An Update by Zenuel

Alright.

I'm a day late for the update I said there would be; whoops. :T
It's been a little bit since I made any noise in regards to everyone's donations as well as my activities with my music and what have you. I've been working diligently on In Between (The Vita game you graciously donated for) and I've got an enormous amount of work both done; and ahead of me. However before I get into the nitty-gritty let's start with something short and sweet:

I worked really hard all month on a crappy non-game for NESJam. You can play it, it's free http://zenuel.itch.io/comfy-coffin
I participated in NESJam in an effort to learn more about coding and general old-school game development; when I was working on Starbound I wasn't terribly behind the scenes, I was all assets. NESJam gave me the chance to work on something isolated with a strict set of rules and deadline to keep to; I feel like I could have done much better, however it still let me learn quite a lot.

In the coming months I'm going to devote myself to revamping In Between and presenting some gameplay footage for everyone to enjoy; something more tangible than a crappy jam game I made. Speaking of..

Other gigantic news is still half-formed in my mind but I'm going to present it for your thoughts and possible consideration.
I now have a Patreon! :D
http://www.patreon.com/Zenuel
Through Patreon I'm hoping to present all of the work that I currently have hiding away, to everyone who wants to help support said work; I'll be posting entire OST's and Games- as I create them to Patreon in hopes that it will provide everyone with more concrete updates from me; as a lot of what I do is harder for me to properly release to places like FA, Weasyl, Tumblr, etc.. Patreon will also allow me to devote everything to my work and give me room to release things as they are finished as opposed to hiding them away waiting to drop them with big releases, as well as show off some unfinished work, get your feedback right away and create together with you on the occasional livestream.

It also lets me comfortably give you folks free stuff, because marketing just feels gross and I want to share my work with you as honestly as I can. Now obviously I'll still be posting here; however I'm sure you've noticed the heavy slow down in my work and updates as a whole as my work is currently all being done behind closed doors. Patreon will thankfully let me open said doors, and you're all welcome to come in and give me your thoughts, and help shape the music and Games you want to see from me.

All in all things are going magnificently and I'm pleased to say I now have a much better means of communication with everyone and I'm really excited to share what I have so far with you, because I'm positive you'll like it.
Thank you so much for your time, I'll be posting some teasers for my Patreon here in a little bit so stand by for those. <3
In the mean time if there's anything you'd like to know or you're curious about how things are going to change please don't hesitate to leave a comment and I'll gladly answer any questions you might have.

Oh yes, I also revamped the livestream page in anticipation of Patreon-only streams for those of you who might be joining us eventually <3: http://www.twitch.tv/zenuel

TL;DR: I have a Patreon, and I'm making video games.

You worked on STARBOUND?! Good gods, no wonder I like that game so much holy crap.
Great to see you making more games/game music in future. Looking forward to it~

Whoops might have replied in the wrong section, this phone is slow and buggy

Oh goodness haha! I'm honored; however I didn't do the music, that was the magnificent Curtis Schweitzer. :D

That NESJam game is actually pretty awesome. I love the concept and the writing is super clever and entertaining. Finding out who to talk to to get love in return (rather than just blowing your starting two love points on random selfish jerks and ending the game prematurely) is a neat puzzle element, too.

I wonder, though, is there an end condition besides the standard speech that happens when you give away that last of your love? I thought maybe I could "beat" the game if I found a way to love everyone, but either I was wrong or I missed someone.

    • Link

Hehe there is indeed actually, it's a very specific series of people/things to talk with. It's; in an odd twist of tradition, the true Game Over screen. Did you find the trash can that talks? They're key to completing it. :D

The poor little timid thing in the trash can, you mean? That was one of the first things I found, and one of the reasons I was actually able to play for a prolonged period of time instead of just ending the game after the first two people I talked to. Poor little sweetie <3

Even with that, though, I seem to just wander around until I run out of people, then give the rest to that grouchy guy that even his own brother doesn't like ("maybe things will be different if I give him love eight times! No? Well, I think I gave it to pretty much everyone else already so it's not like I have better uses for it anyway") and then get the speech about how I gave up the thing that was keeping me alive without expecting anything in return and they're so proud of me. (Which is a really sweet speech, by the way! Excellent writing!)

Oh, never mind, I just tried again and there's the the full love ending. Hooray!

        • Link

:D! Haha you're probably the only person to get that ending; or at least the only one I've heard from. I'm so glad you liked it, I learned so much while making it.

It's very fascinating to me, since it runs so contrary to what I had expected! Again, my first assumption was that I needed to use the bonus love that certain people give you to find a way to have enough to give love to everyone, at which point ... something would happen, I guess. Instead, it's based on maxing out the bar, which you do by only loving the people who love you back, and ignoring all the selfish jerks. Which is very thought provoking; I think there may be some deeper lesson about life in there somewhere.

            • Link

Hehe, it does mention at the end if giving love to those who don't seem to notice was less important than giving it to those who do. I'm honored you enjoyed it, it means a lot to see it played through and thought about; as was intended! :D
