Commission concerns by ayvee

I'm fortunate enough to be in a position where I don't have to take commissions for my livelihood, and frankly there's a lot about the idea of doing so that I find unpalatable.

And yet.

I recently had to do some design work for somebody I know, and it's the first strictly deadlined "job" I've had since graduating. And that has me thinking that it may be nice to get some kind of structure back in my routine, which in turn has me considering adopting a really light and really casual commission schedule. But there are reasons I've never tried to do commissions before, so it's not something I approach lightly. My concerns are:

Quality
I'm really inconsistent as an artist. I don't have a dedicated working method, and I'm much better at working with figures than scenery. I'm not sure I'm up to whatever people are going to be asking of me, I don't really feel like I can guarantee a good or even consistent product in all cases, and I feel like that's kind of important if you're getting paid for your work.

Patience
Haha okay. Furries, I love you. But sometimes, I mean no offense, but sometimes you're ridiculous. I used to take open requests, but I'm really just not that interested in drawing everyone's rainbow furred muscletaur with detachable custom penises who is also an assassin or w/e. I guess I could just decline commissions that I don't find appealing, but unless I'm getting a truckload of them, and I highly doubt I'm going to be getting a truckload of them, I don't expect I'll have that luxury.

Time
This one is practical. I currently live with my parents. My conservative, overbearing parents. I have to be a stealth artist, and it's draining when I can manage it, and I frequently can't. It can take me weeks to even get started on an idea that I have, because I just don't have any privacy or free time or whatever. I can probably mostly work around this, but it's going to be a huge source of frustration.

Licensing
NOW HERE'S THE REAL POINT OF CONTENTION. I'm very much a fandom artist. Or rule 34 artist, if you will. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that most of my watchers are here because of fandom work, probably Star Fox in particular. But if I take commissions, I will not be doing anything with fandom characters. Yes, I know that plenty of other artists do it and get away with it, I don't care. This is my line in the sand. If you have an original character based on a species or something from a fandom, that's more of a grey area (even if it's like an anthro pokemon or digimon or something), but otherwise it's not going to happen. I suspect that's going to drop a lot of potential interest.

Interest
Speaking of. This is probably the most important one, and the main reason for this journal. I want to see if there's even any interest in getting commissions from me. I haven't worked out pricing or anything yet, but I'm considering something like $40-$60 (USD) for full illustrations, with adjustments for characters, or complicated background/design requests. I'm not sure about offering sketches because I'm really just not a very good sketch artist. Also I like to do closeups and stuff like extreme perspectives/PoV shots, but those tend to be a lot less work than an illustration featuring two full figures, so that kind of composition may be less expensive. Idk it's complicated. And still very much in the formative stages.

That's basically everything I guess. Feedback would be very much appreciated.

    * snicker *
    Sometimes I just stare at an image while silently shaking my head.
