Want to see more of my personal art? consider becoming a Patron! by Thornwolf

http://www.patreon.com/Thornwolf

I've set up a Patreon page to help me be able to afford to create personal artwork. Many of your favorite pieces of artwork that I've created were the direct result of my own inspiration and time, not commissions, but because, like everyone, I need to pay the bills, my personal art time more often than not gets shoved under the rug and I'm not creating as much inspiring personal art as I once did.

That's where you come in! I have set up tiered rewards categories for my patrons, even just $1 gets you exclusive sneak peeks to Patreon-only content, WIPs, sketches, and news for projects that the general public doesn't see. The more you pledge, the more swag you'll get, including signed prints of each piece of new, finished personal artwork I create, a copy of the Thorn Doodles sketchbooks upon their release, which I previously had to set aside due to lack of time/money to produce them, and free stickers and magnets mailed to you as soon as they're created.

By giving me the financial justification to pursue my own projects, you are directly contributing to my creativity, my spark, the drive that keeps me going as an artist.

Please have a look, and thank you so much for your dedication!

Don't take this the wrong way but that seems a bit ridiculous, you want people to sponsor you for drawing personal art, that be like me getting sponsored so I can cook myself dishes in my free time. I understand times are tough and bills have to be payed but anything you do in your own free time shouldn't be donated by your fans.
Then again, with all the perks that come with it, it's not like your sponsoring fans wouldn't get anything in return so I don't think less of you for it =)

This is just my opinion though, I hope I didn't offend you ^^'

Do you have fans of your cooking dishes? Complete strangers who enjoy your work? Would you ever consider asking them to help pay for ingredients if you were making a huge meal for a lot of them? Maybe you wouldn't ask them to chip in, but they also shouldn't be expecting to eat for free, either.

Well, you hope you didn't offend me, but you really did, because you're essentially telling me that my only value is an artist is what custom material people can buy from me and my own ideas are worth nothing. And "not thinking less of me for it"...I don't need your permission or your validation, so, that's actually a double insult.

Let me explain it in a way I hope you will understand. You comment on almost every piece of artwork I produce, but have never commissioned me. I don't have to post the artwork I create to public galleries, but I do anyway so people like you can enjoy it, merely as a courtesy and well, I like comments. Most of them anyways. But commissions are not the reason I got into art, not in the slightest. I started taking commissions so I could support my hobby, but unfortunately for every piece of commissioned work I take, that's energy that's taken away from me creating what I truly love, the art I would create for art's sake. I love drawing people's OC's, but it's not my passion, not by far. That is not the reason I put pen to paper, but it is the means by which I make my living, and unfortunately energy is a limited resource so I'd rather focus my efforts on things I get paid for. This is my job. This is not my "free time". This is merely me shifting gears by either getting paid for what I want (that people enjoy and want to see) or getting paid for what someone else wants (at a much higher price, since..custom work and all.)

Art patronage is not a new concept at all. In fact, many of your favorite Renaissance, Dutch Baroque, and French Impressionists received patronage to paint what they wanted AS WELL AS private commissions because true supporters and appreciators of the arts understand that creative types very often work best when exploring their own visions when they're not pigeonholed by specific subject matter. A patronage is provided by someone who appreciates art for art's sake, and wants to see the true potential of an artist, not just how well they can translate their idea onto paper. No one is forcing you, pulling your wallet out of your pocket and giving it to a cause you seem worthless. My commissions are still available for purchase, after all (and are available at steep discount for those who opt to be a patron as my sincerest thanks!).

So, to be blunt, you haven't ever paid for the privilege to tell me what I should and shouldn't do with my time, so your comment is not only insulting it is extremely ill-informed and holds no weight other than to make yourself look bad.

I was going to reply with many more words then this but frankly I can't be bothered since you clearly made your response very clear to me.
Good luck with it and everything else.

Here's to hoping no massive currency wonk happens as the conversion is actually not horrid this way at the moment :) Be interesting how it goes given most of the peeps using the thing are comics!

        • Link

Yeah I'm very curious as well, especially since with my type of work its so variable, but thank goodness for that capper so if I have a particularly productive month, people don't have to worry. A friend of mine (Astolpho/The Dawn Chapel) is doing his comic on a per-page basis instead of per-month like other comics, so I followed his model pretty closely. http://www.patreon.com/dawnchapel I think this might work well for me! Instead of going "someday" for my ideas, I can be like "No. TODAY." And feel good about myself :)

Hmm, I'm very VERY tempted, with big sum... but only on two conditions, both of which involve me buying some stuff from you. Note me if your interested. I assure you won't be disappointed!

    • Link

Noted! Weasyl's noting system is a little buggy though, so if it didn't go through, lemme know :3

      • Link

Oh, I got it, and I've replied.

Good luck with this dear I hope it will work out for you!
I might jump in as well a bit later if it's still up. In the next days I would send few questions according to this =3

    • Link

Thank you hon! And yes, please, by all means ask away! Email is probably better though, I don't much like the note system on this site. I'm at thornwolf.art@gmail.com - feel free to shoot me a line! <3

This is SUCH an awesome idea. It makes me really happy to think you'll get to illustrate more of your own ideas! I think that's every artist's dream, really. You have some wonderful patrons, looks like you already have a lot of support. ^_^

    • Link

Thank you ;__; I'm so grateful for everyone who's sponsored me so far, I'm overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, moved to the point of tears really! It's the happiest feeling in the world to know that people actively want to help me bring my head-babies to reality.

Oh my goodness, this is brilliant! I'm exploring the website right now, I just LOVE how you've set everything up. I can't wait to see more art from you, spurred on from online patronage. This makes me so happy! <3

  • Link

I really hope this idea works out well for you! <3

  • Link

Wow such a cool idea! I'll def help out for sure once my taxes are paid :3

    • Link

Thank you in advance! :) So far I'm really enjoying it, I feel much more energized, and that energy is then passed on to my commissions, plus theres more personal content being shared with my sponsors. It's really been beneficial all around!

  • Link

I'll consider this. I've seen similar posts from others so yours is merely the latest in a trickle, but I'm still in the process of figuring out how it works and, if I decide I like the platform, whom to support and all that.

    • Link

Sure! A lot of my artist friends have recently picked it up around the same time I did, so it's kind of a flood right now, but if you have any questions I'd be happy to see if I could help out in any way :)

This is the coolest thing! I hope you get lots of support :)
