Finally, a retrospective of the work of William Mortensen. Mortensen was arguably the last and greatest artist of the pictorialist movement in photography. Ansel Adams called him ‘the antichrist’.
I ran across Mortensen’s photography many years ago, quite by accident. I had found a book called ‘Pictorial Lighting’ by Mortensen. The book was slim. It was filled with highly practical and stunningly simple advice. The example photographs were mesmerizing. I knew that those were the kind of photographs I wanted to make.
