Musings and Opinions by Thestory

Overall I am enjoying the layout of Weasyl and the functionality. There are only a few things bugging me about the site itself and most of these issues are bound to be fixed during the run of the beta.

One issue in particular is more tricky.

Properly tagging adult work seems to be a hassle for some people and they just don't bother. Which makes it hard for those who enjoy artistic nudes but aren't really looking for porn. This is one of the reasons I personally think artistic nudes should be labeled 13+ and pornographic imagery should be reserve for for 18+. It's painful for me to have to lump my academic life drawings in with what is basically smut. Not that erotic imagery is something I am against. I openly draw it for others and sexuality is completely natural.

However I understand it can offend people and some of the extreme fetishes in the community go overboard, but being overly protective about plain nudity is a bit extreme. Not only is the fear of nudity a cultural issue but hiding it only further degenerates it into a taboo. It turns something completely natural into something bizarre, saying it is strictly sexual and naughty. Which it is not. We only come into the world naked after all. I think the human body is a beautiful and unique thing and we really shouldn't be reserving it for only sexual purposes.

That is my two cents on the matter and it leads me into my next bit.

I am going to be uploading the pornography I've been commissioned to do. I will have it all placed in a separate folder and everything will be properly tagged. So make sure your settings are prepared how you would like. I don't want to offend anyone.

So that is about all for now. Thoughts, opinions?

    I couldn't agree with this more. :P

Last week, I was in the awkward position of not uploading a (completely non-sexual) cover image, simply because I found labeling bare female breasts 18+ really really uncomfortable. The character's lower half was covered, and she wasn't even focused on her chest. I've honestly seen more explicit pics in National Geographic.

According to the forum, they're reworking the ratings, so I hope the changes tone that stuff down a bit.

Glad to hear they are reworking it. I find the distinction between nudes and erotica pretty clear on most occasions. I don't see why we should hide nudity away when its out and about for childrens eyes in galleries around the world.

i enjoy artistic nudity but i think they have it that way BECAUSE of the people that dont bother labeling and for those that always take it to far. to some people a erection and spread lips are mature and not adult which i entirely disagree with... its just safer this way but i can respect the dislike of bunching your gallery together i hate doing that as well at least there are folders right?

Well if someone ended up putting a figure with an erection in the mature instead of adult category it would be breaking the upload policy no matter what. That should already be protected by Weasyls rules. Pretty much aroused genitalia would be a no go. That's a pretty well defined line.

    [rant]

I think as a culture, we need to stop sexualizing nudity.

Just the other day someone was saying that the naked man butts on Brave was a little too much for kids. Well imo, no no it's not. Because butts on their own are not sexual. My argument there was I'd seen more butts on Nickelodeon.

And my argument here is that I've seen Leonardo's The Creation of Adam, and Botticelli's The Birth of Venus since early, early childhood. There's nothing dirty or smutty about those pieces of art.

I don't even look at Courbet's Origin of the World, a flat out painting of a vagina and think "this is Sexually oriented"

It's just a vagina, and on it's own there is nothing sexual about it. Even if it was, at it's creation, very shocking to the 19th century art critic. But that's an art history for another day.... getting into what defines something as porn...

And There's nothing wrong with dirty dirty smut. But are we are now classing, a figure with a 5 foot shlong drizzled in a thick coat of semen with a vibrator firmly planted into their butt and was clearly meant to be wank material; with life drawing. With Rembrandt, and Manet.

Grant it, I think there's some art that isn't suitable for a minor to view. I don't think children should be running off and looking at Schiele or Mark Ryder... Heck Saturn Devouring his Son terrified me as a child.

But being that there's porn on this site, and hardly anyone tags their smut as porn or even as nsfw, if you want to view art which may contain nudity you also have to look at porno. And then spend an hour tagging the ever-loving crap out of it and adding really specific or really vague tags to your tag block in vain hope that you won't have to see someone molesting an underage cartoon character. ( I don't even hate erotica I swear lol)

So for me, at least, to be happy, we'd need to have super hard core tagging rules, where if you tag your porn as being porn then it gets taken down. or material with the purpose of being sexually arousing or shocking/disturbing and couldn't be displayed somewhere vaguely public... like in a building... gets the 18+ rating.

If you gotta hide it from your mom, it's probably too risque.

I AM SORRY I HAVEN't SHUT UP ABOUT THIS FOR DAYS STORY.

    Disclaimer:

I don't hate poooorn, I just don't want to look at a lot of it, I saw erect dicks being cut off this morning. That isn't how I like to have my morning tea.

I'm going to go post tits in protest xc

It's okay babes I understand. It will be okay I promise. Heh.

      • Link

        *sniff*

.....We could have like a non-ranty discussion...

Where we discuss what makes something filthy. Origin of the World was made as a response to the smooth idealized figures that were considered often times-pornographic but in their mythological context and over idealized-ness were considered acceptable by society.

The realism in Origin of the World was considered shocking because of it's realism. Was it now porn because he made a representation of an actual woman, and an actual women's fluffy vagina that looked like a vulva and not a nondescript hairless mound.

I think I know who you're talking about with regards to that Brave statement! I'm pretty sure it was on Facebook hahah

But yeah, I totally thought the same thing you thought when I saw that comment

I disgreeeed with heeeeem, he never responded to meeee though. It's cause my argument was just to amazing XD

And I had to make an argument because the one's people were making were so circular and self-congratulatory.

    WELL I HATE PORN

    BUT ALSO I AGREE

  • Link

We hear you. We're actually currently tuning our ratings guidelines to be more in line with community feedback, and in the (hopefully near) future we're going to be doing a revamp on our ratings system. As always, thanks for the opinions!

    • Link

Aden you stole my response. You crafty fennec, you!

    • Link

Yeah nothing reflecting bad on anybody just my thoughts on the ratings. Thanks for listening.

    • Link

Listening to our feed back :'c

I just shed tears of joy

That means a lot as a new user :D

  • Link

Like Aden said, we do our best to listen to feedback from our userbase and try to figure out how we can work, tweak and apply things. Glad you're liking Weasyl so far, and hopefully we can progress and improve and make the site even better than it is!

    • Link

It's cool you guys are listening. Didn't really expect a response from mods since it was idle musing but that just makes me more appreciative.

  • Link

    I totally agree

  • Link

I absolutely agree with you. I think the rules regarding the rating system for nudity are downright confusing and don't really make a whole lot of sense. I have multiple character sheets that have been marked as explicit because you can see nipples- just nipples and nothing else. Now, I don't mind conforming to site rules and all but I do find it a little headscratch-worthy because the rules on this are actually rather vague.

    On the Community Guidelines page:

    "Mature (13+)

The content depicted is suitable for users age thirteen and over only; content of this rating includes violence or mild gore, the use of or reference to drugs, sexually suggestive themes including partial nudity (such as provocative dress), blood, and harsh profanity."

Like, what does that really apply to? Underwear and lingerie, bikinis, panty shots... and that's it? Partial nudity in my mind is easily applicable to topless women, apparently not? IDK just think the rules need some better defining. Anyway I'm with you Story, sorry for the ramble.

    • Link

Yeah it makes the middle ground really unclear. I totally understand your rant.

    • Link

We've heard a bunch about the concerns for our guidelines and we're working on revising and improving them to be much more clear and such. I'm not sure when we'll have it ready though! Hopefully once we have our revisions and such finished and published things'll be a lot more clear and understandable and such!

      • Link

:> That's great to hear! I like this site quite a lot and I think it's off to a great start, and I'm glad you're all so serious about refining and perfecting everything.

  • Link

    Agreed!

The site is still in beta though, but I'm glad the staff is actively working on clearing up the situation!

    • Link

      Yup! It's good to hear.

  • Link

I think in any site, for weird shit, there should be a whole 4th category for it XD

    • Link

      I agree with this!
