what do you do when you are in an artistic rut? (advice please!) by tytonidae

(copypaste across various sites so apologies if you are seeing this multiple times!!)

Hello everyone! Hope you are all well!

So like the title suggests, I'm in a mild rut at the moment. I'm sketching a lot and I'm thumbnailing/sketching for comics but when it comes to finished pieces I can't help but feel my art has become very bland and boring. Unappealing and stiff.

So, a two pronged question!:

1) What do you think I could do to make my art to make it more interesting?
2) What do you do when you are in a bit of a deep spot with your own art?

Outside of this, there is not much to report on. I turn 21 on Thursday, and to celebrate I'm going to see the new Godzilla movie and get some food with my brother. Here's hoping for some sweet 'zilla rampage. Hope everyone is doing well (and if you are currently studying, best of luck with closing everything up!)

I think the most common block people get is they can't do work, or they aren't getting ideas but beyond that as you noted is 'if you're work isn't interesting' and that's a specific problem I've dealt with. The solution I have is very simple and it just relies on basic self-awareness. Am I making art, or am I just using gimmicks? We could argue what art is, but RG Collingwood noted nearly a century ago, that the philosophy of art is better split into one for philosophers to split hairs with, and one for artists who could use more practical advice.

So in real terms: I make a list of art I want to make, not one that's based on ability or constraints but just really what kind of artist I want to be. This may preclude a direction, if I wanted to do more animaton I'd be drifting away from material if someone was gearing more towards landscape art. But let's say I want to be a figure artist, and if that was the case my art would be mostly gimmicks. Flashy colours, glitch art effects, .. not much going on for hands, body types or full fledged poses. So I just change my art direction at a speed I'm comfortable with, and we're already enroute to the solution; because when it comes to making your art interesting, novelty and diversifying your portfolio is a pretty damn good way to go.

For the second question, the deep spot for me currently, is just my work ethic. It's poor as fuck, it's so poor it can barely afford to pay attention. If I actually settle down to make an image it takes me off and on three days, while professional illustrators can produce three illustrations in a single day! How can I compete with that? Well, the solution is easy, I set targets in the same way body builders increase the amount of reps they do each week. But it helps to be 'smart' about these things, as I think few people could achieve three illustrations in an hour, so it helps to have targets that are; specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timed. I do the life coaching thing, so I know about 'S.M.A.R.T.' Goals which is half the battle for getting out of this slump, the other half is just doing it.

Your art is delightful! Something I usually would plan to see as webcomic or sunday paper kind of things. Something i always kind of admire. To make your art more interesting, I can't really say, you gotta put more art out. If its for feedback and fame you either sell yourself to a fandom or just let time give you the satisfaction of hard work. If its for selling i already see artwork in your gallery you can easily sell for t-shirts or in galleries its just up to you to put it up there and try it out. You accomplished some good artwork here, sorry if I may not be of help on this question.

I took two years of fine arts, and I never remember much of the jargan they tried to put into my head. I just know I love to paint. That love of paint prevents me from going 'what do i paint.' Cause I aint no perfectionist, I work on my artwork till it looks finished, or as commissions allows me to a certain time point.

I figure i either make really bad artwork(what may be bad to me though seems sometimes very good by others) or I make good ones that people get really interested or i feel proud of myself, but I keep on keeping on. Sure i burned out a little just needed rest though more than anything else cause boy sure do I enjoy painting. Don't try to compare yourself to others use them as inspiration never as anything to take you down and hurt your ego. Just a bad idea mang. You get all over thinky and try hard to copy or go further than them and when your eyes tell you, you can't. Then its over you gone and beat yourself up to a point of stopping. See no good.

    Relax you doing fine -smiles-

when im in a rut i tend to do one of two things
    1) draw something that im really well versed in, just to make me feel comfortable and try to get the juices flowing
    2) have my gf/friends request random silly stuff to draw. after drawing a robot viking lesbian prostitute fight a robot ninja zombie lesbian prostitute, you tend to get more creative again.

Draw what seems interesting and care less about what other people think about your art and subject matter.

    Try new media.

If all else fails look at art you like best and try to figure out what exactly makes you feel this way - I'm not saying copying styles but it's okay to adopt some approach you find appealing, practice will turn it into your own kind of thing anyway.

A fictional detective I really like said "Everyone giving me advice sounds like they are talking to themselves." - think about that. :)
