New Policy, Everyone by VibrantEchoes

This may lose me some business, but I swear this is where the majority of my frustration with commissions comes from, so I'm implementing this with all future commissions (not current ones). I am no longer accepting commissions of any characters that have no accurate references.

I cannot tell you guys how many times I've asked for all the details of a character's design, drawn the character, and then the creator hands it back to me and points out 5 more details I got wrong because I did them slightly differently than what THEY pictured (even though I followed the instructions given). This is usually the worst with reference sheet commissions, which I'm seriously considering discontinuing as well. I've spent weeks sending notes back and forth with people who can't seem to describe what it is they want the first time around, sometimes people I can barely understand, and sometimes people who OBSESS over the tiny details that can often just be attributed to my own drawing style more than me getting the design itself wrong.

I'm not trying to call out anyone in particular, this has happened MANY times. And I'm honestly very frustrated and sick of it. So, yeah, unless you're commissioning a character reference sheet, I'm not going to draw blindly anymore. And if I keep having this much trouble with reference sheet commissions, I'm either going to jack up the price for how much time is wasted with back-and-forth notes, or just not offer them anymore.

I love these people. I am a decently-well-known commissioner, and a lot of people who just want free art are these guys.

You can also give a rule for how many times something can be changed. Maybe say...one chance to change anything at an early level. And require all commissions to either have a reference of some sort already, or at least an easy to read and understand description. And I would suggest requiring it be pre-written, and not spoken. A lot of confusion can come when someone is actively talking about a design, especially those of fickle mind. So getting something together beforehand is paramount to help avoid madness.
