Tell me about your characters! by OddOly

Grabbing this from Briarwood -
tell me a random fact about one (or more) of your OCs, and I will respond with a related fact about my own!

I'll get more active art-wise soon but there was a heatwave (and it still is too hot), I had a birthday and I have work to do again. I seem to be just chronically tired this summer.

Tell me about your characters!

Mar's favorite drink is iced coffee, and Bastian (the lion <-) has a particular thing for coconut water. (sorry, everything about me seems to be coffee related!)

    • Link

Ahaha, I still need to finish those memes but YES, COFFEE! Chauncey doesn't get the idea of iced tea and coffee - there is a story planned where he visits the USA (though explaining the reason for that would be spoilery) and one of the things that confuse him is tea being sold cold and in bottles since he's used to drinking it hot and made from tea bags.

They obviously have bottled tea in the UK too but from what I understand it's not the first thing that comes to mind when you say "tea" in the UK (just like here).

      • Link

Mm, cold tea. I drink my tea almost exclusively cold, I'm an American nutjob. :P

        • Link

Hehe, I'm the opposite - I drink hot tea and coffee a lot in cold weather and when it gets hot I just switch to soda and mineral water entirely.

Roman is incredibly good at writing in bubble letters!

    • Link

That's an unusual skill (that every kid would like to have)! :D

Russell http://charahub.com/character/71804/Russell-Bryon doesn't want to learn Braille because he thinks it's useless with modern adapted computers and audiobooks and such and because he actively hates doing anything "typical" blind people do.

Also random but I'm not sure I'd officially qualify as dyslexic but I always do this thing with mixing up similarly looking letters both when reading and writing unless I pay attention and I used to think Roman was Rowan for quite a large chunk of time until I noticed. XP

      • Link

He learned it from the group of cheerleaders he used to hang around in late middleschool and early highschool. They fawned over him a lot and he got both his art skills and his sheer LOVE of gossip from them. He cannot keep his damn mouth shut.

Does Russell eventually end up learning it?

        • Link

Heheh, this is interesting! I rarely see stories with cheerleaders fawning over anyone besides jocks (as in people who are into sports, not the Scottish :D) - was it for any particular reason (since I have a hard time imagining Roman being a jock)?

Russell gets bribed to study it for treats and such at one point but he never learns it properly since it is used mostly for labelling food and medication these days and not every manufacturer does it. Russell is really just trying to ignore his situation as much as possible since in his head any attempt to learn any adapted technologies seems like a step towards folding cardboard boxes for a living for the rest of his life. Basically teen years are probably the worst time of life to become disabled.

They actually sort of 'adopted' him into their pack since the other boys would stuff him into lockers or tuba cases and other fun places since he was so small and had a stutter and was also gay so the girls would protect him. He was also just genuinely fun to be around and as he grew older always kept a large circle of friends. He never had a BEST friend really but he was on good terms with most people.

8( And man that sucks. I'm seeing less and less places using it. The most I see it is on like...softdrink lids at fast food places and occasionally door numbers in the hospital. I did see that picture of him working the radio and he seemed much happier!

            • Link

Aww, I see! I'm glad they did it, I don't think many people actually have a BEST friend (especially past school years) but it's important to have some friends in your life.

Yeah, I think it's sad that almost nobody uses it for marking packaging and doors and such (it's one of those small things that AREN'T HARD TO DO but ooh, the majority doesn't need it so...) but I don't think it's going to be used for actual texts much except for deafblind people (but they often have additional learning disabilities so not many of them read at all). This reminds me of a buddy of Troy I need to draw.

But Russell does become happier eventually. I can't promise a happy ending for every character (especially since I think that the end of any story is also a beginning of a new story) but Cop Story was never about wallowing in misery, it's more about figuring out how to actually enjoy life.

Guilina's favorite food is vanilla pudding and she is very friendly to others.

    • Link

Donovan https://www.weasyl.com/submission/659481/pool-party-play-nicely also eats pudding regularly since he has swallowing difficulties and can't really eat hard food. But he definitely isn't the friendliest character with swallowing difficulties I have so maybe I should have picked someone else to talk about right now. :D

-Portos does the cat loaf thing sometimes. Go on, picture a scary twelve-foot-tall dragon with his legs all tucked under him like a kitty. c:

-Vaughn gets ugly knitted clothes from his Aunt Maddie for the holidays, every year, without fail.

-Julian almost always sleeps in the nude.

-Blaine is very impulsive. He's always picking up new activities- or people- as his projects, buying or giving things away on a whim, flitting from one occupation to another.

D'aww, oh gosh, this is cute (and more intimidating to poke than a cat)! If you haven't drawn it yet you should! :D Graham's dog Wanker is really overweight and likes lying around in ridiculous poses on furniture he's not allowed on.

Walker has a suspicious amount of police-themed clothes for someone not employed in police and over the age of six. And ugly sweaters are fun to draw, everyone should draw characters wearing them at least once a year (I try but run out of time every December)!

Troy chews his clothes and bedding if he can't sleep and Nutter usually sleeps in a Hulk t-shirt.

Quinton changed a lot of jobs (from an artist to random manual labour jobs to a minor politician and so on) and moved all over the UK and met a lot of people when he was younger because he was just too easygoing and fun-loving to stay in one place and do one thing. There also was a lot of substance abuse involved. :P

Plugra has played video games all night on many occasions and not realized the time until the sun has started to rise.

    • Link

Teague used to play video games a lot when he was younger. Eventually his arms and hands got too weak for a controller and he needs an adapted one now but he's really upset about the whole issue and says he doesn't want a "weird" controller anyway.

      • Link

Poor Teague. :< PLUGRA ALSO ENJOYS WATCHING OTHER PEOPLE PLAY VIDEO GAMES. hahaha

        • Link

I have a lot of characters who enjoy watching other people play (I was like that all my childhood, honestly I miss sitting next to a friend and doodling while they play some video game) but Teague is definitely not one of them. He needs to be in the centre of the action and he needs to do it in a way that makes him feel in control - he's okay with powerchair football but he hates activities that are pretty much him being towed around by other people (like swimming).

Mike Piasa (aka 'Mr. Pizza') owns his company after leaving a larger firm where he worked as a senior project manager. He got sick of the rat race, and the pressure to climb the corporate ladder at the expense of the people below him. He started FG llc with the goal of treating people as people as well as employees.

Adriancia Saywa is the only person in her village who can read. She has to keep this a secret, because Hibairu tea plantation owners do not allow native Karshans to learn letters.

(Got a little long winded... oops)

    • Link

Long-winded is fine - I love finding out about other people's characters! :]

Carl Rhels (the guy in a power wheelchair, I don't have a good separate picture of him yet) is self-employed - after graduating he originally considered getting employed full time but his first few jobs were freelance, and he was good at them and got more clients and so on until he realised he can comfortably work from home instead of trying to adjust to other people. He's a bit lonely but at least he's not made fun of.

Mike sounds nice - honestly I think so many people hate their jobs because people on top are not interested in making it good for anyone below and don't know much about realities of actual work of people they control. And even companies that start out as good and innovative either die out or turn into corporate monsters as well. So I'm curious about how Mike's story develops!

I take it there is some interesting story behind Adriancia learning to read? And WTF tea plantation owners. 8I

Dale M. Hunt doesn't know any sign language because he was homeschooled by his paranoid veteran father who taught him to read lips but no sign language. Dale feels a bit left out because of it since he misses out on a lot of conversations and it's very obvious that he's deaf from the way he speaks so people often avoid him but he also can't communicate with other deaf people that well since he doesn't understand BSL or any other sign language. He lives in a world of his own which really worries his older brother Stan who has been taking care of Dale since their father died and thinks that Dale really could be more independent.

  • Link

Man, that's gotta be hard for Dale. He seems to be in a catch22 situation where he doesn't really fit in anywhere :( I guess we're all an amplification of our parents' aspirations and fears in some way or another...

I like Carl Rhel's work situation. Freelancing sounds like a great alternative to the grind at the factory (probably because I've never done it... most freelancers I've talked to say they stress out about making ends meet month-to-month).

As far as Adri goes, she got in good with the plantation owner's daughter ;) She knows how to do a lot of things the other workers have never done.

    • Link

Yeah... It's not as hard for Dale as it would be for some of my characters (like Carl or even Chauncey) because he has a naturally upbeat personality and he doesn't register the awkwardness of his situation most of the time. Still, he wouldn't get in so much trouble if he was better adjusted - but I guess that also could be said about all of us...

I'm a freelancer and some observations about my job situation went into Carl's story - we have a lot of similarities there.Everything has upsides and downsides, so does freelancing in general and especially freelancing done by introverts. I'm glad to have very limited human interaction instead of seeing annoying colleagues daily but I can also see how it's not that good for me sometimes. But like in Carl's case it's only partly a conscious choice - I got my first proper freelancing gig about a month after graduating uni, then another one, then I realised it was an okay option for my situation and stuck with it.

This week is really busy work-wise so right now I can rant about downsides of freelance for a while - it's kind of like living on a timer going off at random times, nobody ever bothers on deciding what they want before the last minute. I'm doing jobs for 3 clients this week and they all want it around Friday/weekend. Let's just say I'm not a happy camper (money is nice but I'm too tired to be happy about that). One of the jobs is a picture for a calendar - what, did those people not know 2015 is going to happen in two month? :/

I am so rooting for Adri! :D Even if she's not going to start a revolution or anything I hope things will work out for her!
