Help: Eyestrain? Also, impromtu day off. by thatlittlegoblin

I've been tested and I do not have allergies so it's not that but

my eyes have been really dry lately and red/irritated. To the point where I'm falling behind in my work because it hurts to look at the screen for long.

I'm thinking it's some combination of eyestrain and just general dryness, but does anybody have any advice or tips as for what I can do to prevent this from happening? It's pretty awful.

Oh, I am getting some eyedrops to use as well. I was just wondering if any of y'all have had a similar issues and know how to deal with it accordingly. I'd love some advice!

Stare at different things and take breaks, really is all I'd know? and make sure your screen isn't too bright or causing glare.

I recently moved my desk to prevent glare and it helped a bit. I live in a tiny 1br apartment so space is sort of limited- not a whole lot of options in the whole setup department haha.

Seriously considering just painting a giant fucking abstract to hang the wall opposite me so I have something interesting to look at besides blank walls!

Posters or other things to decorate the walls is probably a good option. Sleep is also good, are you doing that?

I sometimes to have this sort of problem. Eyes tend to cry on their own and become irritating\red (most happens if i'm overthinking\stressed or worked up). A simple solution is to try to relax\rest your eyes and let the mind pretty chill, i guess.

    Otherwise go with eyewash.

My eyes haven't been really watery though! I'm drinking plenty of water, but dry irritated as fuck eyes plague me.

Cam's picking up the brand my optometrist told me to get for dry eyes tonight.

Adding a humidifier couldn't hurt. You may want to double check your monitor/chair angles... normally you should be looking slightly down at the 'center' of the screen, if you're looking up it makes it worse.

A humidifier would help? I've been meaning to get one as a gift for Cam cause he gets nosebleeds in dry weather.

Definitely. I'd say grab one of the big paper and plastic filter kind, the ultra-sonics and steam ones misbehave if you have hard water. Plus, you can run the paper and plastic mesh filters though the dish washer to clean them. Not more than 4-5 times or so, but it helps cut down on replacing them.

These are okay, a little noisy though: http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-HCM-890B-Humidifier-black/dp/B003D95U0A/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1416370479&sr=8-6&keywords=humidifier

If you live in a dry area it'll empty in 12-24 hours... you'd need a bigger version if you want to refill it every other day or longer.

Nah I live in near Atlanta, GA. It's usually humid, the air in my apartment is just dry I think haha

          • Link

If you're using the A/C that can dry the air out. Same thing when it gets super cold outside.

Apparently, there are some kind of glasses that'll reduce eyestrain from looking at a screen for too long. Gunnars. Not sure if you can actually get them cut to act like actual glasses, though. Maybe look into that? Unfortunately, they're not cheap or anything.

I have an anti-glare coating on my lenses but all it does is reduce the amount of glare and not really prevent eye strain or anything. Shoulda gotten UV protection instead.

Do you have a heater in the room you're working in? I've noticed that my eyes get dry and almost burned if the heat is radiating on them, even if it's not all that warm.

I do, but it's under my desk and not on for very long (specifically, I use it for 5mins out of every 30 to keep my feet warm and that's it.) because it makes the air really dry and causes my nose to bleed.
