Okay, this has been something I have noticed that has some debate surrounding it and that is the subject on whether or not Luna and Celestia can be considered deities in My Little Pony.

In my opinion, the answer is pretty damn obvious.

First of all, they possess "celestial" powers that NO other pony, alicorn or not can do.
Luna can raise and lower the moon while Celestia lowers and raises the sun.
You never see Twilight, Cadence or anyone else ever do that in the show therefore it is a power solely belonging to these two.

Celestia herself took over the duties of doing both during Nightmare Moon's imprisonment in the moon.

Secondly, they hold powers powerful enough to subdue other deity/powerful beings such as Sombra and Discord.
Discord in and of himself is described as the spirit of chaos and disharmony.
Even the Mane 6 couldn't defeat him at first.
Sombra possesses otherworldly powers as well as he is a being of shadow and cannot be defeated by just any pony.

Thirdly, NEVER in the show do you hear another pony say "Oh thank Twilight, you're here." or "Oh thank Cadence." It is almost ALWAYS "Thank Celestia."

Now why would they thank "just a princess"? It makes no sense whatsoever.

Fourth, they are thousands of years old. Luna herself we know to be at least 1,000 years old due to her time of imprisonment in the Moon.
Now I am no magician or unicorn but I can almost guarantee Cadence ain't even that old.

They also possess the ability to transform other ponies into Alicorns based upon the promise that they show.
Twilight nor Cadence has been alluded to perform this task.

Last [sub]I could go on but my wrists are hurting{/sub], both of them have some sort of celebration in their honor (ie NightMare Night/ Summer Sun Festival).

I think I have made my point in this.

It is blazingly obvious that these two were not meant to be seen as "merely princess ponies" but as deities that had brought a world back to life and possess immense power that is unmatched by any other existing pony.
