if nothing at all.

in the grand scheme of things we're living in societies that are steeped in victim blaming, and a lot of the community responses to this have done more than enough to illustrate how quickly the user was thrown under the bus and whose claims/actions were immediately cast in doubt and shame.

so if there's anything to be learned from how similar incidents like this take place, it's watching your own reaction to these things and trying to sift through and discuss it without punching down at anyone else in the process.
