Artists You Should Be Watching (With Writeups and Examples) by azurehusky

Hey! So in order to help spread the Weasyl love around and also hopefully make people aware of Weasyl artists they didn't know about!

Unlike some other people, I'm going to try to restrict this to about 5 artists per journal, because I know when I see one of those journals with 20+ artists I get kinda overwhelmed. (No shade at people who do that sort of journal! You're awesome! Just not my taste.) To make up for this, though, I'll try and include a brief summary of their art style and a couple of their pieces I particularly recommend.

(Pieces with an asterisk next to their name are what I'd consider NSFW.)

tamyra tamyra: Tam is one of my favourite artist discoveries in the past year. She has a fantastic art style (both for drawing furries and humans, which is rare), good sense of comedic timing, and a real sense of passion and romance to her intimate pieces. Additionally, she is just incredibly friendly and has some of the most hilarious and engaging streams I've ever participated in. I'm having a hard time picking pieces of hers to highlight since I love all her stuff so much.

-Pike's Place: Look at that background. JUST LOOK AT IT.
-Frustrated*: Shows her awesome comic-skills and humour, but also at how her relationships are realistic, flawed, and awkward. (Nicole & Tristan are her go-to characters and their dynamic is just so interesting.)
-Mood Lighting*: Once you get past the fantastic shading on it, look at how interesting and happy and intimate the people involved are. With Tam's work, I never get the feeling like sex is Tab A/Slot B; everyone has a personality and an emotional weight to them.

Ritts Ritts: When I first started watching Ritts, honestly, it was mostly because of the fact that I really enjoyed the way he drew chubby/fat characters. I still do, don't get me wrong, but I've come to appreciate a lot more about him. In particular, I think he cares about character diversity and about his character's stories more than a lot of artists I've seen. Whether he shares it or not, every character he draws has a story to them, has their own background and personality. This gives all his works, especially his comics, a particular spark of life because the characterization is so strong. And he has just a ridiculous number of characters--hopefully he'll post one of his lineups of them on his Weasyl someday (I tried finding them on his Tumblr but ended up giving up)--all of whom are unique and interesting. He has a huge focus on body diversity, different sorts of couples and personalities, and a nice mix of cartoony-and-serious style. Plus on the occasions when he shares an animation, they're awesome.
-Flex Giggle Flick: See what I mean about his animations?! Just incredibly smooth and lifelike.
-Ship Tease, p. 2: Showing off his comic-making skill, and also one of my favourite couples of his (especially Alan my fictional-character lust-crush). He has a lot of really solid comics (mostly porn, so warning to those who are :| about that and yay for those of us who are :D about it) that cover a wide range of people and body types.
-Sketchdump 25*: Usually I'm trying to link people to finished pieces here, but I thought this sketchdump of his really showed off his variety and diversity. So many body types, poses, moods, everything in here.

Ritts has a lot of awesome stuff and so far only a small portion of it is on his Weasyl. Hopefully if more people started following him and commenting he might be tempted to move more old stuff over. Whistles innocently

chrisgoodwin chrisgoodwin: I find it hard to summarize Chris's stuff because there's such an amazing variety. He does sweet comics about overheard conversations, designs fonts, remixes music. Some of stuff is stunningly realistic, others incredibly stylized. Some pieces are one-shots, others have novellas of world-building behind them. Obviously I think everyone I link to is a talented artist, but Chris just strikes me as one of those artists that is full of incredible skill and creative eye for the world to the extent that it's boggling. Plus he's friendly and interactive with people and will occasionally just have nice journals that point to music or art that he thinks is neat, so you get exposed to all sorts of cool stuff.
-Overheard: Pumpkin Pie and Overheard: I'm so Tired: One of my favourite side-projects of Chris's is how he captures snippets of overheard conversation in comic format. Ranging from sweet to cute to heart-breaking, they're like a drawn version of the Humans of New York project; small, humanizing glimpses into the lives of strangers.

-Stay: This is what I'm talking about with regards to his variety of creativity. This piece is just an exploration of the different moods of a single word through font and illumination.
-Counselor 5: Part of a group of robot-futurism art he was doing, I found this one particularly striking. You can tell there's a weight of story behind this piece even if he's never used the character again.

Whoof, okay, I'll leave this at these three and try to make this a weekly deal so as to not flood people with info in a single journal. I hope that these will help y'all find more awesome artists here on Weasyl!

*Note: I was planning on doing these sorts of journals anyway, but I'm particularly trying to make them into a THING called Project Boost as part of the Project Community effort. I'm hoping that by encouraging each other to follow neat new artists here on Weasyl, we can increase and sustain our level of community here. Please, by all means, feel free to be inspired to make your own artist suggestions to your own followers!
