The Alphas and Omegas: Literal Mini Rant by Silvermane

The Alphas and the Omegas

I’ve been reading a lot of werewolf novels, short stories, and synopsis. I am trying to find one that appeals but overall I can summarize a great deal of them as this:

An often times reluctant Alpha werewolf meets a human who just happens to be the perfect mate and of course is a submissive omega. The sex of the Alpha or Omega is almost redundant as this idea covers both straight, gay, and everything in between as far as couplings. You may also think it only applies to the more romance/erotic driven stories but no, even horror novels are going to these lines.

In a broader sense the whole Alpha/Omega idea is rather over played in werewolf literature. Where are the Betas, Gamma’s, those people who are natural born leaders but also don’t like being on the bottom rung. I am willing to bet if people were to become werewolves there wouldn’t be just the a typical Alphas and Omegas, there would be others after all not everyone is one dimensional so why are werewolves put into columns A and B (or in this case O)? Is it just sloppy writing? A lack of creativity? The current trend in the mythology?

I personally am getting tired of the two roles being used over and over. Change it up. Heck maybe have role reversals, an Alpha that becomes Omega, an Omega that becomes Alpha. Or better how about no Alpha can mate with a lowly Omega isn’t that what natural wolves do after all? Switch it up or better yet don't even get into roles just have the werewolves be monsters.

While on this subject can we also make the werewolves in human form at least, not all goreous and impossible models of male and female so called perfection? How about a slightly overweight werewolf? Or average person? Just to change things up. Pleeeeeeeease gives beggy eyes

The whole body type/style thing is pretty prevalent EVERYWHERE as we (US anyway) is getting more and more fixated with "body perfection" on all genders. Just look at most movies/TV/photos nowadays. Or even all the photos people keep putting up on Facebook or any other social media outlet. Take into consideration the SHEER amount of commerce that goes into weight loss, exercise, clothing, etc.

I think the whole Alpha/Omega thing is just coming down to people not really putting much effort into being original anymore. I know it's a bit of a cop-out saying that without any further discussion, but generally "on the whole" (giggidy) people are relatively lazy and many are creatively bankrupt - at least when it comes to making something with a mass-market appeal. Be it they don't want to put the effort in, or audiences have just devolved into the "Idiocracy" stage of being where nobody wants to put any thought into anything anymore.

Oh I agree the perfect body type is pretty prevalent in just about everything just seems every Alpha role is one of supreme perfect chiseled males and the omega is less than perfect. Weight loss is bad for werewolves, we need our sheep to be plump :)

There was a time when it was original. I think Patricia Briggs is the only current writer who still goes into it on the idea of each has a unique role and that there are down falls, Alphas being too aggressive and protective to the point of hurting or killing others, Omega's that are too misunderstood to be effective. It still works but when those roles are just stated with no real action to back them up it is lazy. This is sadly true.
