I had posted this on my Tumblr a bit back, but Weasyl really should be working on distinguishing itself from other sites. However it depends on how they work on it.

One of the problems with Weasyl is a lot of wasted space. For example, Weasyl is set to be rather..."wide" and lots of blanks in the message centers. If an illustrator was interested in seeing more art why not have it on the side of the message center area? "More from other artists"

Or "More people who want critique" instead of just the front page?

If it were tailored for more what people want in their message center, I think it will help have more additional areas for artists to have works displayed instead of the stale front page.

The trick of course is not to create more clutter, but if you have a lot of dead space why not utilize it, either for advertising or ways to get people to get more involved in the site.
