HELLO SUDDENLY INFLUX OF ACTIVITY
PLEASE STAY! Make Weasyl your furry home!
Stop going back to FA, they just keep letting you down (like their servers - ohh snap)
Or at least just start using the site regularly. No really guys, its a super good idea to build some watchers on other sites....
Especially if you, you know are dependent on commissions.
I kinda am too. It may inconvenience some people at first, but then they can just mosey on over to this wonderful place. :>
I don't know if I'd go that far. I don't like how the site is run and it is backwards and lazy, but I still have lots of friends there who read what I write. Its not much but its something. I don't have an audience here, bar one person, and I feel like my writing is largely ignored.
And I would like people to read what I've done. Not for fame or status, but because I like it when people help me with my writing, pointing out mistakes and suggesting improvements. And I admit these writing projects are important to me and some feedback is better than none :o
I kinda left FA after the site made me uncomfy with how the people behind it handle personal or site relations. That said I'd be glad if this place got more lively!
Normally I'd say something like "social issues aside" but no, that site is horrendously against my politics and I am so proud of amazing artists like you boycotting it.
Plus it is literal trash. It's like taking all of your nice art work, throwing it in a garbage bag, and then asking someone to see if they can reach into the bag with a blindfold on and somehow find what they're searching for.
The main thing that prevents me from staying at this site is well um... the freaking thumbnail system, I love looking for new artists and having a clear preview of what I'm about to see. I have it a lot easier to see a compacted image of the entire image since I check the colours and general body poses or backgrounds to see if something will catch my attention more or not, having this forced small square things and so many people using a zoom on someone's hand or face and no way to turn those types of manually done thumbnails one just, puts me off. How am I going to properly enjoy an art site if I can't freaking browse art comfortably?
If they only made you choose between automated thumbnails of the full image or the ones artists made manually, that would change my experience of this site drastically for the better.
I've been on weasyl for a while and have been submitting, but I have like, BARELY any watchers here, and no watchers means no commissions, so unfortunately FA will remain my main site Weasyl has the same watcher base as I have on FA.
Plus I just recently got a contact changing the majority of my work to Moderate when I feel they should have been left in General, due to "implied death", when I do not view them as implying such. The guidelines are vague and heavily left up to interpretation, and while I expressed this and they said that they would review and (hopefully) update the guidelines, but seeing as I do not agree about the level of violence they believe is implied... I just feel uncomfortable about the whole situation.
Welcome to how i felt before i removed my submissions (the watcher thing).
And yeah, been hearing about people having issues with guidelines as well.
I'm talking to the mod about it - the reasons they're bringing up just don't line up in my eyes. For example, they say it's because the prey character (I am vore artist) looks scared, so that implies death. But there are some submissions where they prey looks scared that they changed to Moderate, and some that they didn't. As well, as a vore artist, I often see prey depicted in realistic insides... but being completely unharmed. The realism of the guts was the other reason they claimed to be flagging things, because they say the realism implies death.
But as I said, if the guidelines aren't straightened out in a way that's easy to follow, I'll probably leave. It also kind of makes me feel uncomfortable when I view the majority of vore to be innocent and MILD violence at best (because that's how the artists and fans of vore treat it)... but they think it implies death. It's like they're putting malicious intent into my pieces when there was none there, and I mean, what artist wouldn't be uncomfortable with that?
i literally only use FA for commissions because i need the money. the site is terrible, the admins are terrible, weasyl is beautiful and useful and innovative and user friendly and the admins are lovely.
What you should say is that people should spread out their work across multiple sites, I've been seeing the complaints about the FA DDoS attack and how they've lost their income because of it. Guy on tumblr named Kiku otter pretty much said: Hey, don't stick with one site only, it'll fuck you up. Use anything and everything at your disposal.
And those people who weren't smart got fucked up. I agree that people should try to ween themselves off of FA and stop supporting it, they should not stick to one site at a time, you never know what's going to happen.
Um, you don't quite get it? It's not about not being "smart" enough (which is pretty insulting). But a lot of those artist that use FA as a source of income do use various other sites, the thing is, FA has by far the biggest amount of people waiting and looking to buy commissions.
The friends I have that are having trouble due to this also have weasyl and deviant art accounts, and well, they don't get even half the amount of commissions between those 2 sites combined than they do on FA.
I do understand, I left FA along with 500 followers, if I wasn't being paid by other companies to draw concept art, I'd be in a pickle. However you miss the point entirely in that if you rely solely on one website for all your revenue, for all of your info and contacts, you're going to get burned if the worst happens, and the worst has happened!
Furaffinity is not a safe place, that's why I left, the site has been proven to be quite vulnerable to DDoS attacks that can last for weeks at a time, private information over notes can be leaked, and with how the staff handles these things: another DDoS is guaranteed to happen. If you feel it's insulting for me to say it's not smart to stick to one site, then so be it. I've got no sympathy for those who put their eggs in one basket, and then get upset at others when it's gone.
"The friends I have that are having trouble due to this also have weasyl and deviant art accounts, and well, they don't get even half the amount of commissions between those 2 sites combined than they do on FA."
You didn't say "it's not smart to do X" you said "those who weren't smart enough" which can be interpreted as "they are dumb or not very intelligent". Second how can you miss that freaking paragraph? The people that I talk about when they really need commissions they go back to FA because their preferred art site has way less people wanting to commissions artists. They dind't "put all their eggs in a basket", they use multiple sites and in many cases have others as their main, but they still need FA when they need money more urgently since that's where most commissioners are.
oh man, it actually makes me happy seeing so many comments on here.
but yeah, i'm definitely staying. I gave up on FA a long while ago. :I
Tumblr, Twitter, and Weasyl are my main hubs at this point.
But people really should start spreading themselves. Especially those with a business to offer, because lumping it all on one site that is known to regularly crash and go down is...idek. Stupid? Unbelievably stupid?
I think this can help explain a bit (and explain the flooding of her comic too XD; ) https://www.weasyl.com/journal/66483/fa-v-weasyl
It's basically a business standpoint, and even i've noticed this as a person who enjoys feedback. Unless you're well known on this site, your chances of actually getting that kind of feedback/business are minimal at best. That would also hurt the artists income as well, and have them less likely to leave FA.
Besides, some users are aware of the attitudes towards FA on this site and avoid it, which is one reason why some of their business does not come here.
Weasyl is not a bad site, but there are some things i can certainly see that could be useful. As Foxena put it, having adspace would be tremendous help. Better browsing to boot too, because searching everything on the site as they are posted instead of categorizing it better seems...impractical. makes it harder for people to look for artists they like or may enjoy because of these things. It's not perfect (hell, FA isn't, yet it functions), but these things could help weasyl a bit.
Currently, i consider it a backup because as of now, I get more activity on FA than weasyl and DA combined. That may change, but until then, i don't really expect much atm.
I wasn't saying to just leave FA. I'm very well aware that it's a major hub and the best place for business.
I was only saying people should spread their business. So it's not isolated solely on FA, especially during a time when the site does go down (as it often does), business doesn't get hurt (as bad).
It just really isn't a good idea to solely invest your business on a site that does go down often, unless you've set up a means for people to get into contact with you outside of the site.
