Help Me Help Myself to New Gear! by ProphetEKA

Fair Warning: If you follow me at more than one spot where I post stuff - be it an art archive or social media spot - this is going to get Crazy redundant real quick so please give it a read-through but know this'll be the same info you see elsewhere.

Now to the important stuff! My computer, for all its awesome new parts, is still unstable. Not to an unusable point but it's not in as excellent a shape as I'd like personally. I wish I was talking about something I could write off as frivolous like it's memory isn't maxed out or the graphics card isn't bleeding edge enough. No... it's the hard drive and it's getting down to its last legs.

I run two drives in my computers: The Main and The Media. It used to be three but that got a little too expensive power-wise. Instead, I paired it down to two - a 250gig Main and a 500gig Media split in half. The Main takes care of important system functions - the OS, all of my working files, my comic stuff and illustrations - while the Media takes care of the non-essentials - music, movies and video games. It would suck to lose either but I can still function (to a point) if the Media drive goes down. It's why I keep them separate.

For all of my precautions, something has finally gotten to my Main drive. That something is age. -.-

It's has been showing its age as of late and only recently went down so hard I had to reinstall everything to get things straight again. It has developed a sound - not a tick but possibly bad bearings - and has hung on startup enough times that I figure an upgrade is in order.

So why all the verbage? Simple. I want it clear Exactly what I'm trying to do with this so folks don't get it twisted when they see my usual comments about hitting up various cons later in the summer. I know how bad that looks - Oh, do I know how bad that looks - but this... this is a more immediate need.

If you'd like to help me out, there are two really awesome options: Buying Digital Books or Hire Me for stuff.

First Option: Buying my wares.

  • From Me: You can get every volume of Biff the Vampire from me directly. It nets me the best cut of funds while keeping things their cheapest for you.
  • Drivethru Comics: Another great place to find all the Biff books. Slightly less of a cut for me but a damn fine place to shop for digital comic goodness of all kinds.
  • Gumroad: Same deal as Drivethru. You can buy the Biff books and it's the only place you can pick up my "Ghouls'R Gals" monster-themed art book.

You might be wondering why I'm not linking to my Zazzle shops. Simply put, they have good quality product but the price is too high and the cut I get is 10% of the sale. You get a $20 t-shirt, I get $2 which will be in store credit 'till it hits a $100 minimum payout. Past performance shows this isn't the best option for things with a short timeframe. Great for physical gifts, though.

Second Option: Hire Me.
This is the rarely used option for the simple fact that I don't normally do commissions. It's not that I don't take them, it's that I just call it work. I've been hired by folks to do everything from short strips for advertising to logo design and even the occasional good ol' fashioned character pic. Most folks shy away from this option in part because I tend not to promote it and that I charge hourly rates.

The prices are...

  • Traditional: $20 an hour
  • Digital: $40 an hour

These are what I've found work best for myself and my clients. I keep strict controls on time and, since I have been known to juggle multiple projects at once, I only charge for when I'm working on that project. On many occasions, I will broadcast parts of the project for greater client input and to keep my times even more honest.

Since some jobs may not pan out past the sketch stage, I do require at least $20 up front for my time.

The final thing that many tend to get spooked by is the final price. Since I do this as a part of my business, I roll with similar rules when it comes to payments. I am flexible and most of my clients are more than happy to pay in installments that we agree upon while setting up the job. I can work within most budgets and my turnaround times are reasonable.

If you'd like more info on hiring me, simply drop by my handy-dandy (and hopefully still functional) web form or cut out the middleman and email me at jobs (at) ProphEKA (dot) com.

Hopefully this gives folks a good run-down of things. I'm in need of new equipment and I'm pretty sure you could always use more comics and artwork in your life. = )

Thank you for your time.
