Bäkk home ! by Tiido

So I'm back home !
I was visiting my parents and attending the birthday of my granny who turned 70.
I also got the Toshiba and the customs people have taken the charger of it ! I managed to make an IBM charger compatible with it and the machine works nicely. In fact I'm typing from it hahaha. I will raise some hell at the post office tomorrow !

There's some problems/annoyances though :

  • Keyboard layout - it is missing right CTRL, it has stupid single row enter key. Ins and Del keys should be in top right were it has Win Key and Context Menu key. The keys are bit mushy compared to my HP aswell. The laptop is as wide as the HP is, they could have had a proper keyboard, whole centimeter is usable.... I will look at hacking the keyboard controller someday to do some keys remapping ^^
  • The screen hinge is little loose. I will swap that one, the parts machine I bought has solid one.
  • This thing gets hot. I havd heard good things about Pentium M but for now I say Turion 64 wipes floor with it. In 800MHz power conserve mode the AMD CPU will barely get warm, the M needs cooling... and M is like realllllly slow at 800MHz, YT is slideshow while Turion hiccups sometimes but video is watchable.
  • This thing has XP Tablet Edition on it, and it seems to have huge lag for pen input. I will experiment with Wacom's own driver, maybe it helps. I won't be using XP here for long anyway... this machine shall be made 98SE/ME compatible in one way or other. Most of the hardware has 9x drivers, video will need some INF hacking probably.
  • Sound is garbage... but so is the sound of most other laptops compared to the HP NX6125. The HP can actually play bass, 33% of the laptop is a dedicated resonance chamber !
  • Ports in front - mic and headphones. I will have to relocate the audio out somewhere else.

There's some stuff I really like though :

  • Magnesium alloy chassis. Light and strong !
  • Trackpoint in the middle of the keyboard, I love that thing !
  • Largeass screen compared to most other machines of same type, and high res too - 14.1" 1400x1050 !
  • Powerful audio amp chip ! I will have to poke it more...
  • Volume adjustment wheel ! Almost no laptop has those these days.
  • No buzzing and other noises in the audio output :D

Too bad there seems to be no accomodations for lefties as far as pen input goes. Scrollbars are in wrong side of the screen and pen holder in right too hahahahahaha.

I will mess around with the software side a bit and then start drawing ! I got almost no input as far as my previous journal goes so I'll do all the requests once stuff works ^^

Bäkk home !
