Footsteps of the Prophet by Levi

I've been posting an old story to this site lately, and while I'm going to be utilizing folders shortly, I've encountered the problem I always do: I have no idea how to title the submissions.

Currently the titles are very technical and in my mind boring. The thing is, each submission is a new chapter, and for this story, every chapter has a unique title. So I could be labelling each submission with a chapter title.

These are the options as I see them:

  • Footsteps of the Prophet, Part, Chapter Number
  • Footsteps of the Prophet, Chapter Number
  • Part, Chapter Number
  • Chapter Title

A few other variations too but I'm not in the mood to list the rest. What is another good, simple, yet eye-catching method that you know of?

If you want to have separate files for each chapter, definitely place the chapter number before the chapter name or part number. The reader shouldn't ever have to hunt to find the next chapter in the story, and it's also important that the website keep all the FotP files in one place and properly sorted. (i.e. Footsteps_of_the_Prophet_-_Chapter_01_etc...).

Personally, I would consider keeping the first chapter up as an easy to access text sample, but then also submit the entire work as a single PDF (or Word) file with a TOC, headers, nice fonts, etc. I've actually done this myself with long multi-part submitted stories simply to make them easier to read offline and to avoid having to hunt for the next section when I'm just getting into the story.

What I've done so far is have first-previous-next links in each chapter description so I am not too worried about having to hunt for the next. It is possible, but I'm not sure how likely for most people.

This is an 800-page story so I am definitely not submitting the entire thing at once. That is too much of a burden on the reader.

What I am asking is how best to label the submission titles here. The filenames are what they are. I don't see how your proposed system is better than what I already have.

Well the problem I faced when reading it is that the long title takes up all the space Weasyl allocates for the submission name, so the chapter number isn't visible and the submissions all appear to have the same name. As a practical suggestion, I recommend omitting "Bereshith" in the submission name or somehow moving it to the end. i.e. Footsteps of the Prophet, Ch. 09 -- Bereshith. (The leading zero may be necessary to get Weasyl to keep the chapters in order).

It's a very interesting story, by the way. I liked the two main characters a great deal. I haven't read all of it yet, but I do think you need to elaborate the fall of the dragons. It seems incredible that the Shimron's tribe would blow him off so easily in favor of a smooth talking stranger. I'd also expect that for such a non-violent people, the sight of Shimron's maimed wings would be truly horrifying and lend great weight to his claims.

On a related note, I was puzzled at the beginning that Kardanath did not immediately become suspicious of Lamech when the first thing he did was attempt to get the guy who saved his life into trouble over a question of modesty he easily could have asked Shimron or even Kardanath about directly without making any accusations. Kardanath seems oddly naive for such an important leader, and I think you need to flesh out his character further.

The last bit I got to was the part where Shimron is given the fruit that makes him quasi-immortal and receives his divine commission. In his place, I'd be asking God or his angel for ID! You know there are pretty bad associations with the idea of eating supernatural fruit offered by supernatural beings... I personally think a direct verbal commission, as God gave the OT prophets, or that Jesus gave to his disciples, might be more appropriate.

I'm looking forward to continuing this story. It's unlike anything I've read before, and I think it has great potential.
