so what was it that made this site better than FA again (2.0) by Manna

So my last journal was deleted because I in passing mentioned someone's name, and totally not because I was criticizing this website for its shitty administration

To review the points I made:

  • The forums have weekly threads devoted to hating on marginalized people. Last week was all about the mentally ill and how shitty they are (someone even said "I'd respect someone more if they weren't mentally ill" like literal wording), this week we had a thread about how terrible women are for not wanting to be bullied out of STEM fields

  • Usually what I do is just report any post that has blatant bigotry in it. Generally racism, ableism and transphobia because I don't have enough time in my day to report every instance of sexism on the forums it's that insidious

  • Without warning I was banned for "abusing the report function", because I had insulted some of the users when I referred to them as "sexist"

  • I have been told multiple times since by admins and a few others that I've been "too aggressive" and that's why I was banned, which of course ignores how tremendously more aggressive misogyny is in general but whatever they're just pulling excuses out of their asses

  • I came to the conclusion that because most of the admins actually benefit from sexism, transphobia, racism and ableism, then they must be too invested in those constructs to care about making Weasyl an inclusive website

  • a few people who don't even follow me (an admin being one of them) came to my page so they could start shit, trolled through my gallery and then noticed this journal

Like idk what they thought deleting the first journal was going to accomplish, they're not going to shut me up lmao

so what was it that made this site better than FA again (2.0)

A lot of people came to my page on here a month ago and harassed me for the sole reason I didn't do furry art, I reported it, and no one did shit.

    • Link

Weasyl is kind of... Slwoly turning into DeviantART. And it's awful.

    • Link

      wait what

people legit sent you hate because you don't draw furry art?

      holy shit that's fucked up

      • Link

        Ikr
I was immensely pisses that there were users alive and existing that had such high levels of immaturity.

  • Link

yeah on the surface this site seems ok then you dig and look around and whoops there it is
there's really no good site out there every website is just fresh soil for seeds of hate

  • Link

When I saw your original post was gone, I was seriously hoping it wasn't because admins had deleted it. That's very disappointing. I have seen other online communities trying to silence criticism of sexism in their midst, and they just went downhill after that.

  • Link

    good golly miss molly D:

  • Link

casually waits until you're legit permabanned for pointing out exactly how fucking shitty this website is.

  • Link

Ugh. So between this and the well known shit that is FA's awful history with similar things... is there a "better" site? Do you know of any/have any to recommend?

    • Link

honestly haven't heard a lot about tumblr staff being shitty but I wouldn't recommend tumblr just because it's not easy to have like an organized gallery

Ben, the dude who made this site and was promptly mutinied off the staff, has plans on making another art site which I'm going to migrate to probably when he gets around to it

      • Link

        Workin' on it.

      • Link

Yeah, my tumblr is a catch-all for social justice stuff, art, fandom junk, etc. I've considered making an art-specific one, but it seems so disorganized... one of the reasons I liked weasyl.
I hope he does so, I'd absolutely be down if it means less transphobia, racism, ableism, etc. to deal with. I don't even go on the forums... I need absolutely no more stress about those topics in my life.

Here's hoping that other site pans out. I see he's workin' on it. I'll be keeping an eye open!

  • Link

It's like... Everything the fandom touches turns to shit!

    Weird.

  • Link

mmm, ask yourself why you started using Weasyl. If you believe Weasyl was going to always be a specific demographic like Tumblr then you were sadly mistaken.

Regarding the wide array of -isms (ableism, sexism, transphobia, racism, etc), many people are very accepting. However people also have a line. The line is drawn usually at extremist behavior like what people see on Tumblr, why do you think InternetAristocrat came around and started to call out the bullshit happening on all corners of Tumblr and the Internet?

I'm a person who doesn't waste time playing keyboard commando reporting meaningless, empty, childish and posts probably left by those who are young. If you want to make a difference, don't focus on internet bullshit like on Weasyl, get involved locally and nationally with groups to help change your community and the national community.

Believe me, I understand your frustration, but your focus is quite misdirected.

    • Link

If Internet Aristocrat is your example of a valuable opinion on social issues, then I feel sorry for you. Lol

      • Link

Regardless of how he explains his opinions, he's still right on many topics. Though like any politically charged topic it's not black and white.

        • Link

I feel sorry for you, lol

          • Link

You're a very anti-social individual. The statements you've made are negative without explanation. If you knew anything about IA or any of his past vlogs, you'd know better.

            • Link

Is that why he deleted everything? Cool story bro. Keep trolling Lulz for random peoples' journals to shit on. B)

              • Link

the DFE is standard for him. He goes on for like... 3 months before creating a new name and moving on to a new topic. Mostly has to do with gaming like game reviews. I've not seen him on internet drama before though.

              • Link

wait was this journal posted on lulz is that why it got so much attention suddenly a few days ago

                • Link

Yep, ha ha. The nerds are always watching

                  • Link

you know I'd be fine with them watching if it meant they learned something but oh well

            • Link

              That's not what anti-social means

              • Link

It's quite anti-social to be hostile without explanation. I try to be very outspoken, unfortunately there are those who will conglomerate with a group only to target anyone who doesn't agree with their opinion, which is very anti-social when you can't communicate with others who don't hold your view.

    • Link

why do people keep telling me to leave the house if I want my life to be better I'm fucking disabled lmao

      • Link

huh? You don't need to leave your house to be involved with community groups. All I'm saying is reporting and complaining about inappropriate statements on the butthole of the internet isn't a way to make change. What makes change is getting involved in groups and volunteering to take on tasks which bring education and change. Far as "What can I do?" Many groups need people to help campaign, this can be work performed from home, helping write articles, envelope stuffing, etc ,etc.

        • Link

or I could not get shunted off the internet lmao. There shouldn't be anything wrong with me trying to create a safe space for myself online. I don't care if you think "it's not a real change", it's important for me to be able to go online without dealing w/ harassment constantly

          • Link

Nobody is trying to shunt you off the Internet. While the furry fandom is a means of escapism from real life for what ever reason a person may have, it's not an environment I would recommend to anyone. I don't think it's not real change, I know it's not real change. There's a big difference when you're contributing to what's basically an imageboard where threads are forgotten vs changing the views of those around you.

Do your actions educate people on why their statements may be bad? Probably not if all you're doing is reporting them to the admins where the result is a journal/forum entry/etc removal. This is why I said you're not changing anything, because you aren't. What you've done as a result is quite the opposite, you've polarized a person by irritating/harassing/or shocked them at getting their statement removed, where the result will be they're be an extra level asshole higher than they were before when discussing said topic.

            • Link

I think you might want to live a day in my shoes if you want to claim nobody is trying to shunt me off the internet lmao. P. much wherever I go there's an incessant group of dickheads (some of them even follow me, as was the case w/ FAF to Weasyl forums) who go out of their way to be shitty towards me

The admins have never removed statements that I've reported. They hardly ever close threads because of reports and to my knowledge they've never issued warnings over them either. That's why I always publicly call out problematic behaviour. That's why I was warned the first two times (can't recall the first, but the second time was for me pointing out that people were being ableist in the "I hate mentally ill people" thread the journal mentioned), and then I was banned earlier this month for it too in a thread about how women are so terrible for wanting access to STEM fields (I can't make this shit up lmao)

Regardless tho, even if I did "only report" sexism / ableism whatever how the hell would that make me more of an asshole than the bigoted people being reported. Disenfranchising already marginalized people is loads more harmful than refusing to educate people who aren't my responsibility lmao

              • Link

Well, I'm certainly interested in what you have to go through day to day. Just make sure when you're calling them out, you're doing so in a polite manner even if you have to bit your tongue. My roots are mestizo spanish, I've never considered myself "white" and have to always deal with racism and intolerance. It's best to always win people over than solidify their racism. As you may have heard, "you can catch more flies with honey" This is often the case in feminism and other areas as you may have experience with in the past. What solidifies people's view is when someone is hostile instead of nice, all you need to do is wear people down with being polite and others will be supportive of your views/cause/stance and view the person making the lewd comments as an asshole.

                • Link

I've tried being nice, my tone isn't the problem

They need to respect me as a human being before they can take anything from what I say, regardless of how I say it

                  • Link

If you wouldn't mind, would you happen to have links to forum threads where this is occurring? I'd like to take the time to read what you're going through.

                    • Link

I was banned on weasyl forums so I can't link you to any threads there, or copy paste the private messages I've received

If you want to have a feel for what the online experience is like for a trans person why not make a fake profile on Okay cupid. It'll have to be binary trans b/c they don't have options for other gender expressions

use a picture of hillary duff or something and make it very clear on your profile that you're "assigned male at birth" (amab for short)

                      have fun

                      • Link

This will be a rather interesting experiment. I did pretend to be a female years ago, it was rather interesting to see responses from men.

If they could just have cub art be opt-in and hidden by default, kind of like Hentai-Foundry's system, I think Inkbunny would be a great place to go to. It's the most stable and has the most features. I can't remember anything specific besides them being adamant about supporting cub art that made people leave that place.

Right now it's teeming with the creepiest pervos I've ever seen, but still more active than here. The admins here seem more like the admin's friends than anything. Tumblr would be great, but the moderators there just arbitrarily take down artwork for a litany of reasons; I've been banned probably 4 times before I just gave up.

    • Link

yeah like inkbunny really suffered kind of indirectly from allowing cub haha

like the market for furry art sites is FA, Weasyl, IB and e621 basically. Because FA is the most dominant in the market it sort of defines the standard, and you go to the alternatives because they fulfill a certain niche. A huge amount of the attention Weasyl got is because it cropped up just as the shit with (the admitted rapist whose name I'm not allowed to say) happened, so as a result weasyl just sort of became defined as "the art site without rapists on staff" and that's why the main demographic here is more into social justice than the other furry sites (like literally every artist here has a tumblr linked on their page haha)

Inkbunny had sort of a similar situation, where a bunch of people migrated from FA to it because of the ban on cub porn. This sort of cemented that site as a "bastion of pedophilia" so the kind of people who want to go there are the kind of people who think that's a great place to be. Like you said, some of the creepiest pervos haha

It's interesting to compare IB to e621, because they both allow cub porn and IIRC inkbunny never came out and said "hey leave FA and come to us because we allow cub", it's just one site got labeled as the "cub" site and the other didn't, and there's a noticeable difference in their communities because of it

      • Link

E621 is like all the creepy content of Inkbunny, with the backwater community of SoFurry. Not viable at all, ha ha. Inkbunny had a good couple months when it first started up where everybody and their mother was moving from FA and making accounts. Wasn't there some kind of little thing where an FA admin retaliated against Inkbunny admins or users? I remember something along those lines.

But then more and more people got tired of the cub art and went to Tumblr, which was also pretty new back then. I personally don't have a problem with that kind of stuff, most of it is super creepy, but if IB wants to be anything besides "The Pedo Furaffinity", then they need to do something to court users back. The FA2IB tool is really helpful, but not enough. Weasyl not only isn't active, it isn't really compelling.
