Why can't I find a stand-alone novel worth reading? by Aldin

A relative is having day surgery this coming Monday. I get "first watch" at the relative's house that day. I'm out of reading material. So, off to local "big box" book store in the hopes of finding something that I would be interested in reading and will not have a hard time explaining to said relative.

My tastes? Sci-fi, fantasy ("furry" and traditional in those first two), alternate history, and some "traditional"/"mainstream" fiction. Could I find a stand-alone novel that would interest me enough to plunk down money? No. What I did find were a few series that that might have caught my interest if idiot big box store would think to stock the first book in said series. There was this new release that caught my interest until I determined it was a sequel. Could I find the first book? No. Not even a hole on the shelf where it would be. Idiots. I came across a few like that. I didn't bother writing them down, but probably should have. Oh well.

And with my needing this "now", I can't just order something online. And, no, I don't own a kindle or other electronic book reading device. I'm old fashion and like a dead-tree edition book in my hands. Then again, you really need to know a book title or author before you can find something online and order it. If bookstores ever die off completely, new authors are screwed unless they're really, really good at social networking/promotion on their own.

Guess I'll go through my small library and find something that: A. I wouldn't mine reading again right now, and B. Is something I can easily explain without embarrassment to said relative.

Why can't I find a stand-alone novel worth reading?
