So, at my b/f's farm there is a mummified fox. We thought other animals and bugs would have torn it to shreds by now but it just looks like some alien leathery creature - and it's been almost 4 years.
I know that if it's buried it should help the decomposition but I don't want to lose the small bones. Basically, I don't really know what I'm doing XD I'm ok with not having the full skeleton, but I think it'd be a missed opportunity to have one so perfectly preserved sitting right there and not do anything with it. At most I want to see if I can donate it to a science place or something (though I'm sure these, in reality, are a dime a dozen).
It's a long shot but is there anything I can do to bury it but reduce the risk of losing the smaller bones?
Well, don't know exactly what I am doing but I recommend putting it in a cardboard and poking some small holes in the sides of the shoebox so bugs can get in. Also possibly wrap it in some wire mesh? though if that rusted I assume the bones might get rusty. Burlap or cheese cloth might be useful. Typically I would take a skeleton and boil it to loosen the remaining flesh off it. Some people use insects, though considering that one is already mummified I think maybe a lot of the bugs are already done with it. I found a cat mummified like that in a barn once; brought he skull back but I think my mom threw it out. That possum I found in the barn a few months ago is probably well on its way to being mummified -- its babies and all.
I've seen them in action - so amazing. I don't have the setup / room for them sadly. I also don't think I'd have much more for them to eat after D: I am going to look for some outside help with this and see if, in the meantime, I can get my hands on some burlap or cheese cloth. The only thing about the cardboard is that earwigs and centipedes etc. would get into it and ruin the box, as well as mildew and such since it's been raining here like crazy.
That is super neat though you have a mother and babies that are being mummified o.o That's got to be quite the interesting creature to see.

Probably pulling a Captain Obvious here, but local taxidermists might be worthwhile to seek advice/help from, or look for a more artsy taxidermist online to ask.
