Artslam 2014! by Caelan

Hey folks, I wanted to let you know about an art group that you might be interested in participating in! Artslam runs every summer; you can choose to do one, two, or three months, with the goal of producing something each day (even just a sketch or progress on something!) with the focus of developing a concept, progressing on certain abilities, etc. It's all self-determined so it's a great venue for developing that personal project you've been trying to get around to!

And the best thing about Artslam, hands down, is the community. All of my online art friends are people I met through Artslam, cause they are all keepers. The community is super friendly, very enthusiastic, and always just as interested in the story going on in a project as in the art itself. I find it to be that perfect balance of encouragement and constructive critique. If you're a world builder, this is a great place to see the diverse projects of other people come to life while getting feedback on your own. I've gotten some great questions and interest in regards to my own world building on Artslam, which can be hard to find through other venues. So check it out!

Artslam is at I think it's 6th year running? It started on LJ and remains at home on there; you can find the sign ups for that here. There is also a tumblr side now, though it lacks the venue for feedback that makes the community so worthwhile. Really, it is worth it just to make/dig up an LJ account!

Just remember that in order to participate, your sign up needs to be in before June 1st- otherwise you'll have to wait until the next month starts to step in.

Anyway, I hope to see you there!

Hm. This sounds interesting. I might make an attempt at it and I might not. I'm not really certain at the moment. It does sound enticing though. c:

You could always sign up for one month to start and see how that goes! They re-open sign ups before the second and third months start, so that you can change things then if desired. Sometimes people will do a different theme for every month, too, to avoid getting burnt out.

I've barely clung onto my LJ but I know it's still there. This might make me redesign and continue using it. c:

A different theme every month is a really good idea.

Ha, yeah... I post once every month or five...? But Im trying to use it more again, even if just for myself!

I hope you do join us! C:

This sounds fun! I'm one of those people clinging to LJ with a death grip despite its huge decrease in popularity over the years, so this appeals to me. Question! What amount of work have you taken on in the past in a single month? I know we're all different, but I'm just trying to think about and get a feel for what might be achievable in a single month.

Glad to hear of another LJ holdout! I only post once every month or few, but I would do so more if it were more active. Social media has trended towards short and trivial and that's just no way to get to know people like you could in dem good ol days, ha.

In regards to Artslam or in general? Gosh, uhh. For the past few years I've almost constantly had either school and/or a full time job, and usually was trying to fit something or other in on top of that. Last year was my first time doing Artslam while having a full time job (as opposed to being off for the summer), and it did cut into how much I could get done, but I still more or less got in a scrap or so every day? But I had to fudge it toward the end when I got behind some.

Looking at my tumblr in archive mode might provide some insight as to my work output on a month to month basis over time, but some thumbnails actually represent more than one image in a set (though it's rare I do that.) May and April of 2012 and January of 2013 probably represent my most productive months, going by that measure. (Spring 2012 was insane in workload from school. I don't really care to push myself THAT bone raw any more!)

I tend to only post if I feel like there's a lot to get off my chest, but trust me when I say, LJ has ALWAYS been the place where I am most real and honest, and I don't see that changing til they delete the site! I have accounts with a few of the more current social media booms, but the only friends I've managed to make a connection with online are the ones I made on LJ, several years ago. It's crazy!

Thanks for the workflow ideas! I was a little iffy on pushing the project I've been working on to be due at the end of June rather than "as soon as I can finish it," but honestly in the end, I think this'll be good for me. I've really been struggling because I've had no real place with hard deadlines to check into. Hopefully this is just what I need! I just signed up on LJ and tumblr. :D Yaaaay! Thanks for recommending it.

Same! It's always been a place for me to work through my own thoughts when stuff is bothering me. On other venues I feel almost whiny doing such; but on LJ it feels right. Like there's more trust there, or something.

Awesome! Glad to have you along! :D
