I've gotten a few friend requests from strangers or acquaintances. While I don't mean to seem insulting, I don't add people unless I'm already friends with them. And if I haven't added you yet, don't sweat it—you're not missing anything from my gallery.
I do see how it can be problematic, having to sort people you know into groups of friendship levels. I know a lot of people, and appreciate them all in their own ways. It's why I've never created a list of "cool peeps" user icons on my header, on FA. It's also why I set my "favourite artist" to myself—that, and it's funny, in a silly, self-absorbed way. I didn't want to elevate a handful of friends over the others, and become cliquey.
I'm actually quite approachable, though, so feel free to comment and note me! I make an effort to reply to nearly everything I get on here and FA.
yah, I have gotten a few from peeps i do not instantly recognize & hope they do not take offence when I don't also add them~
-I kinda like that it's a mutual thing, but see how it could be taken elitist-y (the hot-link 'peeps' on my various DA and FA pages are mostly there because I find myself having to dig either through comments/search/posts/submission to find their page again, so hot-linking makes it easier for me~ |'B )

This is pretty much how I'm handling friend requests too. I don't really plan on having 'friend's only' submissions unless they're entries like "Someone needs a room for -con-" or something ridiculously personal like that where I only want to get in contact with them (and then I'd just probably ask them anyway). So I'm only really accepting friend requests from people I talk to all the time / hang out with irl.
