Pricing advice for t-shirt design (please read) by houndbound

Hey all, I had a question for those of you who have done art outside of little commissions for the furry community. A friend of mine contacted me about doing a t-shirt design for a few of his buddies who are in a local band (We aren't talking The Black Keys here or anything). It's something fun and cartoony and I have no idea how to even start thinking about a base price. Does anyone have any pointers, or figures to throw at me? Like I said, I'm not really worried about these guys making bank of my design or whatever, I just have no idea how to price things for "real world" consumption!

Well I'm not really too good with this sort of thing either- I guess you should write up some sort of contract, like maybe whatever price you think is fair for whatever number of shirts it will be. If they want the rights to the design itself, it should be more expensive.

Maybe it could be something like, hey you pay me for the design for you guys, and if in the future you sell shirts with my design on it I get 10% of the profit or something.

Hey, actually a really good place to ask this question would be the Artist's Beware Livejournal! They answer stuff like this all the time!

When I designed teeshirts for the doggie daycare/boarding place I work at, I definitely up-charged because I knew she'd be making a profit off of the design for.. the rest of forever. Instead of dealing with the 10% every-sale hassle, I just charged more than I normally would so my boss had rights to the design and could do what she wanted with it. :x
