Facebook conducted secret psychology experiment on users' emotions (article) by Jive

Yet another reason for me to avoid Facebook.

They act like this is just a harmless social experiment, but for people with depression and other mental illnesses, this could actually endanger lives. But of course, they're not worried about that... because pseudoscience.
I ditched FB a long time ago, and this just confirms that that decision was a good one.

Ugh, awful! I've thought about getting rid of my FB account for a long time. I mostly just use it for school-related stuff now since not all my classmates have/use Skype and prefer FB to communicate while working on projects (even some professors believe it or not are easier to reach through FB than their own email, ugh) D:

FB has really become very integrated into the education system... I know exactly what you mean about professors being easier to reach there than elsewhere, which boggles my mind.
And, now that you mention it, FB has really wormed its way into the activism scene as well. It's especially worrisome when you consider that they have no trouble altering and censoring their users' newsfeeds. I've literally been told by non-profit and political organizations, when asking for an alternative to facebook, "well, we have this other site but it's never active..." or even "we don't really have anything other than FB." It's amazing how much trust people want to invest in a corporation that obviously does not have their best interests at heart.

Facebook is where I've removed everyone from the newsfeed and fill it up with articles from sites and news outlets. Oh and the local cafe so I know what's the special is for lunch. Only check it in the morning then log out, got the photos cleared out, most optional info deleted and just a little bit more it'll be almost like I'm not even using it. I wish I just never got into it.

I'm glad I never got into it, myself. I can understand reading news articles and stuff there at times, I suppose, but the fact that it's so heavily monitored and orchestrated and public just makes it a huge no for me.

Thanks facebook, for sowing even more distrust on psychologists by the general population! JUST WHAT I NEEDED!!!!!!!

    • Link

Yeah, I wish psychologists would avoid doing shit like this. Because psychological studies are important! We need those to advance as a culture and society. But... doing largescale experiments on random internet users? No, bad, stop.

I would be surprised if they hadn't.

    • Link

Yeah, me too. Still, a lot of people are shocked by this turn of events, so sharing the news around is likely to get people talking about it, at least. I'm more astonished by the number of people I've seen (elsewhere) trying to say it's "harmless" and "so what?" and who will still be using FB without a thought.

I avoid FB like the plague. I don't even like going to pages someone linked me.

hmmm, yea this is even more reason for me to leave fb :/ I had a feeling they were doing shit like this. oh well. time to deactivate mine.

    • Link

Yeah, I sort of expected something along these lines, myself, but the fact that they're revealing it as just some natural and harmless evolution of their site is what gets me. As if the public (and their users) don't have any right to be put off by this... as if being unnerved by mass manipulation of emotions is illogical.

putting "research" in the terms and conditions /is not an acceptable excuse for performing human experiments/. I don't know if everyone realizes exactly how /incredibly/ degrading of a thought "research on unwitting humans is ok because it's for science!!!" is. literally and actually 1984 / brave new world. fuck. bye I am going to live in the outer regions of the universe.

        • Link

and while people seem to have gotten used to the concept of connecting data from humans unwittingly with profit in mind, suddenly it's not ok if the aim is for scientific research. maybe the real experiment is to see how jaded we are to corporations collecting our data n shit. I have never been this conspiracy theorist before in my life but I guess I'm ready and able to be this paranoid now because I deem it necessary in this world and especially in this country haha

          • Link

People like to try to separate science from morality, as if harmful things done for scientific purposes become somehow less harmful... I'll never understand it.
Paranoia is something I'm very familiar with.

            • Link

that is indeed usually the case, which makes it weird that people are reacting so violently all of a sudden when this bullshit happens under the excuse that it's being done for scientific purposes!
