Why did I quit Skype? by BarkerJr

Microsoft is evil. They seem to have bought Skype just to kill off the competition to MSN Messenger. Sure, they kept the popular UI, but they keep removing features to bring Skype to the MSN level. They merged the networks together, and the familiar security lock that used to appear at the bottom of every Skype window has disappeared.

Microsoft is evil. Some decade ago I got a letter from their lawyers indicating that they no longer wanted my business. As a kid. Over a single $10 eBay sale. Legal threats. Since then I've sworn to not use any Microsoft product except Windows, which is required for games.

The Skype apps suck. The Windows app is using more memory and providing less functionality. There are so many ads everywhere now. The mobile app is worse, placing the Call button right under the textbox you tap in order to type, making accidental calls incredibly easy. The app doesn't notify you of incoming messages most of the time, either.

Skype's website sucks. Once you've merged your Skype account with your MSN account, it's not possible to change your email address without providing your full name, country, and language. These are not things I want in my public profile. Skype doesn't respect my privacy.

Skype infrastructure sucks. Not to get into the fact that they're running Windows servers, they don't support IPv6. IPv6 is the next generation of Internet, and it seems that Skype is the only popular application that refuses to support IPv6, per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_IPv6_application_support . IPv6 is needed for innovation on the internet. Their refusal to support it is reckless and shows their disrespect of the internet as a whole.

Hangouts is better. At this point, it does everything that Skype does, but better, and it's already running in my phones. The only reason to use Skype now is because your friends haven't upgraded to Hangouts yet, the same reason for still using Facebook. Skype has decided to remain in the past, show them that you'll also put them in your past!

I'm still also on Steam, Twitter, and IRC.
