is there some way to connect to registered friends? i thought it was only local wireless play? i have the game buT IM SO bad at understanding this

When you start the game hit the "Online" option, its the round orange one. Once it's connected to the server you get four options, the first of which is "With Friends".
Thats the one you want for playing with people on your friendlist ; )-
