Streaming for Tips? (PLEASE read and comment!) by stokerbramwell

Got something to ask you guys out there.

As some of you may know, I'm kind of hurting for money right now. To put it mildly. As many of you may also know I've been doing a lot of co-hosting of streams lately, especially with my buddy jonas. He (and a few others) have suggested that I consider streaming for tips.

Apparently people like listening to me talk for some odd reason or another. Which is good for me, because I love to ramble on incessantly about topics of interest to me. But would anybody out there reading this actually be interested in paying to hear that?

And what kind of streams would you like? Jonas and I have done a few movie streams where we kind of give the stuff we're watching the MST3K treatment, and those seem to be going over well. What about game streams? Or any other kind of streams?

I'm genuinely curious if this would be viable and I'd love to get as much feedback as I can. Every little bit would help right now. @_@

Thank you for any input you can give me, guys!

MST3K type streams sound really fun!

    • Link

It has been so far every time we've done it!

  • Link

Since I never really tune into streams I'm not sure how great my input is, but, if I was GOING to watch a stream I'd be most likely to tune into an MST3k-like one : 3
(I have no idea how it works/if it's actually profitable or not but I know you can make & sell riffs through rifftrax.com; could be an idea if you are doing it anyway/you find that you really like doing it and people are interested. But again I have no knowledge on the actual logistics of that or if people tend to buy them or not, just a thought.)

I keep forgetting that you can record and submit your own Rifftrax! I should look into that.

The MST idea so far seems to be the most popular...hmm...

Have you guys tried streaming while playing a really scary game? :D

    • Link

That's what I've been thinking of doing! Especially since my reactions to scary games tend to be...atypical, to say the least.

I notice that if you use furstream, you can potentially make pay-per-view streams...

    • Link

I've never even heard of Furstream before. Tell me more?

      • Link

It's a general furry stream site. In looks, it's trying to ape twitch. It used to have IRC chat but they removed it for something proprietary (a shame, since I wanted to use an IRC program to add live chat logs to the video)

        • Link

Does it have any particular advantages over Twitch other than being specifically furry oriented?

(Bear in mind I'm not OVERLY familiar with Twitch either.)

          • Link

You're allowed to do art on it, you can set an adult stream rating, and you don't need to be a paying customer to do full HD streams.

            • Link

Hmm...I'll look into it! Thanks for the tip.

  • Link

:< haven't managed to catch any of the streams
would like to watch one when it is live

    • Link

Hopefully soon then! Time zones can be troublesome, can't they?

      • Link

annoying little critters arent they ... timezones ... pfff -.-

I'm lonely and want company, but I also don't have a good internet deal and will be trying to get broadband in two weeks (hopefully less) I'd probably watch anything, but just now as I sip morning coffee. I wouldn't mind listening to music reviews like an internet radio giz, like 'Hipster, please' reviews Nerdcore music.

On the other hand you could throw the fandom a bone and review stories on Weasyl.

      • Link

Or fuzzy thingies in general. Or I could ramble and rant about any of my interests, about some of which I have RATHER STRONG opinions.

Man if my paypal worked I'd just send you some cash period :I

    • Link

I appreciate the thought, at least. What's up with your PayPal?

      • Link

No idea, it wont hook up to my bank account, been struggling with this with them for a year now

        • Link

That's kind of ridiculously. :/ Honestly I prefer NOT to link PayPal to my bank, though. Ever heard of Moneypak?

          • Link

I have not! is it useful?

            • Link

It's an easier way to transfer funds if it won't work with your bank account!

              • Link

But, do most artists take it? I sincerely miss commissions

                • Link

Oh no, see, you use it to reload PayPal! You buy a MoneyPak card with cash or debit, then you use the code on the card to transfer the funds from it to PayPal. Bada bing! :D

Answering this one late, I would not solicit tips anywhere it can be viewed. Remember, the MPAA is extremely jealous of their revenue streams, and will not tolerate it. I highly doubt anyone would report you for it, but that's not as issue; they have web scrapers and bots that look for such things. Tread very carefully on this one, and again, nowhere anyone can read it.

That has been my concern from the beginning. So far I have been focused almost solely on films in the public domain, but I have realized I can't sustain this venture on those alone forever, so I'm going to have to think very, very carefully about my next move.
